I don't do the Multiplayer, so my response is all Singleplayer.

To be honest, I like the Lift Grenade the Sentinel gets, because it has enormous damage output and a good radius.  But I often don't think to use them, mostly I Overload-Warp-Throw, and that triple-threat combo usually does the job.  Another downside is that they don't "home in", so sometimes I'm thinking "Throw" or "Warp" and how they arc around obstacles if you aim correctly, and then I end up blowing up an indestructible bench on the Citadel.

Still, the ability to make what is essentially an instant biotic detonation for free (so to speak) is a nice addition to the Sentinel's arsenal.

I see them as highly situational; they do guaranteed damage and have no cooldown, and when it's a squadmate's grenade you can spam them back-to-back by pausing, targeting enemy, and unpausing repeatedly.  I also like how they can act as "Get out of Banshee's hug-stab NOW!" tactic.  But there is a limited number, so if I'm in a situation where I have to hyper-spam grenades, it's usually because I've done something wrong.

Also, Nova, YOU ARE THE GRENADE.  I find I have a much easier time using that, because when I'm using Nova it's usually because I just punched the enemy with my face using Charge, therefore it's almost impossible to miss.

If there's a grenade I don't care for, it's Cluster Grenades.  I don't hate them, but I don't feel that it adds anything to the Adept.  It's already such a specialized class, and any situation that would benefit from Cluster Grenades is a situation that your other powers would already be able to handle.

If Liara had them, however, I would probably like them a lot more.

Long story short, I prefer grenades for my squadmates, because they never miss, and I don't have to "think" about it so much.

Mass Effect 1: Moddable grenades

Mass Effect 2: Flash Bang and Inferno

or Mass Effect 3: Cluster, Lift, Inferno, Frag, Sticky, Multi-Frag, Heat Seeking, Arc etc...

How could they be done better in future games?

Preferred moddable grenades like in ME1.

Also, liked how they had a timer, or could be detonated sooner by SHepard with a second click.

My issues with Mass Effect 1 grenades were as follows:

Low area of effect

Hardly any damage output

Did not have much of a visual impact

One mission involves using grenades to knock out Thorian possessed colonists.

I had to place the grenade right next to the colonists for the colonists to pass out.

I did not like ME1 grenades, just like I did not like any other aspect of ME1. There is not one thing from ME1 that I miss.

You can detonate ME1 grenades in the air, which is helpful for knocking out the colonists.

I don't think about them. I throw them, if I start thinking about them, they explode in my hand.

I have been a shameless grenade mongrel since before I discovered the BioWare games. It got A HECK ALOT WORSE when I discovered Dragon Age and a downright addiction in Mass Effect.

I enjoy the old fashioned crafting in DA:O (I think they brought it back in DA:I?), but I kind of love either features for the grenades in all ME games. And in Multiplayer, I'm that weirdo who keeps throwing grenades at EVERY ENEMY. Even the Husks. XD

They brought that back (sort of) in the ME Multiplayer. We can detonate recon mines.OeO

My case is very similar to Spockjedi.

I can play Mass Effect 1 without firing a single one. Well, except when I need them to incapacitate the colonists.

In a game that offers you infinite ammo the use of a gadget that has limited numbers sounds unpleasing to me.

In ME2, I never use them as Shepard. Kasumi is somewhat useful but I do not like her as a squad-mate. Since the ME1 versions left a bad taste in my mouth I played ME2 with an anti-grenade mindset. I do not like ME2 combat in general. Specially after the much superior ME3.

As for ME3, I oly use them near the end of a mission, when Im facing bosses. Harvesters, Geth Primes, multiple Banshees and Heavy Mechs are occasions that justify for me the use of grenades. But my personal rule is not to rely on them.

Seriously, in ME3 is so easy to detonate explosions and combos that I see no use for grenades.

Not unless you've got Cluster or frag grenades (Adept and Soldier types) or a grenade launcher (Like the N7 Destroyer does), then yeah. Either a Tech Burst or a Biotic Explosion usually helps.

Just finished up a sentinel run, I found the lift grenades useful for crowd control but overall I don't rely heavily on grenades,

I find them to be ridiculous. Hear me out on this one.

The galaxy is having a total war against a group of highly advanced sentient starships that can indoctrinate its enemies, relentlessly overwhelm a target and we are going to deploy combatants who have to rely on ammunition boxes to fight ?

No wonder we need to rely on superweapons and Starbrat to win the war. We are fielding soldiers who operate on fundamentally flawed combat tactics.

A good combatant tries his very best not to be overdependent on something like ammunition crates. Yet that is what grenades are - They force you to rely on ammunition crates which somehow just exist in places they should not. Doesn't that make them rather predictable to the enemy ? Take the ammo box away and they become useless.

To be fair, I am perfectly okay with something like the N7 Demolisher Engineer who actually has a pylon that can replenish her grenade supply but the rest ? Nope.

This is why I don't spec into the grenades for my Shepards and I don't like playing multiplayer kits that use grenades, the exception being the Demogirl.

I'm sort of split on grenades. I liked the feel and variety of them in ME3 but I kind of prefer them to be a gear selection as opposed to a power selection.

I love lift grenades. Nothing quite like the perfect throw and bodies flying everywhere.
