It didn't blind you upon the switch? It actually hurt my eyes. I wasn't alone either, that was the main complaint. We went from dark to too bright too quickly and our eyes couldn't adjust. We wanted a theme like the old one and they met us halfway with the dark theme we have now which I use exclusively.

Oh, and good to have you here Reezy. Is it asking too much if I ask you to stay?

I'm popping in about every hour or so despite having a new home just to see what's going on. I'm not optimistic about the situation at all but popping in is the least I can do being on here for four years. Not because of BioWare but because of the people that made this place worth sticking around in. Even if they're not here.

Keep getting my handle mentioned by 'fans'. They keep asking me to depart, but then seem intent on having me around again. Obsession perhaps?

I would like to ask more about what is seen as good with this. Perhaps some toxic elements were chased away, but seemingly were only scattered temporarily to reappear again later. Personally believe that it will take an active CM team to actually get that done; not eliminating a forum such as OT, but I could be mistaken...

Always a first time!

I feel you man. So far we've had tons of people pitch in to voice their concerns, tons leave, big posts on suggestions, big posts on opinions, agreements, disagreements, understandings, misunderstandings, you name it this thread's got it.

Kinda like Off Topic actually. Only this thread's all about Off Topic. Appropriately enough. hah

This is apparently the last place on BSN where off-topic discussion is allowed! B)

That is so bizarre. We can't go off topic, but we need to talk about the off topic section.

Brain, make sense.

Without the Off-topic, where exactly would be the best place for discussion on Pax, E3, Goty, etc. anyway? Those are only semi Bioware/ EA related, come every year, & can lead to a lot of wide discussions depending on line up. Plus one of those is going on right now.

How's EA supposed to sniff out our system, genre, & style interests if we're not obsessively talking about it so much? There is some use to be made out of the daily noise after all. If they wonder why another game or team is doing so well, they have us right there to look at. Like have Life is Strange for example. If they wanted insight into that games fanfare & what people saw in it, they'd have our whole thread going on their own board. Easy access.

And what about former Bioware devs? Like when The Long Dark devs reached out to us here for their Kickstarter. The Off-Topic was kind of the perfect place for that. Or that thread lamenting Hepler's absence a few months back... Or any other dev who left over the years for one reason or another. Discussing the Doctor's new projects, their trips, & nostalgic things. Off-Topic was the only real place we had for that kind of thing.

And thanks for chatting with us Bryan Johnson, whether here or anywhere else, thank you for taking the time.

Exactly. I think the benefits of the Off Topic section's existence and activity outweigh whatever positive is supposed to come from locking it.

Our community manager is at PAX, which runs till the 31st. So we can safely expect no official response till after that date.

September 2nd:

"Hey, everyone!

After a lot of internal deliberation and discussion, we've decided to keep the Off-Topic section closed. We understand this may upset some members of the community, and for that, we apologise. However, we felt that it was in the best interests of the community as a whole to keep discussion focused on BioWare products. It is our hope that the community respect our wishes and thinks carefully before posting Off-Topic discussion in other areas.

That being said, we don't wish to restrict your conversations. For example, threads comparing BioWare games to their contemporaries are fine, provided they are posted in the right place and follow all other rules of the forums.

It is our earnest desire to improve the community and provide a better experience for all BioWare fans! We will continue to work hard on bringing new changes to the forum structure, as well as groups. We hope to keep the community updated when changes and improvements are made.

As for this thread, we sincerely thank everyone for their feedback and hope that we can continue to engage in strident discussion about the state of the community and BioWare games in future. We will certainly take everything you've said on board. However, seeing as this thread has been left open for a while, I'm going to lock it as there is nothing more that needs to be said. If you want, you can always contact us on twitter and reddit for further clarification or discussion.

Thanks,

The BioWare Team"

Anyone remember the DA:I Follower Fridays? Where on one friday of each month a new follower would be revealed. We got one Follower Friday but then some of us waited and waited and waited for another Follower Friday but that day never came. There was no announcement as to why there wasn't one or when another one would occur. Follower Friday only lasted one friday! One! But the person who was in charge of it never communicated as to what had happened even though people were waiting for an explanation.

Well, my point is, even though it's not the same thing, I don't think anyone is going to come back here and explain what happened or what will happen. The Lobby is gone...gone... for good.

I'll eat a slug if it does come back.

You know that deactivating the Lobby is like killing the heart of the boards right? There's only so much that people can discuss about BioWare games. I assume this is a way to control people from even mentioning your competitors, but it's also censoring your members from expressing themselves on what they want. I can see where you're coming from, but I think this is unfair.

