So no $h!+, there I was... pugging around u/u/g on pc rather smoothly and uneventfully. Should have went to bed, but just received a ppr upgrade, so I decided to go one more game with the collector adept... and that's when it happened.

The lobby was a bit OP, but nothing too ridiculous - myself, ppr destroyer, volus, and reegar turian cabal as host. Despite the first two waves going rather quickly, it wasn't until wave 3 that I noticed something was seriously wrong. Radio silence broken (presumably by host): "Either get your f***ing ass in the objective, [name], or get the f**k out!" The comment was directed at the ppr destroyer, who was about 50 ft outside of the escort circle. The game continued rather uneventfully, and ended with a ridiculously fast completion time (14:xx), with the host in first by a large margin.

Before my lobby screen had even reappeared, the host had readied up again, this time I carefully checked his loadout: adrenaline 3, ap 4, gs 5, shotgun ra 3. Reegar primary, acolyte secondary.

So time for a test, I thought, and readied up my Krogan Soldier w/ harrier + incend 3, gc 5, pa 3, and ar ra 3. My goal was to nade spawns and dust them with incend before the scorewhore could arrive, so that I could test my hypothesis: that he would ditch the objective if the score was close. And sure as $h!+, wave 3 escort? he was nowhere near the damn objective, lol. wave 6 devices? nope - had to try to close the score gap - I ended up doing all the ****ing objectives, lol. So what did it take? 3 killstreaks on wave 11 lol - but he still managed to top score, so I guess he probably feels mighty good about himself, lol.

My question: what the f**k is going on in the head of a serial scorewhore!?

*edit: question 2: what is the best way to troll a serial scorewhore - i.e. how to make them quit their own hosted game?  This would be a lot of fun for me.

Was this score-frosty boots name anything similar to Legal Math Problems?  sounds like his behavior.

As far as my pretty woman score gouging goes...most of the time it's not on purpose...i enjoy turning on Kobe mode every now & then...but most of the time when my score is stupid high, it's because it's what I had to do just to make sure the team gets a shot at extraction.

lol, no his name did not have anything to do with legal math (funny name tho).  And I hear you - although I only have about 400 hrs combined between ps3 and pc, I am well aware that competitive players do like to compete, but this was on a different level altogether (i.e. i've never seen anything like it).  On one hand, you have a guy cursing someone out because he's not "in the objective".  On the other, you have the same guy hypocritically performing the very same action (dismissing the objectives) 15 minutes later in the next game.

Just trying to understand, what is the point?  And hoping to get some responses from players that use similar techniques to achieve their score-pimping dreams.

What's going on in their mind? Well... folks got to make up for being short changed elsewhere. (When done wrong)

When done right. Scoring is a means for improving at your fave game. Which in itself is a never ending goal. Only I don't find this game tight enough in this area for myself getting too competitive.

Objective wise (especially devices), I actually enjoy trying to do all the objectives. Especially if playing for score. Because you still get some points for doing them and because I need a break from the peen focus. Because that focus can get quite heavy sometimes. And I usually just want to be a chill out, something something.

Last night I ran into the worst scorewhore ever. I got dropped into a pre-set White/Geth lobby, with a Talon Merc with a Venom, spamming RMs and missiles like crazy. He didn't do ONE objective, nor he participated in anything. I got rekt many times trying to defuse the ****** devices, while this ******* was on the upper level, nuking every damn thing, just so they could respawn right behind me. His rockets were even flying as the shuttle was landing for extraction. His host was horrible as well, he probably lives on Mars. There was a wave, when I couldn't even tell which room I was in, because I teleported back and forth.

I care. If I don't have the score at the bottom of the board, something is wrong. Badly wrong.

