I'm a little sad for the no Jade Empire, but I'm very curious about what it can be this new IP. Part of me would love some steampunk, just to have something completely different from Dragon Age and Mass Effect (and I'm not so interested in a modern setting, actually. But something similar to The Order: 1886? Yuuuuummm.... I know. Not happening. But a girl can dream, right?).

But we'll see...still too early to say anything. And even if it is something I usually don't like much, maybe it will have enough qualities to make me happy anyway.

While some genres are more interesting to me than others, I can't think of many that would actually disappoint me if I heard that's what this new IP was (anything zombie or superhero related might get a sigh, simply because I'm seriously oversaturated on both of those - and this is coming from someone who is literally wearing Hawkeye-themed Converses right now).

Wuxia? Awesome! Victorian/Steampunk/Horror? Sounds good! Urban Fantasy? Great! Cyberpunk? I'm there! Contemporary? Uh, whatever that means, sure why not?

I think my favorite books lately all fall into the very non-specific "speculative fiction" category. Doesn't really fit into any particular genre, or bends it in an unexpected way. Like, if I heard they picked up some world-building tips from Jasper Fforde (my favorite speculative fiction author), I'm pretty sure I would explode.

Media in general at the moment is heavily invested in chasing popular formulas. Which is fine to an extent, but it means most things are either adaptations, sequels (or prequels), or zombies or superheroes. The most interesting stuff right now is coming out of animation (in my opinion, but you can take that with a grain of salt - I'm an animator, so I'm biased). But look at the creativity in Gravity Falls, or Stephen Universe, or Over the Garden Wall, or even the interesting takes on the Magical Girl genre that we see in Bee and Puppcat or Star vs the Forces of Evil.

Anyway. Sorry, I went on a tangent. TL;DR: I think any genre in BioWare's style could be very interesting. I would love to see them revisit Jade Empire or Star Wars again someday, but I'm pretty desperate for newness in my media right now, so even though we know next to nothing about the new IP, the suggestion that they're making something new is super exciting to me!

Zombie...sigh. More overused than vampires lately, I think is one of the really few things I would not be really interested with. I have introduced myself to superheroes only lately (yeah, as strange as it sound, I've started only this summer the Marvel Movies (stupid sexy Loki *cough*). My last superhero movie was The Dark Knight, so I have a lot of stuff to recover) so I would still be quite interested. :D

I haven't seen much about animation (sadly, here in Italy everything is translated veeeeeeery slowwwwwy. Hey, The Last Flight isn't arrived still here, that I know of!!! :pinched: ) but the italian comics are (slowly) moving forward, and many series are being revitilized and new ones start to came out. :)

While I have a few preferences and a few I want them to avoid (I too am really burnt out on Zombies, not to mention the post-apocalypse), I think I could learn to like any genre of setting put through the Bioware formula.

I'd love a Bioware Shadowrun (more or less, of course).

I wouldn't mind a setting with werewolves (because I'm scared of werewolves , like the one in an American werewolf in London not Twilight..) and there really isn't much about werewolves.

But werewolves usually means vampires :( , and it's been done to death.

And I just like werewolves , no werepanther ,werebear etc..eww.

As long as it's a curse and not a superpower I can dig it.

I think they mean that they prefer werewolves who have negative aspects to their lycanthropy. Like lack of control over timing or themselves during transformation, or full control plus full moon uncontrollability. As opposed to just folks who turn into wolves (aka a D&D Druid).

I like it when such things actually have dark and bloody consequences, not just turn the character into a human superhero that can transform into a man-wolf.

VtMB did vampires right in that way, lose too much humanity you may lose control and frenzy, lose too much blood and you frenzy, and the game actually trains you to see humans as little more than walking blood bags to be drained or manipulated. The game drives home the point that you are no longer human, and no longer live by their rules, you need to go against the grain of vampire society to maintain some humanity.

Heimdall,

I miss the original WoD... And I've always liked the conflict between the primal/predatory nature and the more 'civilized' humanity. It's one of the reasons I was able to accept WtA's genetics rather than curse.

And if you haven't read it The President's Vampire series by Chris Farnsworth goes back to more vampires as apex predators not superheroes.

On topic, a Shadowrun type game would be nice. No Cyberpunk if only to avoid the CDPR does it better crowd. Steampunk would be nice. I haven't seen anything along those lines since Arcanium. No zombies, please.

