Alternatives for SCS on vanilla BG1?

I wanted to play SCS for vanilla BG1, because I have that weird "purist" thing going on where I absolutely loathe playing BG1 with BG2's mechanics, including kits, proficiencies, etc.

But, as it struck me, apparently I can't. Is there something for people like me out there?

I love vanilla BG 1 also. However, David (creator of SCS) says the scripting in BG 1 is very cumbersome/difficult to code, so instead he does for BG 2 engine only.

The only thing that i'm aware of is the Heart of Fury mod, which you can find here: http://www.sorcerers...index_mods2.php. Unlike SCS this mod does not improve AI, however. It merely makes opponents een lot tougher by improving their hitpoints, THACO, AC and damage.

Edit: i've never played this mod, but i assume even the pathetic assassins in Candlekeep are now deadly opponents....

Interesting, Flamedance - I may need to try that out.

The Heart of Fury approach may work for some, but others might find it silly. My understanding is that it more than triples the HP of all enemies. It also grants all enemies 5 point bonuses to both THAC0 and AC. I wouldn't want to play BG1 that way. I'd much rather have smarter AI.

I think the best approach may be to use SCS in the BG2 engine and then tweak the BG2 engine to make is as much like BG1 as possible.

You can reskin BG2 so that it looks like BG1. Serg Blackstrider may be able to help you with that.

The BG2 engine can be forced into 640 x 480 mode.

There is a BG1 walking speed mod. There may be a BG1 proficiency mod.

As for the kits, you can just refrain from using them.

I'm sure there are other angles, too.

It's not perfect -it's not what you asked for, exactly- but it may be worth a try.

Good hunting!

Best,

A.

I would think Heart of Fury is do-able with a balanced, 6 man party. But I could easily imagine it giving a solo-er (Alesia's usual preference) nightmares.

I think it would be doable, just weird and un-fun.

But who knows: maybe it's exactly what the OP needs. People differ.

Nah, I guess it's time to shed my bias and just go through BG1 with Tutu or something. Thanks guys.

I use EasyTutu for my BG 1 runs using BG 2 engine - I've been pretty satisfied overall. Some of the NPC default proficiencies are pretty silly - Ajantis gets dual wield pips - he would get hit ton by everyone - he should be using a shield until/unless he gets the DEX gauntlets. Potions don't stack, which is really curious, since both vanilla BG 1 and BG 2 both supported this. But otherwise pretty true to the vanilla I would say.

I think that's the right call. As mentioned earlier, it is possible to simulate the BG1 experience, albeit imperfectly.

Easy Tutu has a version of the fix pack within it, IIRC. The Fixpack prevents potions (and many spells) from erroneously stacking.

Just one more silly question:
Does installing those merger mods for BG1 somehow screw with my BG2 files?
I already made a backup, but friends and I are having a BG2 online game on a long-term hiatus which I don't want to disturb. Shouldn't be a problem, or would it?

Also, Alesia, your no-reload write-ups were a massive inspiration to try this install now - only that it's also extremely difficult to decide on a character and party composition. :P So many cool options! I might just try for a stereotypical party (I tend to overdo meleers) and make use of all the cool stuff I've learned by proxy to clean up my playstyle and minimize reloading.

Thanks for the responses.

EasyTutu installs itself into its own directory - does not alter my BG 2 install at all. Not certain about BGT though...

Even if something does install to same location, though, it's no problem if you backed it up first - just rename your directories depending on what you doing (single player play, multi-player, etc.). I do this for a MP run I have with friends - I don't use that install for single player games.

As BGT uses the BG2 engine it does change the BG2 directory.  As Corey says there's no problem (if hard disk space is available) in having multiple BG installations on the same computer though.

That's kind of you to say. I'm glad too hear it.

I know I wouldn't be playing and posting were it not for Aasim, Blackraven, Corey Russell, Gate70, Grimwald the Wise, Grond0, Serg Blackstrider, USSNorway and all the other players who have recently joined us. I'm glad we can all help each other have fun!

Feel free to join the No Reload Challenge when you're ready!

Best,

A.

On this topic, if one likes BG1 and wants a challenge other than SCS, I reccomend Fields of the Dead by Echon. It's mostly a PnP conversion; but a really good one. While the story of BG1 is unchanged, the monsters/items/spells are all changed accordingly to PnP rules. I had the priviledge of testing this mod, and I can assure you it's great fun seeing some of "proper" PnP monsters in action (Death Dog and similar).
