Trying to find a reason to use these uncommon weapons

I have a maxed manifest so it's easy to give in to temptation and use only rare/UR weapons. That being said I try to use uncommon weapons sometimes to avoid my enjoyment stagnating and can justify using most of them based on some unique aspect or fit into a specific build. However, there are a handful that I simply can't figure out because it seems like other weapons do exactly the same thing better. One may say this is true of all the lower-tier weapons but in some cases I disagree. Single shot snipers vs mantis can be resolved with the weight issue, locust/GPR vs other accurate rapid fire guns because of the headshot bonus, mattock vs harrier because of ammo consumption rate just to list a few. I also enjoy all the common weapons except the shuriken despite infrequent use.

The ones I can't get a handle on are the eviscerator (vs other light shotguns), tempest (vs hurricane), and especially the phalanx (vs ?). I like the two former but have a hard time justifying taking them over the alternative. But I have no clue how or why to use the phalanx. I truly just don't get this gun. I would like to be comfortable with every weapon for randomizer setups and the like. Efficacy and efficiency aren't everything so a suboptimal but fun playstyle is cool too. Any suggestions?

1 answer to rule them all : GI. Just a few off the top of my head :

Scimitar is a poor mans Pirahna
Phaeston is not a bad gun
Eviscerator is the Wraiths little brother
Katana is crap
Avenger is deadly when fired on full auto
Viper is a poor mans Valiant
Locust is a headshot machine
Tempest is cool

Eviscerator is a Wraith with an extra shot, a little less punch. Figure to need that 3rd shot every so often.

Try the Tempest on a Drell Adept.

Phalanx....eh....

I have actually been impressed with the Viper Huntress, it's not monstrous by any stretch but with her skillset, it's easy to get kills on longer maps b/c of the power damages done.

I also like the Eviscerator GE, again, not monstrous but definitely a class I enjoy playing on occasion, when I'm looking to prevent staleness.

Edit: Forgot Tempest TSol, it's also quite enjoyable on occasion.

Phalanx is for use on your alt account when it becomes the best early manifest light weapon you will have. Then you slap it on everything ..

Other than that, it has no purpose

The Tempest weights only 30, so the default encumbrance bonus of most humans. So, for instance, you can equip it on a passive-less human adept and still be at 200%. It has also a bigger clip than the Hurricane. I use it sometimes on the Turian sentinel with incendiary rounds. I spread shots on group of mooks and then spam Overload. For bosses, the incendiary glitch with Warp helps.

As for the Eviscerator, I haven't used it for so long that I don't even remember the sound of this gun... It's light, has 1 more shot than the Wraith... Vanguards maybe ?

For the Phalanx, I have no clue lol...

I like using the  Eviscerator on the AIU  ..makes it much better...  and Phalanx on the Geth engee

Poor, poor Locust RIP   ..I am doing a new run in ME2..that gun is the only one I need...here, in ME3...am disappoint.....very badly

Tempest on the SmashDept work nicely...  Mantis on any Infil. with the sniper damage boost..is still effective on Gold

Katana makes an amazing baseball bat for a turian or batarian... Phaeston Destroyer is actually fun.

If I'm determined to play GI but am feeling guilty about it, I'll sometimes load up the Eviscerator because... GI. It certainly benefits from an increased fire rate.

I can't be much help on the Phalanx, as I only drag it out if I'm looking for a bit of variety on pistol challenges.

So I get the eviscerator-wraith comparison now. Damage tradeoff for clip size. Seems the phalanx may be lost to ancient manifest destiny. Tempest I'm still working out though.

Try the Tempest on a Drell Adept.

Why? I will but just curious.

This I have done and it works well but the TSol makes everything good. Who does the tempest shine on besides TSol/QMS (and perhaps the drell adept)?

I do miss the ME2 locust. So good.

So far the best case for the tempest I can see is Loufi's weight capacity point. But then that would only apply to a build where I skip the passive which I hardly ever do.

The only other classes I can think of right of are Vanguards, b/c the Tempest is light but not incredibly accurate, so in your face would work well, or the Destroyer, b/c lolDevastator Mode bonuses.