I am fine with criticism, and the type of criticism you posted is one that I welcome. The criticism I do not welcome is things like "You guys are a bunch of liars who don't care about games and only money".

Now even when there is legitimate crticism, I personally do not necessarily have the power to shape things like people expect me to. Also given it is generally my free time that I spend on here, I am not really able to persue things with people during work hours. Because that would be taking away time, from my job description. Which makes all sorts of fun, so while I may be helping people out, I am sacrificing my own performance and career doing so.

I usually tried to avoid any "You guys are.:." criticism when attempting to communicate with Bioware, because I am aware of how many people work there and in how many different places they are professionally. Criticism led by generalisations and attacks rarely tends to do any good, and I don't think the folks at your company are "a bunch of liars who don't care about games and only money". Especially the dev teams I think are hard working people who love games just as much as I do, if not likely even more.

But... it can be really hard to understand some of the things that happen(ed), and the whole process of communication can be really difficult and sometimes plain frustrating. It certainly was so back during the ME3 days when I was more active, and although there undoubtedly were a lot of problems with the attitude of parts of the community I still feel quite a few things could have easily gone better with some improvements in the way communication between fans and company was handled.

My personal lesson from the whole thing was not to get (too) emotionally involved. Looking back I stand by every bit of criticism I brought up, but if I were to do it again today I probably simply wouldn't get drawn into the discussions as deeply as I did. But I genuinely did believe that talking about the issues people had with the game was neccessary and might lead somewhere. One of the weirdest things was realizing that the one of the only Bioware employees who gave me the feeling he really tried to understand what bothered people was neither an ME dev nor a designated community handler. It was a "random" QA guy from the DA team talking on the forums in his spare time.

Now Off-Topic is gone, a whole big, lively, friendly section of the forums. It was shut down basically without warning, and without much of a reason besides some unconvincing PR talk about strenghtening the community. People have strong feelings about it and feel the need to talk about it. And the only Bioware employee willing and/or available to engage the confused and disgruntled forumites is a nice dude who works on QA for the DA franchise, doing it in his spare time.

I appreciate you taking the time to post here! It's cool that someone is talking to us. It's comforting. It's not all that much helpful for the issue at hand, though, as you have no real answers, but then again it's not at all your job to have them. It seems like the community manager isn't around to deal with the aftermath of such drastic changes to the forums. The community manager even the folks who basically live in this forum didn't know was in charge to begin with.

All in all I can only note that all the communication mishaps of the past contributed to the decline of my general appreciation for Bioware probably more than any problem I had with any of the games. Unceremoniously closing Off-Topic without anything but a bad joke of a warning and then meeting the reactions with an official silence seems as much like a logical next step as it feels like a shocking surprise move.

Ah, damn, I started ranting again. I didn't want to do that, and I guess I should take that as a sign that I should just let it go. If this gets sorted out and/or there's a BW game I feel the urge to talk about I'll probably be back, but for now this is it. So yeah, I wish all the folks who hold the line here the patience to keep on fighting the good fight! And all the best to you, Mr. Johnson, and Bioware as a whole! We had good times, but...

Every year for the last three years we've had really big and successful E3 threads, but I've noticed that a good number of Bioware fans would rather participate in "Bioware at E3" threads than a generic E3 thread.

Like, there'd always be a different version of the E3 threads in the ME and DA sections. And it was generally filled with the same things that the normal E3 threads were filled with, people talking about all these things not Bioware(which is off topic so I don't see why they didn't partake in the normal one), until eventually the Bioware subject came up through whatever Bioware had shown(trailer, game reveal, etc etc) and once that was depicted, the conversation would stick to that and only that.

I always thought that strange. I didn't know why the community couldn't all be in one place for E3, discuss everything E3 related, and then when Bioware's time came and Bioware games were shown, create discussions based around those alone.

Like others sharing their opinion on the change, so was I. I'm not new here. I've spent plenty of time reading these threads over the years. There is so much noise, all sorts of malicious nonsense, intentional and unintentional. It's still happening but it's standing out more in isolation of support. This effect is similar to how things were immediately after the first big changes Jessica enacted.
These changes are still fresh and the environment is still muddied but with a lot of the contributions from OT dwellers gone, it's not changed the forum, overall, that negatively.
I'm not saying only that the forum is better without them but they're better off without the forum. They can say and do what they want in their own community.

Right? And the potential for good contributions to Bioware from the off topic section is out.
