I like the Vanguard, but find Cryo to be a waste for my style of play. I keep hearing how people love it, but I would rather use the extra points in Geth Shield Boost and just max inferno ammo. You get the dance of Fire to slow down enemies, and you get a boosted shield that also give 15%(IIRC) boost to weapon damage. The extra shield gives that extra survival boost, plus quick shield regen if you have to have it, and the extra damage helps to one shot the bad guys. For me this is the best way to play Vanguard, others will not agree, but it works well for me.

I never really tried any of the shield boosts since they're paper-thin on insanity anyways. I might give it a go and see if there's any significant difference.

For me the Vanguard is definitely the most fun class to play with in Mass2.
Much more tactical than its ME1 counterpart, which for me is a plus, and, in all honesty, I can't play a class that isn't Vanguard nowadays. Seriously, all I want is to charge and then I remember I can't...

Love the vanguard. Two chargeing insanity runs behind me and I still can't get enough. Charge!!!

It's called "Vanguarditis". It's a disease and I'm not sure there's a cure...
My Sentinel is basically a Vanguard without Charge. I barely use anything but shotties and only in point blank range. I can't help it....
