How do people feel about women (and men) who dress like that in real life? I work with a lot of fit people who always dress like that. Always wearing the tightest thing they can find. I don't think twice about it.

There's a difference between a real person who has decided to dress a particular way of their own accord, and a fictional person who has been designed to appeal to a particular audience. My issue with Miranda isn't so much the way she's dressed, though. It's the way the camera is constantly pointing at her butt.

Between that, Jack's shirtless look, Samara's cleavage and Ashley's ME3 makeover I spent plenty of time rolling my eyes.

Also, should no one look sexy in a video game?

Sure. Just not at the expense of wearing clothes that actually make sense. For example, when you talk to her, does Samara actually seem like a person that would wear a revealing outfit instead of priotitizing safety in battle?

By contrast, I have no issue with Isabela's battle corset - she relies on distracting her oppontents and not getting hit in battle, and it seems perfectly in-character for her.

First, actual people can make their own choices. Fictional characters are designed and have no agency. Because they're fictional. That's the difference. It's one thing to question the priorities of what a design team decides for a character as opposed to the choices a real person makes about his or her own attire.

Second, it's more about appropriateness to situation. I couldn't care less how "sexy" a character wants to look in their down time, but when they're in a professional situation or on the battlefield? Wear professional clothing or armor. When the scene is meant to be dramatic? Skip the gratuitous camera angles.

That's all. No one's saying to cut the sexy out. Mostly asking for context to be a factor in the decisions, consent when it regards our own characters (don't make my character act like a cat in heat unless I made that dialog choice myself), and diversity would be awesome, too (athletes can be both physically fit and attractive while still having a wide range of body types, why can't game characters?)

2 cents.

For every ten complaints about Miranda you get one complaint about Jacob's gratuitous butt shot or Thane's tight fitting uniform.

I think people overreact to images of beautiful women with voluptuous bodies. Asarri commandos have been wearing tight "leathers" since ME1. Not as many complaints.

Also, why are people white knighting fictional characters?

Anyone else got a feeling that the structure in the concept video is a safe house of last resort?

My pie-in-the sky wish is for unarmed combat. And no, this is not because I secretly hope every new IP will scratch my Jade Empire itch. It isn't! Why are you asking?!

*quietly lights candles around a horse-demon shrine*

But in reality, if the combat is anything other than shooty shooty gunaroonie, I am on that like Kang the Mad on a flying machine. For some reason, I just can't get into gun combat, even if it's paired with Bioware storytelling. Even though I know that archery and magic are functionally identical to future-guns. Even if the guns shoot lasers and lightning and, I don't know, stampeding herds of wildebeest.

I know that it's weird and irrational. I tried to push past it so I could play KotOR and ME for the story. But I just... couldn't. Something about holding a gun instantly kills the escapism, for me.

Yup, my ideal preference would be Bioware tackling an eastern setting but if what's been said about a 'contemporary setting' is accurate I've love an X Men type world, The game could explore the ramification of people being born with powers. The cabin we saw in the trailer made me think of a frontier type setting, perhaps those that are born with powers are isolated from the rest of the population in arid wilderness.

What's this trailer that I've heard being mentioned? Not the one from E3 right?

Has to be; it's the only small glimpse we've had of the game so far.

Thus I believe you could agree with my solution. Never "sexualize" NPCs, dress everyone to appease the most recent/popular Social Justice Warrior trends, but let the players be as completely objectified, sexualized and not fitting in the character as they want. Because the player, I mean, we, are real person and therefore we should be able to decide what to wear right?

As I said in ME:A forum, I have no problem with Bioware making the whole galaxy made of black, bald, fat, lesbian women in armors so big you can't tell if it is a human being or a reaper under it. They are NPCs and Bioware do whatever they want to please their own morals and to fit their story but when it comes to PC it really irritates me the way Bioware forces us to be dressed boringly. In fact they go the opposite, they sexualize women NPCs like Isabela, Viviene (I use a mod to have Vivienne's clothes), Miranda and the whole ME3 cast but the player can't. So instead of letting us, as you said, real people, have freedom to choose how we want to be they are indeed pleasing others by sexualizing women.

So why not let us choose between dressing as practical as Cassandra or as hot as Viviene? Want to be warrior'ish? Ok! Posh mage'ish? Ok, too. Cleavage or not is your choice. Same in ME, why can't you dress like Miranda? I mean, is it ok to present NPC to please men but it is not ok for you to have a character like that yourself? For me it is absolutely the other way around. Because if you want to dress like that ok, your choice (well, I don't believe in choice, but it is the popular trend among humans) now for NPCs there is absolutely no reason for them to be sexy.

Could be, it is a semi-contemporary setting (no idea where that tweet went...) so it is entirely plausible.

This gives me terrible flashbacks to ME2-3 designers deciding to prioritize sex appeal over sense in their character designs...

Hm.

Well, allow me to say this:

1. I never worked on Mass Effect.

2. My "that's not very sexy" comments had nothing to do with characters at all, but with mission design. Missions/quests can be sexy, too, and they don't even need bikinis. Well, not always.

It could be... It might also be a piece of lab equipment. The "shack" is decked out in solar panels so I thought it might be someone's remote lab.

Reviewing more writing candidate submissions today. Objectivity in the face of irritability is hard.

Word of gentle advice to writing applicants: I know you're trying to impress and mean well, but...don't write my characters. Just...do not.

It *can* be done well -- I've see it -- but it's a dangerous road to travel. You stand to lose more than you gain.

Sentient bikinis as quest-givers, semi-confirmed rumor.

Probably is. Or maybe those solar panels are used to keep some cold and frosty brews in the fridge, brah.
