Maric's Blade versus Saw Sword?

Is a level 7 sword always better than a level 6 sword?  In this case, Maric's Blade (level 6) has a damage rating of 9.8 versus 10.5 for the Saw Sword.  Both have two rune slots.  However, Maric's Blade comes with bonus damage versus dark spawn (+6 I think) and bonuses to health and stamina regeneration.  Do these additional features make Maric's Blade a better choice?  Or are they already figured into the 9.8 damage score?

In general, Maric's Blade would be a better choice. However, against non-darkspawn, the Saw sword can edge ahead in terms of raw damage because of the +1 damage bonus. This may be worth considering if you don't need the health and stamina regen bonus from the other. Having said this, if the character in question is using a sword and a shield, then it is obviously better to use Cailan's Arms together rather than bringing the Saw sword into the mix.

Also, if you aren't aware already, Maric's Blade can be upgraded to dragonbone by selling it to certain vendors such as Mikhael Dryden, or by stashing it in the storage chest in soldier's peak (I haven't been able to use this reliably though).

The Storage Chest upgrade only works on consoles, not PC. But selling and buying it back does work.

Marics is better than saw, but I prefer Duncans. I am using Duncans and Alistair is using Marics (both Vendor upgraded at the keep).

Good to know!  Does the selling and repurchase upgrade also apply to armor?  Getting Cailan's armor early in the game gives you an edge.  But later in the game, as you run into "massive armor" sets, Cailan's armor does not compare favorably.  Upgrading Cailan's armor would be cool since I would like to have Alistair use it.

Why would you think it does not compare favorably. I was still using it in Awakening.

Obviously because he had a much lower tier version and didn't know it could be upgraded. Upgraded, it may be the best Massive armor in Origins.

Thanks for the info!  Interesting how that works....and doesn't work.  I turned in Maric's blade, Duncan's Weapons, and Cailan's armor to Mikhail Dryden at Soldier's :Peak and all were upgraded to level 7.  I then turned in the level 6 Juggernaut armor to him, but nothing happened.  I assume this means armor or weapons that are in some way "sacred" will be upgraded, but not other items.  Or am I wrong?

Some equipment is locked at certain tiers, that's normal. You won't be upgrading the chanters board quest reward sword from Lothering (Oathkeeper) either, or the balanced greatword Ser Jory had, you won't be finding dwarven longswords that are dragonbone, you won't be upgrading the arcane warrior sword "spellweaver" into dragonbone... You get the picture. Some items are locked at their tier, some have a tier cap lower than 7. Use the wiki to find out what can be upgraded and what can. Sometimes you even get weird stuff, like Asturian's Might from Wardens keep that can only be steel or silverite and nothing in between.

One of the things that was a bit of a disappointment to me was that most of the unique armor or weapons from Origins wasn't upgraded in Awakening. You'd get the generic armor sets to upgrade past it, just not any the unique Origin armors or weapons.

Actually I don't think upgrading is intentional, but more of a bug. The weapons/armor are meant to be scaled to the level you first find them at.  But when you sell them and buy them back, to the game, it is kind of like you are finding them for the first time again. I also think it is mostly the DLC items that are scaled. Since they were designed later to fit it in at any level, so were the rewards.

Many of the items simply aren't scaled to your level when you find them. So selling/buying doesn't alter them.
