I wonder if anyone will ever defend the shuriken...

^^ I don't think anyone ever has, or ever will. I do recall someone defending the ME2 version a few days ago. Maybe somewhere in this forums history, someone found it appealing for the GI.....

As said earlier, I've a big soft-spot for the Shuriken. No, I won't defend it - but I can like broken things just as much as the uber things if I want. I guess the reason I deviate to lower SMG's is because even after a year of playing pretty hardcore, I'd be lucky to get 1xRare upgrade a month - and my Hurricane has been at IV for longer than I remember. Yes, that's still better than, say, Shuriken, but then you get into lobby's where people kick you just because you're not rocking level "X".

I refuse to cheat my way to X-All - though I do keep it in mind for ME:A, seeing as DA:I is practically a carbon copy of ME3 MP, yet even that has horrid grinding - barely better than ME3's older version - so I sincerely hope that whatever system they adopt, those who don't pay or cheat aren't struggling for months or years to get on everyone elses level of gear, especially when they probably play MORE than the payer/cheater.

Did I just see... Someone defending the Katana? Damn... I thought I had seen everything bsn has to offer :D

I wonder if anyone will ever defend the shuriken...

I like using it on my bf3 sometimes with my no adrenaline rush powers build. Lots of ammo, fast reload, it's light, and it's good at priming. I actually like it over the tempest, I don't even remember the last time I used the tempest.

That's a bit too cynical for my taste.

Before they - EA, that is - can wring out money, they need a game that people will play, so for sure they wanted to see how ME would work as an MP game. With all the talk about evil corporations doing this and that it's easy to forget that the people who make these games are people who are in this business because they're passionate about what they do - and it's obvious to me that a lot of love was put into ME3MP. EA may have made the decision to add MP to the series for their own reasons, but I'm sure that after taking the assignment, Bioware did it for theirs.

If the ultimate goal is to make money - well, isn't that true of every commercial game out there?

ME3MP was a huge success based purely on how we kept playing and playing it, even though plenty of people thought it'd die by the time Borderlands 2 came out, or by the end of the first year at the latest. After all the SP drama that must have felt good, not just to Bioware, but to EA too. MEA needs to be a game that's well-received by fans - EA knows that - and ME3MP was hugely popular and well-received considering ME series used to be purely a single-player experience.

I've seen it mentioned many, many, many times on these forums that EA made lots of money from the RNG store, but I still haven't seen anyone come up with any kind of numbers or any other evidence to support that claim (and the fact that they made MP DLC really isn't strong evidence, because there are multiple other reasons for making those).

It's definitely cynical, you're not wrong. I admit, I'm a pretty cynical person, especially when it comes to games the last few years.

And I agree with you that, though EA mandated it for their own reasons, which I maintain is purely monetary, Bioware did their best with it. But the fact remains that they are controlled by EA, and whatever EA tells them to do, they have to do. They try to make the best of it that they can, but they still have to do it. And I have no doubt that EA mandated that ME:A include MP so they can reap (no pun intended) the rewards.

As for how anyone knows that they made money, I honestly couldn't say definitively. I could have sworn I saw a couple of news articles about companies making big profits from monetizing their multiplayer games. I know for sure that GTA Online was mentioned, and I want to say ME3MP was as well, along with some other usual suspects like Battlefield and MW. But I couldn't point you to it because it's been too long and I don't recall where I saw it. Possibly Gaming Blend, but good luck finding it now. Also, I thought I remembered an interview with some off the cuff remarks from someone at either Bioware or EA about how the profits from MP were exceeding their expectations.

And like I said, I'm not one of those people who tries to demonize capitalism. I know the goal is to make money. Profit is the bottom line of every business. That's why they call it that, and I have no problem with that at all. I'd rather see them make money than see studios and publishers closing down every other week.

My problem is how they're trying to exploit every way they can to double-dip, or triple-dip or more. You pay the purchase price, but now they see dollar signs in continuing to milk money from you, but that only works if they structure the game around doing that, so certain aspects of the game aren't what they might have been, all because they need to incentivize you to sink more money into the game post-purchase.

And this is not doom and gloom conspiracy-theory stuff, this is happening. It has been for a while now and we're all watching it grow as we speak.

Cynical? Definitely, but I stand by it.

Did you play their Dragon Age: Inquisition Multiplayer?  It's even worse.

In ME3MP, at least you have progression.  You unlock a Harrier I, and you will never get Harrier I again.  Next you get Harrier II, etc.  Given enough time, you are guaranteed to eventually max everything out, because previous weapon variations, and the various equipment upgrades, get removed from the drop table.

In DAIMP, there is no progression.  Drops are 100% random, and you could receive the same crappy Raider Greatsword 20 times in a row.  Adding insult to injury, some of the weapon drops are WORSE THAN THE STARTER WEAPONS.

Multiplayer "packs" will absolutely be in ME:A, the question is which model will they be using.

TSent with a Phalanx could take over the galaxy.  And I'm not joking - textbook headshots all day long.

The Tsent would be the only ruler of a galaxy with carpal tunnel in the trigger finger. The sound of a phalanx is pretty cool though.

I never played it, but that sounds awful.

And I want to be clear that I have no problem with the companies making money, I just hate the way things are trending toward micro-transactions and building the game experience around them.

I would be totally fine with them if it weren't obvious (painfully in the case of some games) that the game's design was dictated by the agenda of pushing those micro-transactions.

Sadly, that's why we won't ever see real weapon balance.

I never cared for all the vibration, though some may consider it a feature.

the vibration is what makes it the greatest tool as every time it laid between my grasps :3

MMMmmm...  lets not forget to add the power magnifier now,

to amplify my Asari biotics all-over-my-body... Killing enemies never felt this good

As long as the option to not spend real money remains I will be satisfied. If it was a PvP game and you're ability to competently compete was hindered I would have a bigger problem. As we have displayed here through discourse, there are multiple lower level weapons that hold their own and power focused builds are always viable. It's nice to have a hurricane or javelin X but it is not necessary to do well. The real key is to play enough to earn skill. Weapon upgrades are supplementary to skill. A good player with a tempest will outperform a bad player with a hurricane most of the time.

Just played a match with vindicator/hurricane on geth trooper and it wasn't super terrible. Decent for mooks anyway. Wave 10 wipe though, figures the one time I take a weakass gun into gold for funsies I wind up in a lobby of supernoobs. Hard to finish the bottom open area hack on wave 10 white hazard reapers when you're the only one left. I might take subpar guns into gold more often if it wasn't a sure bet I'd wind up in a weak lobby with a long tiresome grind to wave 10 failure. It's like the game pays attention to how strong my loadout is and every time I take something weak it's like "ah ha let's screw him this time".

Phalanx I use as a backup for my Shadow. I can get quite a few hits at long range with it. Disciple + omniblade for melee.

It can be used on a HI pretty well, but I consider it a secondary weapon since I can hit with it at long range or something to put a melee stunner for a backup melee boost. (AIU + shotgun or AR, keep the mods for weapon damage and use the Phalanx + stunner for close encounters.)
