I would genuinely like to know how closing Off-Topic will create a "stronger community." I'm not asking just to be snarky, but I don't see the logic here. The only plausible arguments I can think of (and this is not to say that I agree with these, just that they're plausible) are:
(1) Perhaps the moderators are simply overwhelmed and *something* had to be closed, in which case they would understandably triage the Off-Topic forum rather than the forums for their own games and hopefully be more effective at moderating the on-topic areas.
(2) Having an Off-Topic forum is somehow drawing in or retaining people who are mostly just trolling, starting flame wars, and otherwise being purposely disruptive and annoying.
I could accept (1) reluctantly, but I would point out one downside, which is that some people might end up moving on to other forums during interludes between major Bioware releases and not coming back. I started out coming to BSN because I wanted to talk about Mass Effect and got into Dragon Age much later, but over time I've gotten into the habit of coming here just to talk about video games in general, and the OT section was the main reason for that, because I know that there are active threads there on other series that I like such as Fallout or The Witcher, and that I could probably start my own thread even on a relatively obscure game and still get a few interesting responses. I'm not a regular on any other video game forums, but I may start looking for some others now.
And if (2) is part of the thinking, I have to say that I honestly haven't seen this. Not that we never have threads that turn nasty or controversial, but I'm not sure that the presence of the Off-Topic forum is that big of an enticement for trolling, or that its absence would deter trolling. I mean, are there posters who participate constructively in OT but then go and post "Mass Effect sucks" 10 times a day in the Mass Effect forums, or whose activity on BSN consists almost entirely of starting arguments and insulting people in OT? Maybe there are and it's just escaped my attention, but it would be kind of surprising.
