I really hope it's nothing to do with superheroes or a post-apocalyptic setting. And I'm including zombies in the latter. A realistic setting doesn't interest me at all. I mean, I do read realistic fiction, but my favorite genre there is the historical novel. I would love an RPG set in, say, Ancient Rome, even if it had no supernatural elements whatsoever, but I don't think it's likely to happen. I'm not going to make any definitive statements until we know more, but I can't think of anything that would make me interested in a contemporary setting with no speculative fiction elements.
Trying to stay within that "contemporary" framework there are a few things I would like, though. My top picks would be:
- Something Lovecraftian, as mentioned above. It could be inspired by Lovecraft or just a straight up adaptation, since it's all public domain by now. They get a lot of flexibility here, being able to incorporate elements from both fantasy and science fiction without a hitch. Great atmosphere and certainly contemporary.
- Urban fantasy or portal fantasy. The difference can be somewhat blurry, but speaking in broad terms the former refers to fantastical elements present in a (wait for it) contemporary setting while the latter refers to fantasy worlds accessible from our own. For the former think the Dresden Files or American Gods. For the latter look along the lines of Alice in Wonderland, The Chronicles of Narnia, or His Dark Materials. Sometimes they come packaged together, as in The Magicians.
