I only use it when it helps to synergize the reload cycle - sometimes using the power efficiency mod will improve your recharge time just enough so that you can empty a clip and reload cancel with the power. IIRC, I used to do this when I played the ACA with a hurricane and extended mag. It would enable the dark sphere detonation cooldown to complete within a single hurricane clip.
Sidebar: But... as of my latest revelation, I am thoroughly convinced that using an all power damage build is the best way to utilize this kit, even if you are using a heavy weapon (like the typhoon). The reason is two-fold: 1.) Stacking DoT, and 2.) Ascension Stance. I just did a couple solos with this type of build, and was utterly amazed at the results. The power damage bonuses allow the DoT from DC and DS to kill rather efficiently, and enable DS detonations to kill any unshielded mooks + completely strip the shields away from those who have them. Even on a 10+ second cooldown, these features are more desirable than the extra weapon damage, especially considering that things die scary fast when hit with warp or incendiary if they are already receiving DoT damage from DS and DC. Finally, add in the Ascension stance 20% extra damage bonus and the kit becomes a straight up wrecking machine.
As an example, on gold, with a typhoon X + warp ammo IV, I was able to kill an atlas in less than one clip after DC + DS detonation. I was also able to reliably kill groups of two dragoons and one phantom in about half a ciip after DC + DS detonation. It was pretty incredible. It is also nice that the cooldown on DS detonation completes within a single extended typhoon clip.
Full power damage is tempting, but it looks like the difference between my no fitness hybrid power damage/weapon damage build, you only gain 250 extra damage on dark sphere detonation every 10 seconds or so. That isn't worth it to me. Personally this is how I play him. You can swap out the PPR for CSMG if you want to do more of a power centered gameplay. But this way I don't have to respec him. He doesn't need fitness since he has good default barriers. Also ascension mode might be one of my least favorite things in the game. Extra power damage and recharge speed in return for more damage taken may sound like a good deal, especially with his power set, but the animation is long, and unless you're clearing waves really fast it doesn't last long enough. And the bang for buck just isn't there.
Having said that, I know there's different strokes for different folks, and I think they did a really good job with this character, simply because there are so many good and viable ways to spec him out. That's a sign of a pretty balanced kit IMO.
