Some people on the German OT section speculated that the people who made the decision were (according to google translate) high school dropouts

Ouch. So if I get this right, those on German OT think English OT should return?

and...what?

Was there a relevant point made after this sophomore observation or did the thought process get dropped with the mic?

You know what? I think the mods will just shut down this thread and won't bother answering anything. Yes, I'm just assuming stuff and yes, I'm losing faith in this community. Why? Because it's FUBAR. I still liked the Lobby even though I didn't post that much.  -_-

I had a bunch of ideas written out earlier in word, but I'm at home now and on my phone and not at work, so I'll just give you the gist.

My thought is this:

One community manager: Conal
Each "social media" location has someone who specifically runs it. One person for Facebook, one for Twitter, one for forums, whatever. Those people all report to Conal.

On the forums themselves, each franchise would have its own head moderator, so one for Dragon Age, one for ME, etc. The forums for the other languages would be done differently of course, depending on their needs and languages.

So lets say Dragon Age has its own head moderator and then 2+ official moderators. Depending on the needs and size of the forums. These are the people that can ban, warn, etc.

Below that would be the volunteer moderators- regular posters who can be trusted to do thread maintenance such as adding spoiler tags, moving threads to appropriate sections, merging two similar topics, give gentle behavior reminders, etc.

Im my perfect world none of the moderators would be anonymous. Points would mean something, and there would be a no tolerance policy on things like harassment, bullying, extreme sexual language, extlude crude language, etc. No threats, and if you're a troll, your IP is banned no questions asked. Done.

I would lighten some rules and make others stricter. There is no need to ban curse words unless they are extreme. Varric says **** a hundred times in a game.

There can be absolutely no wishy washy moderation. You cant ban one person for linking a NSFW image and not someone else. Deleting should be done infrequently and always with a specific explanation. Its used way too often right now.

There should be someone who can officially look into bans and warnings if you would like it contested. For instance, I should be able to contest my current warning point because I felt like Modwhatever had a personal bias against me and it was unjust, and I could fill out a form or something to have someone look into it.

Every moderator should answer to someone else. They should have their own rules, regulations, and expectations. Pay the official moderators or don't, but it would be a requirement that they participate.

The community and social media managers should be required to participate in the community. That is their job.

Are you talking about the slug?

I don't want Off Topic to come back now. Because then I'll have to eat a slug.

Well, they're concerned that it's going to happen to the German OT as well.

Well he's saying that shutting it down doesnt create a better place and is in fact clear to anyone except perhaps those who made the decision who he thinks are high school dropouts

There is a lot of value in some of the posts and topics in OT which may have been a reason it wasn't closed down sooner. It was also a great place to ease into the community. BioWare knows the forums can benefit from an OT section but things have come to a point where closing OT has become the lesser evil, somehow.

Oh ye of too much faith.

As for developer communication with the community, where and when seems, for the most part, to be decided by each individual employee.

A haphazard, scattershot policy which has resulted in developers avoiding the forums like the plague or the few that do try getting burnt out and frustrated by suddenly being thrust into the role of Bioware's spokesperson because the one managing the forums is more absent then they are.

Pertaining to any remaining value on the forums, there must be something to be gleaned, preferentially for BioWare, above all other content that has been abolished. These changes were done with intent, some forethought and ruthlessly.

They certainly were. The forethought has been present - I've talked to numerous devs and mods over the years that expressed their disdain for some of the topics in OT. Ruthlessness is well and accounted for, given the cold nature this entire fiasco has been built around.

And, of course, the intent is crystal clear. Cut off traffic. Ensure the boards are easier to monitor by cutting the legs out of from under them. There's nothing worth talking about on here for Bioware's games and there's no Off Topic to generate more traffic. They can cut down the number of paid mods and the CM can completely forget about here for another year, maybe, when ME:A will be bubbling up so much that more hands on deck will be temporarily needed. Then, come 2017, things will quiet down and they can forget about it until the next game.

That's the intent. It's not make this a pure haven of Bioware-only discussion. It's to turn the place into a ghost town. On purpose. To make it easier to manage. Off Topic gave the forum legs, even when it seemed there was little cross-pollination between those who posted in the different areas. Not everyone who lurks posts and not everyone who goes from one side of the forums to another makes their presence known.

So, yes... Bioware has a plan here. And the plan is to neuter this place so that only a fraction of people remain. I've already received PMs from people you hardly ever see in Off Topic (but post frequently in the Game sections) talking about how they are moving now, since there is little reason to stay. They don't see this as an improvement, they see it as a clear sign that Bioware is investing less time and effort here, not more.

Otherwise it's nothing new, it just sounds so much worse in German. (One of the best languages to berate someone in.) The poster in question posted in this thread, too. In English. ;)

Eignet sich wunderbar zum Befehle schreien und um Lieder zu komponieren, zu denen man in Polen einmarschieren kann! :D

Ahem... still starring at the locked off topic forums. Not much to do here otherwise, besides posting the usual stuff in the 827th mage/templar debate. :(

This could all have been avoided, if you gave Runner your vote for BSN-president.

Its interesting seeing the other language OT forums catching onto this.

Hopefully they're as against this happening there as we are with ours and make themselves heard.

Worst part is there are lots of news to post and I just can't anymore. I find myself creating more and more threads on VSN to keep up.
