It definitely has that look and feel. When I first saw the image, I was reminded of those little tin research stations on Eden Prime in ME1.

Pretty sure that research stations in the Antarctic etc. have that kind of look and feel too.

If the game takes a sci-fi turn, it could involve aliens, or genetic experiments gone awry.  If that is our home or at least our home base, then it could be either a fancy RV (implying our PC is wealthy) or it could be our mobile home (implying our PC is not so wealthy)... or our research station, where we're out in the middle of nowhere with one to two coworkers who may or may not become party members during the game.

The aesthetics don't scream "horror," to me, but you can't rule horror out.  Could be a zombie game.  (If so, I won't buy it, horror is just not my thing.  Nor are zombies.)

A research station in a remote location would imply that we're either one of the workers, or we're one of the experiments.  I guess which sounds better depends which you prefer.  If we're a worker, that jacks up the chances we're looking at a horror game, or a game involving alien invasion.  But, with wanting to tell "contemporary stories," I'd argue that BioWare probably wants something more mundane to deal with than an alien invasion--something where we can maybe experience more real-life type stories while still enjoying whatever element of the fantastical that they include.

So, some possibilities:

  • BioWare does a superhero game.  We become superheroes in the research station, either because we are experiments or by accident (or on purpose).
  • Werewolves.  The screenshot is out in the woods, after all.  Weirdly I would be totally okay with this.  Seriously.  Let me be a werewolf trying to live in modern society.  I would have so much fun with that.  Companions could be your pack, or clueless normal humans.
  • We're normal humans researching strange phenomena on whatever planet (they did say it was a fictional world, but that could be a fictional Earth) we are on.  Possibly we are working to keep things secret so the public is safe and doesn't panic?
  • Aliens.  What precisely to do with aliens, I don't know.  Alien invaders, infiltrators?  Protecting peaceful alien visitors?  No idea.
  • Something considerably more mundane.  Politically oriented, maybe?  Shenmue was a hit, and it had nothing really magical about it.
  • Urban fantasy.  We might be trying to prove or disprove magical occurences.
  • Zombies.  Because research stations as a starting place are hardly ever good news.
  • Genetic experiment gone awry.  You ARE the experiment.  Have fun being hunted.  Maybe someone will help you?  If it's a party based game, that is...
  • Genetic experiment gone awry.  You are a researcher possibly involved in said experiment.  Maybe it affected you, or maybe it affected others around you.  You might be trying to cure yourself, or you might be trying to clean up the mess you helped to make.

Those are just off the top of my head.  I am sure you can come up with more and better guesses!

The screenshot has a kind of US southwest feel to it. (The desert with the big rock formations in the background.)  With the whole remote research outpost vibe, could be something about aliens.  That could easily be in a contemporary setting.

Also of note, they do mention designing cities for this game. :)

You know, thinking on it?  Normally we are hardened warriors in a BioWare game, even if we're mages or rogues.  Shepard was a soldier.  The Inquisitor is apparently combat experienced.

It'd be a nice change of pace if we did, in fact, turn out to be someone like a scientist, or an engineer, or a maintenance person.  Or even a janitor.  Then starting at level 1 and barely able to achieve anything would make a lot more sense!

I just hope it's not a shooter. I hate shooters (even when it's inside a genre I love, like Mass Effect).

I thought Isaac Clarke being an engineer in Dead Space was pretty cool, so I'll support this. Although, it needs to make sense. Clarke primarily used engineering equipment to fight, so it worked well.

Edit: As for the Inquisitor being a hardened soldier, well, not in most of the backstories.

If scientists are involved I really hope they stay far away from the "oh noes I'm just a science book which end is gun???" thing this time. Maybe it's because I'm in a discipline that involves lots of fieldwork in remote locations, but the scientists I know IRL include military veterans, a nationally ranked triathlete, several ripped martial artists, etc. I remember being surprised at how wussy the scientists came off in ME1; it seemed out of tune with the generally-progressive nature of BioWare games.

(And yeah, I know how whiny that sounds. Someone's got to live up to the stereotype :P)

In a contemporary setting, your choices are pretty limited.  There are guns, there are melee weapons like swords or a variety of blunt objects, and of course there could be martial arts.