I was like that guy till 2 years ago. Now I just do the objectives myself as quickly as possible so that other scorewhores like me have very little time to scorewhore during the objective waves. If I am behind which is extremely rare I will still try to do the objectives as quickly as possible but tactically nuke some spawns during the objective waves so that the team completes the objective(s) quicker all while decreasing the gap between me and the player in infront at the same time. Exception to this rule is when the host is laggy and I cannot fast carry a pizza, then I will just let the host do the honours while I go berzerk killing enemies until the 2 pizzas have been delivered by someone else, but I do cover them and not run to the other side of the map.

Exactly.  But how do you explain the hypocritical behavior described in the OP, if not for score?  It's not the score that bothers me, but rather the ridiculous antics of a such a player - made me wish PvP was an option, lol.

I absolutely don't know as there aren't many strategies to ruin a score****** day unless you're host. If you don't do objectives, you're as much of a dick as the person who's score*****ing and if you do, the score***** is enjoying his scorehoarding. You can't win!

Thanks for the honest response.  Here's another for you, if you would be so obliged:  Among the competitive scorewhore elite, is playing every game with an adrenaline modded, reegar wielding, warp/dash-through-walls character, considered respectable?  In other words, if such a player/kit/loadout outscored you, would you consider them "good" or "garbage"?

GI is the answer to outdoing the scorewhore

Edit: Mostly because a large part of the playerbase is highly unaware of how powerful the GI is ... many score whores think it will be an easy victory over someone using as bad a kit as the GI.

If you're using the word "psychology" you are doing too much thinking and not enough score-hooring.

I hear you.  Tbh, my Krogan Soldier brought out the best (or worst) in this guy -  but there's still the matter of objective waves, and on-host advantage.  It felt good to watch this guy go through ridiculous antics on the objective waves, but it would have been even better if I would have came out on top.  Then I could text chat: "nice try" or "close, but no scorewhore cigar for you!".  And bask in his mic-raging / rage quitting.  That would have been a blast.

I dont care what the other player picks, I will pick something even more overpowered than what he has or exactly the same thing as him. I like the challenge to outscore people who are trying to top the scoreboard. Whether they will ever admit it or not everyone wants to be the MVP of the game and top the scoreboard, that is what we are all playing this game for, that is why we use good kits/weapons, that is why we use the best gear/equipment, that is why some of us will do some shady stuff to find that little advantage that will help them top the scoreboard or complete a solo in the shortest amount of time. I can respect that in a person if they achieve success within the boundaries of what I find acceptable and what is not.

@BBT - truth be told, if they are a competent player, and they are hosting, they will be tough to outscore.

Players who ignore objectives are disregarding one of the main components to being good at this game, and getting paid. That is a large part of what makes a players ability range from crap to awesome IMO.

if it is really important to you to score well then only host matches.

I'm an above average player, but if I host and use a Slayer with a power amp IV and Acolyte / Talon with Disruptor / Incendiary ammo, there are only a very small handful of players who will outscore me.

The best way to troll a scorewhore is to put an unassuming kit/weapon and show them up. People these days are all about Carriers and Cheesgars and Sexbots and whatnot, most of them have forgotten or don't know how powerful SI and AA are, for example, or the vanilla humans, for that matter. Even more fun is to bring some "ridiculous" at first glance weapon in a Platinum match, like the Mantis, and still top the scoreboard....

Or if I notice that the user is geared or plays particularly cheesy, I'll just bring my GI/Javelin or my Drellgod with his trusty Claymoar...

The other thing I have recently contemplated is that if nobody has bothered to help with objective and the next one happens to be pizza, I'd just grab it and walk around until the time ends.

Interesting concept.  And interestingly, as competitive as I am, I've never viewed it that way.  Idk, to me, the BotB banner bringing the reegar w/ adrenaline to the gold pug is akin to an experienced surfer bringing a longboard my local break.  Yes, you will not have to work as hard, yes, you will catch more waves... but... you are not a beginner kook anymore... you're going to have to bring a shortboard if you want my respect.

Beating their score works every time for me

SI, SE, and AA are all kits I regularly outscore scorewhores with.  Then again, I play those kits like 90% of the time, so I've gotten pretty efficient with them.
