I am fine with criticism, and the type of criticism you posted is one that I welcome. The criticism I do not welcome is things like "You guys are a bunch of liars who don't care about games and only money".
Now even when there is legitimate crticism, I personally do not necessarily have the power to shape things like people expect me to. Also given it is generally my free time that I spend on here, I am not really able to persue things with people during work hours. Because that would be taking away time, from my job description. Which makes all sorts of fun, so while I may be helping people out, I am sacrificing my own performance and career doing so.
I usually tried to avoid any "You guys are.:." criticism when attempting to communicate with Bioware, because I am aware of how many people work there and in how many different places they are professionally. Criticism led by generalisations and attacks rarely tends to do any good, and I don't think the folks at your company are "a bunch of liars who don't care about games and only money". Especially the dev teams I think are hard working people who love games just as much as I do, if not likely even more.
But... it can be really hard to understand some of the things that happen(ed), and the whole process of communication can be really difficult and sometimes plain frustrating. It certainly was so back during the ME3 days when I was more active, and although there undoubtedly were a lot of problems with the attitude of parts of the community I still feel quite a few things could have easily gone better with some improvements in the way communication between fans and company was handled.
My personal lesson from the whole thing was not to get (too) emotionally involved. Looking back I stand by every bit of criticism I brought up, but if I were to do it again today I probably simply wouldn't get drawn into the discussions as deeply as I did. But I genuinely did believe that talking about the issues people had with the game was neccessary and might lead somewhere. One of the weirdest things was realizing that the one of the only Bioware employees who gave me the feeling he really tried to understand what bothered people was neither an ME dev nor a designated community handler. It was a "random" QA guy from the DA team talking on the forums in his spare time.
Now Off-Topic is gone, a whole big, lively, friendly section of the forums. It was shut down basically without warning, and without much of a reason besides some unconvincing PR talk about strenghtening the community. People have strong feelings about it and feel the need to talk about it. And the only Bioware employee willing and/or available to engage the confused and disgruntled forumites is a nice dude who works on QA for the DA franchise, doing it in his spare time.
I appreciate you taking the time to post here! It's cool that someone is talking to us. It's comforting. It's not all that much helpful for the issue at hand, though, as you have no real answers, but then again it's not at all your job to have them. It seems like the community manager isn't around to deal with the aftermath of such drastic changes to the forums. The community manager even the folks who basically live in this forum didn't know was in charge to begin with.
All in all I can only note that all the communication mishaps of the past contributed to the decline of my general appreciation for Bioware probably more than any problem I had with any of the games. Unceremoniously closing Off-Topic without anything but a bad joke of a warning and then meeting the reactions with an official silence seems as much like a logical next step as it feels like a shocking surprise move.
Ah, damn, I started ranting again. I didn't want to do that, and I guess I should take that as a sign that I should just let it go. If this gets sorted out and/or there's a BW game I feel the urge to talk about I'll probably be back, but for now this is it. So yeah, I wish all the folks who hold the line here the patience to keep on fighting the good fight! And all the best to you, Mr. Johnson, and Bioware as a whole! We had good times, but...
