As we've seen with Cole, it is possible for a Spirit to become human or at least human like and with the Divine/Spirit of Faith we've seen the opposite a mortal becoming a spirit. I imagine it's similar to Avatar version of the afterlife. Take General Iroh for instance. He was very spiritual human when he was alive and after death he went to the Spirit world where he became one. In lore it's said the souls of the dead pass beyond the Fade. but I get the feeling some souls identify with a concept or emotion that they held very strongly in life it allows them to ascend and become a spirit or just as possible a demon of that emotion or concept.

Actually General Iroh traveled to the spirit world before dying... his body remained behind and eventually passed, while his mind or soul remained in the spirit world.
I think Niall gave us insight to this. He spent too much time trapped in the dream that his body began to lose itself, so he couldn't come back again. I believe he said he was doomed to fade away. I guess that's what happens if someone don't go beyond the fade.
Remember that Dive Justinia is a special case since she came on physical form into the fade, and I'm still on the boat that this was just some sort of spirit bound by Justinia to remain and leave a message, like the spirit from Jaws of Hakkon or simply an echo.
As for spirits turning human, I guess they begin to age normally as they become more real and eventually die... the intiguing part would be if they are reborn and renewed or they fade away like a common mortal.

I wonder if it would be possible to combine the two? If the same mortal/spirit could undergo both the mortal->spirit transformation AND the spirit->mortal transformation?
You could use it to reincarnate. Upon dying, you would leave a "ghost" of yourself in the fade (like the Divine / Spirit of Faith). The spirit could then manifest itself as a human, like Cole did, and could eventually become a human, like Cole did.
Streamline the process using magic, enchantments, and the help of friendly spirits, and you could be functionally immortal.

I know right? True the chances are high we will lose our memories, a lot, but isn't eternal life a nice trade off? We can continue to defend Thedas from it's many threats.
