I hate it when someone knows something, and teases about it, without telling you a damn thing. ![]()
Unless I'm that person, in which case it's totally fine. ![]()
Or an Adams Family rpg!

That's how I feel every time I read this thread.
I was thinking along the lines of that youtube coming out declaring that the new ip was going to be an action game devoid of rpg elements. Inthe past BioWare does not seem to respond when people are on the right tack of things but do seem to toss out nuggets if they think people are on the wrong track so to speak.
One day they gonna troll us (hah, like they're not doing this already) and do the exact opposite, but for now... I like the way you think.

BUUUUUTTTTTT they also tend to starve us of info a bit before E3. And vaguely tweet about progress. Both of which are happening. ![]()
I haven't been keeping up with this thread as of late, but I did run across something.
In that video they say that ...
In that video they say that ...
- BioWare is moving away from RPG's
- BioWare could be working on an action game
- BioWare is committed to action development according to Investor's day
- That probably means it's the new IP.
Nobody from EA or Bioware has ever said Bioware is moving away from RPGs, that's completely an exaggeration and the video is wrong to suggest it.
One slide from the investor conference mentioned that Bioware was a studio that could help EA expand its market share in the action genre. We have no idea if this refers to ME Andromeda, the new IP, or something else entirely. Remember that ME2 and ME3 (and maybe the first one too) were always known as "action RPGs".
Other reporting I've seen on this indicates that Blake Jorgensen meant big action games like GTA or Assassin's Creed, which is why Motive (Jade Raymond's studio) was mentioned - they're building a big new game in the style of AC.
The new IP may indeed be an action title, but I think it's way too early to jump to any conclusions based on one slide from that conference.

100% agree. Reading a liiiittttllleee too much into it. Also, they love "story telling", they're not going to go further than action rpg.

While I agree with assessment that this whole "Bioware's done with RPGs" is sensationalist and more than likely untrue, I wouldn't say that the "loving storytelling" means that those that enjoy it will have to stick to big RPGs.
I mean, The Last Of Us is an action-adventure horror game and it's generally highly praised for its story.

Exactly. I think those folks in the video were taking it a little too far. I don't think BioWare would ever go into the territory of 0 story only action.

I totally agree. However RPG has absolutelly nothing related to story. Not conceptually, not in practice. And the problem here is they moving away from RPG which they already did and are going further and further away.
Told a thousand times but let me explain again:
Lets see the concept... RPG = Role Playing Game. If you play a role and have rules it is RPG. No story in the name. How can you play a role without a story? As long as you are not playing yourself (well, IMO our "real" personality is also a role but... well... let's pretend it is not) it is roleplaying. So (almost) all and every videogame is roleplaying which makes the RP portion of RPG useless when it comes to videogames. And the nature of the G part should define if it is RPG or not. However, it doesn't matter if you focus on the RP or the G of RPG, story is not relevant.
Another concept... the P&P origins... If you have a character playing by D&D, GURPS or "whateveryouwant" rules it is RPG. No need for story. If I'm in a room punching a wall for no reason at all, as long as I'm using the rules it is RPG. No need for story for it to be RPG. No story at all. Not a complex one, not a simple one, not even a one liner. It is usually used and appreciated, but without story it is still RPG as long as there is a character and there are rules.
And in practice, if I open NWN or Dragon Age Origins toolsets and make completely dialogue-less modules, where you can't interact with anything, where you can only kill monsters, it is still RPG. Character development rules, stats, feats, skills... those grant they are still RPG. Not the story.
It is not STG it is RPG. It is not Story Telling Game, it is Role Playing Game. See how funny? There is no S. No story. No story required. Rules for the role the character is playing however ARE NEEDED and they are almost all gone from Bioware now. Pillars of Eternity use stats and skills in almost all interactions, it is RPG. If PoE is like 80~90% RPG then Inquisition is 2%, Jade Empire 1.5% and Mass Effect Series 0.1%. These games have good stories, which is enjoyable but since there is no S for Story in RPG... not RPG. Just good stories.
I suggest game industry create STG and STRPG labels. Seriously. Storytelling game (STG) fits better than that blurred line between RPG-ActionRPG-Action, people who like story above other things would go for it (personally I think Bioware games would fit here since they are awful shooters, awful RPGs, awful action, puzzle, awful everything but with good storytelling). Also Storytelling Roleplaying Game (STRPG) would make those who need storytelling as a relevant part of the roleplaying to know what to look for. Calling Mass Effect a STS (storytelling shooter) makes sense, calling Mass Effect RPG is insane since there are no rules related to the roleplaying. And again, because people forget: If you're going for "you are roleplaying Shepard thus it is RPG", then Super Mario World, Sonic The Hedgehog, Need For Speed and FIFA are also RPG, well, as I said before, 99.9% of the games are (if not 100%).
Specially in videogames where almost all games are roleplaying, ST (storytelling) is a way more useful label. Keep RPG for games where the rules are about RP and not to describe an almost universal idea in videogames like roleplaying a character or for having a story which a gigantic portion of other genres also have.

I see that there isn't any scotch under my desk as well. WTF.
oh, well, that we can take care of. It's upstairs.
There’s probably some on mine, or Benoit’s. You know, if needs must.
I love how our coworkers are all, "Scotch? We can hook you up." But if you need scissors? HELL NO.
First of all The definition of what an RPG is in today's day and age has become so convoluted that lets not even go there. Lets keep it simple. If you go to bioware's home page, it says the company's mission is to "To create, deliver and evolve the most emotionally engaging games in the world. Bioware creates games based on rich stories, unforgettable characters and vast world". They are hiring people by this pitch so I doubt they are lying about it.
Secondly, as I have said before I doubt you require so many writers working on a game if you are aiming to make a pure action game.
I have always played bioware games for stories and characters regardless of the format of gameplay(action, shooter, fantasy)
Also, if its any indication I think even EA has realized(after being voted the worst company in America twice) that they are better off if they let bioware do their own thing. If you follow E3, in the last two E3 conferences they have referred to bioware as "our storytellers at bioware".Heck even SWTOR is now moving to back to being a story driven game.
So while it might be true that bioware maybe experimenting with new gameplay styles(that tactics based DA spinoff), it is highly unlikely that they are moving away from storytelling and characters.
EA really has been making a lot of gamer-friendly decisions over the last few years, from adopting a "it's ready when it's ready" stance to giving fringe IPs like Mirror's Edge another shot. Not that there haven't been a few bad things too, of course, but that's inevitable (for the record, I also would have absolutely cut a campaign mode from Battlefront to get it released in time for the Star Wars movie).
Today is Wednesday. Or, as it shall henceforth be known, Meeting Day, Bringer of All Discussions.