I just recently re-discovered the fantastic M-6 Carnifex on the AA and HS, and the Tempest on the AJ, GE and TSent. They are much-much fun!
I slapped the Phaeston on my TSent on a Platinum PUG, I did surpsingly well. (If you go behind your teammates and start burst-firing it, everbody will turn around scared, because you sound just like a lolMarauder).

Phaeston is not a bad gun

This.

Why use the tempest?  Well you use it if you don't have the hurricane, lol.  The problem with the tempest is that is really just a crappy version of the hurricane - less accurate, less powerful, and slower RoF.  BUT... if you don't have the hurricane, it's badass.  Below - tempest video by player who did not yet have the hurricane.

Tempest is as accurate as hurriance on GI and has more bullets. Overall, IMO, it has just a bit less dps, like 20-30% less but more head shots.

Eviscerator is a very good gun IMO on any class. It has that feeling of a poor man's wraith but other than that, it is not bad.

Katana is a very good gun, there is nothing wrong with it. It is also quite accurate and medium range.

Phalanx is also good just too much hurt for trigger finger.

The Locust destroys Geth, Cerberus and especially Collectors.  In fact, it's just an all around mook killer.

However, no ME2 EZ-mode, you're required to get headshots.

I used to run with a scoped Phalanx with a HVB Tempest on my HME pretty much all the time.  A balanced lightweight combo.

Using a recoil mod on your Tempest does a pretty nice job allowing it to zoom in too.

Tempest is good as a weaker but lower-maintenance version of the Hurricane. It has more ammo, better stability, and better accuracy(?). If you're considering using the Hurricane on a character but you're turned off by having to pop on a heat sink and/or a stability mod in place of damage or piercing, consider using the Tempest as a compromise. That is its niche in my mind.

Use the phalanx when you want to fool your teammates into thinking there is a combat engineer shooting at them.

I'll leave a link to Cyonan's old-but-relevant thread here so you can make an on-paper stats comparison.

http://forum.bioware...alance-changes/

The only reasons I can see to use the Tempest (if you have a complete manifest) are that it's an SMG not named Hurricane and it's marginally lighter. Like most other SMGs, it is a decent means of applying ammo powers to detonate, but so is the Hurricane.

I've never lost a game because I used the Tempest instead of a different weapon (I lost for other reasons), and I've done well using it on builds that do well with most weapons -- and that's the best endorsement I can give.

I used to occasionally, but I can't remember the last time I used an uncommon weapon.

Here are my fave common weapons.

Locust; any power focus kit (for me it's usually FQE, SE, Fury and such) with power amp & pierce or EB. I like the Locust because it's the only SMG where I can use this weapon mod combo (as other SMGs requires one of them to be either EM or Stability). I also like it's mook headshot focus gameplay. This weapon with FQE is one of my fave handicap for Gold pugs setting.

Temptest; only on accuracy boosting classes. Usually GE with stability weapon mod.

Mattock; on any kit something with Hunter Mode to make it more headshot viable due it's accuracy somewhat lacking. On PS3 I tried it with Turbo fire and Marksman, and the poor PS3 can't handle. Starts dropping frames or shots. I used to use this weapon a lot more before maxed maniifest and Harrier X. Now a days I barely ever use it. But loved it before (especially since my first manifest took forever to even unlock the Harrier).

Phaeston; I like it on combo focus kits or play style because it's a light enough weapon. Think something like KroSent with Disrupter Ammo for constant Tec Bursts with Incinerate. Or Cryo Ammo with Incinerate.

Why? I will but just curious.

The low weight for one, and the application of warp ammo while Reaving everything in sight makes for a decent damage boost. I just feel there's good synergy between the weapon and the DA.

Tempest is actually kind of fun on an accuracy-boosting class.  It becomes a lot more effective when you can get reliable headshots with it.

I actually used to equip the Phalanx on Gold as a backup weapon when using a Piranha or Raider on a class without an accuracy boost.  During a hack or escort, I would pull out the Phalanx and open up until they got in shotgun range.  I could usually pick off a mook or two that I ordinarily wouldn't have been able to get.  It's pretty decent at headshots from mid-long range.  I stopped using it when I got my Eagle leveled higher though.

Consult the GI. It gives hope to that which is weak and ignored.