Alternately, if there's some fantasy aspect (or if for some weird reason we're werewolves, which I doubt), you could use a transformation and teeth/claws etc.  Possibly magic or superpowers, depending what precisely BioWare wants to do with this IP.  Again, we might be superheroes.  Or we might be in an urban fantasy (probably not though).

So here's a question for you all, and perhaps someone smarter than me will make an appropriate guess:

If we're going to have cities and the wilderness to explore, but we may also be visiting or starting in a research station, what kind of plot or game premise would lend itself to that?  And, will we continue to have companions, or will this be more of a solitary exploration type game?

For Inquisitor backstories in regard to combat/combat training: looks like only the Human circle mage would have had no combat training opportunities, prior to their circle's fall. Possibly the Human Noble (rogue/warrior) too, for limited training. Dalish hunter, Dalish first (would learn to help protect the clan), Dwarf - carta. Qunari is a mercenary.

So I think I'm in the group wanting a truly hopeless, average person be a protagonist and actually learning how to not be so hopeless.

Edit: it also seems like Bioware is going deeper into exploration-styled arpg's from what I can see.

Afraid I'm not familiar enough with those games to say much to that.  But maybe it's not just a researcher, maybe there's characters that are aliens or hybrid aliens (genetic experiments?).  I have this vague memory of there being a tweet about the secret IP that said something about "space nuns".  That might lend itself to a sci-fi angle. :alien:

Yes, and that concerns me.  I enjoy exploration, but at a certain point it just becomes frustrating and boring.  I like characters to interact with and rich plots.  This may be BioWare's way of trying to get their stories "off rails," so to speak, but I'm not sure if it's the right direction to go in.

And... if they go the full ARPG route, we may find our characters in this game all alone, wandering a lonely wilderness in a sparsely populated world.  And that... well, it wasn't the greatest in DA:I, even with a party.  Now imagine wandering without a party.  I imagine that would also put a damper on any romantic interludes, unless one wishes to make certain coarse NSFW assumptions about a given individual's love life when there are no other people around.

Question.

Do we still consider the car wreck picture released a few years back as the "first look at new BioWare IP" to be a part of the Mystery IP or was that confirmed to be a part of the now-defunct Shadow Realms (though admittedly, it does not look very Shadow Realms-y to me)? You know, this one:

Have been unable to locate the original Game Informer article so far (busy morning), but some other articles that mention it are here:

I'm not too excited about that. I have Bethesda for that. I want Bioware to make Bioware games! Otherwise my favourite type of game will cease to exist :(

Hmm..interesting, especially since it's from almost four years ago. I guess it's possible it's from the new IP and it's taken this long, because of Mass Effect and Dragon Age, for it to start production. Or maybe it's from another project that got cancelled?

This has been kinda their thing since BG 2. It's what Bioware is known for. NWN and NWN SoU didn't have them, but Hordes did as has everything they've done since, except Sonic.
I'd think dropping it completely would make more trouble than keeping it.

Wait..... DA:A didn't have romances and that DLC was great!

I seem to recall that being part of a cancelled C&C reboot.

I want a steampunk game, honestly, but I don't think the new IP will be it. I do love that genre, though.

I think the only thing I hope it isn't is post-apocalyptic? I love the genre and enjoy Fallout, but I'm definitely feeling burnt out on the genre too. Saying that, though, if it offers deeper characters than Fallout, which Bioware always does, I'll still play it and enjoy it.

Honestly not sure what they mean by contemporary, though. I mean that hints it will be modern day, but what do they plan to do with modern day? Those concepts don't really tell us one thing or another, which is probably why they're the ones they shared.

Yah I think that screenshot is from C&C. The "secret" IP that this thread is talking about is not Shadow Realms either, and the video shown in the thread is not from Shadow Realms. The "secret" IP is being mainly worked on in the Edmonton Studio, Shadow Realms was being worked on by Austin.

Could be anything. Even when you talk about superheroes and powers, there is different approaches, like Daredevil vs Heroes, for example. I don't like shooters' gameplay. If we get to use guns with DAI-style combat or like The Witcher's crossbow, it would be ok for me.

I want a steampunk game, honestly, but I don't think the new IP will be it. I do love that genre, though.

Yeah, steampunk would be awesome, but sadly, I don't think it's the case here.

The OP made it sound like the video was new. Just wondering why they've made a thread about it now.
