anyone else hope this game allows co-op through squad mates?

Nope sorry.
A single character driven story as in ME1, 2, 3 is not a waste of potential.
MP is quite enough to satisfy every needs you should have to play games with your friends (and we all know how beautiful PUGs can be from time to time). You can wish for a better multiplayer, but why should you wish to inflict that on yourself even in single player is beyond me.
Even then, while you play as the main badass in the adventure, why should someone earn satisfaction being your henchman? Watching while you gallivant humanity influence in the Andromeda Galaxy? So, no ty. ME is your adventure, with you as the main hero: I don't think I would happy with timesharing a story.
tl;dr:

Is there more ways to say no than simple no?
1st, I would hate when the squaddies would break character because they are not actually characters but your friends(probably)
2nd Internet connectivity between the people would be a huge downer, I am not in an area with good high speed internet so playing online or coop is a problem, just imagine playing along tried to kill that huge monster or doing whatever and needing support from the squaddie that just got disconnected?
3rd, If your friend is better at the game than you are and is more awesome as a squaddie than your own character then why does it make you a main character?

No, never, nope. This is a terrible idea, and a dangerous one, because it's just the sort of thing they might take and run with. No nice way to say it.
I guess making my co-op partner sit there while I wander around the hub endorsing shops and reloading branching conversations could be fun for me.

That always seemed like the biggest wasted potential of the original trilogy, especially with 3's multiplayer. Just let friends drop in and out to control squad mates, like henchmen in fables 2-3.
Co-Op in single player games sucks. Crap like that hurt many games like Fable 2/3 and Saints Row 3/4.

Unless the game is specifically designed around co-operative play like Divinity: Original Sin, or Sword Coast Legends where the other players can influence the narrative then such a feature will only hinder the game overall. Even if the feature was a little bonus that only cropped up during combat, (similar to the drop in/drop out feature of games like Gladius) I don't see it working without local/couch co-op being supported. No one wants to cycle through menus, invite their friends, wait for their friends to accept the invite and log into the game, and then play a 2 minute section of combat before jumping back into dialogue trees for the next 30 minutes.
Now a co-op specific narrative similar to SWTOR's Flashpoint mechanic could work, but I would be leery of such modes as they tend to be extremely repetitive (who wants to watch the same cutscene 1,200 times?) and also have a nasty habit of limiting variety for the sake of 'narrative' ( it's either going to ignore the fact that one of the players is a Rachni, or it won't include such outlying aliens in order for the interaction to make sense). The best form of compromise I can think of is to have a separate MP mode called 'Historical Battles' and the game mode will feature several key combat situations from the trilogy where the players get the opportunity to play as Shepard and Co in a MP environment. Iconic firefights, like the climbing of the Citadel tower from ME 1, or the Suicide Mission from ME 2, to the Battle on Earth from ME 3 would be some of the scenes you could select and play out. No dialogue choices or general roleplaying elements, just 4 players rolling up on to battle as Shepard, Legion, Grunt, and Mordin while they blast away at Collector forces.

Not universally. Many FPS games (and some others) were enriched by it.
I can't fathom playing ME1 (or any RPG with a divergent storyline) and thinking "this would be better co-op" though.

I'd only consider it if you maintain control of the squadmate during conversations. So Player 1 is having a solemn talk about a fallen comrade or whatever and you're running around in the background shooting at bits of scenery.

I'd be fine with it, if it was implemented well.
Do bear in mind that simply because it exists, you're not being forced to use it. If you don't want your squadmates controlled by other people, then it won't happen, regardless of whether such a co-op mode exists. There is no need to panic about something that would not effect your game if you didn't want it to.
It's how Dead Island worked, and I solo'd that game 95% of the time. The game was actually easier to survive when soloing, so it had no negative impact whatsoever that I chose to forgo the co-op mode.

I enjoy controlling multiple characters at once too much. Controlling one squaddie to set up a combo, then commanding the other to knock 'em down. Giving up that control would be like solo-ing, which I prefer not to do.

I'm more concerned about the changes to branching dialogue paths, choice driven cutscenes, etc that co-op design might necessitate, since presumably they wouldn't want it just tacked on all half assed. Does the other player participate, a la TOR? Do they just twiddle their thumbs? Is it only in combat missions, or whenever you're out with your squad?
This is great for linear action games - playing something like Gears of War, or Halo, campaign co-op is wonderful. But I'm not convinced that this could ever work for Mass Effect, and I don't want them to try it, frankly. The co-operative multiplayer mode, if it's anything like ME3, is probably going to be pretty damn good, and I think that should be the extent of it.

No.
Games like Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 6, Dead Space 3, and others have all made me very negative when it comes to co-op in a story based game. Yes there are some that have pulled it off, but to me it has been because I had no expectations of the story in those games either.

I can't think of any reason not to.
It would be even better if you could replay missions without restarting the game or reloading a save. There are certain missions in ME3 which I would have loved to have played with other people.

Personally, I would really like to have SWTOR like co-op meaning that there's room for 3 other players (or just one in the case of andromeda) who can participate in dialogue with dialogue choices. I don't mind some extra game-story segregation where there's suddenly two Shepard's when we're talking optional multiplayer.
I really want Mass Effect to have co-op in the single player campaign somehow.