Modern magic in a non earth setting would be interesting too.

You know, I think I actually did pick up the first book of that series in an airport years ago. I remember feeling that the vampire in question fell into too many angsty-vampire-protagonist tropes for my liking. But yeah, I'm a big fan of classic WoD, though mostly Masquerade.

I hope that whatever genre they go with, it's one that is clearly defined.

If they mix things too much, I think they take a risk of people not understanding what they're in for. In other words...if they have a cyberpunk world with magic and also some post-apocalyptic thrown in...I think that's harder to grasp your mind around. I'm sure they want to innovate, and I like innovation myself, but...it'll be interesting to see how closely they cleave to a defined genre (urban fantasy, for instance, is fairly established as what it is).

For Nate, he happily acknowledges he's a monster, it's he's stuck between his geas and his nature. Plus the fact that all the camp horror stories like Freddy actually have a grain of truth.

I was partial to Mage, but I played a Brujah for about five six years in LARP. Good times.

Hm, maybe I'll give it another chance. I may have just been feeling particularly fed up with conflicted vampire characters at that point.

I came to it rather late, I never got to play more than a few games, but I've been attracted to the setting ever since. I love clash of the primal predator and 'civilized' humanity you mentioned, and the encroaching apocalyptic vibe.

To steer this in a more on topic direction, unfortunately I doubt the new IP will go in such a macabre direction, but I wish it would.

I don't know... Considering Bioware seems to love the no right answer and playing with the idea of how much do you surrender to that predator vs how much are you willing to limit yourself to stick to your principles might appeal to them. Finding the compromise when there's no real 'right' answer, seems up their alley.

Of course it'd depend on the lore they'd build around, but as I think you pointed out, Dave Gaider has a knack for world building.

He does, and it could work, but Inquisition was rather a bright and 'sanitized' experience and we all know Bioware loves their snark.

I don't know, but I'd like to see them try at the very least to incorporate some horror elements into the setting.

I wouldn't call it sanitized. Inquisition make me think of something I saw on JRR Tolkien once. It was about his experiences in WW 1. I'm trying to remember exactly what was said, but the paraphrase was that the worst evils of the war came at the hands of harmless looking bureaucrats who issued the orders.

I saw a lot of that in play in DAI. Ymmv of course.

And you can still do snark, just need to do it at the right beats.

That's sort of what Shadowrun is. Elves and Dwarves and magic and stuff in a future cyberpunk setting. Originates as a tabletop style RPG, now there are games out (the Harebrained Schemes games are really quite good, Shadowrun: Hong Kong was just released recently).

I know Mr. Gaider is a Shadowrun fan (so am I!), so I wouldn't be too surprised if there was something similar to the new BioWare IP. That said, I would expect them to shy away from what other game studios are currently doing in favor of doing their own, new thing.

Either way, I look forward to it!

i would LOVE a cyberpunk game, bioware style! plus i'm obsessed with shadowrun! i really love the genre. i dont think we have that many good cyberpunk RPG's right now.. :)

I don't believe we should expect a vampire game.  Those screens show a possible research station in a remote area.  There is a day/night cycle.  While day/night cycle would be important to a vampire in terms of staying out of daylight, why have an entire day cycle designed to look pretty out there if you can't actually go enjoy it?  Unless BioWare were writing some really weird vampires.

It's possible, but I doubt it.

Werewolves could be interesting, but I'm thinking that's unlikely too.  And, as others said, if there were werewolves, I'd rather there not also be vampires.  I guess it's doable if it's a full-blown urban fantasy, but otherwise... Maybe not so much.

Remote research stations like that are normally used to monitor environmental conditions.  Sometimes you might also have one attached to a telescope in a region with low light pollution.  Could be listening for aliens, could be some seismic activity or the like.  Could be researching the effects of radiation.  Could be an abandoned research station where horrible experiments were carried out.

We don't know anything, sure, but it is fun to guess.  I wish they'd say something more about it though.

I'm getting kind of a survival/new frontier vibe from those conceptual images. Weather systems/day-night cycles/seasons could simply be a mechanic for the sake of realism or immersion, but as we have nothing to go on, I'm thinking that is core to the story. So we can infer the game may take place over long periods of time, weather may effect gameplay or at least the story, and if you look at the building it is covered in Solar Panels, which could mean our PC is a hip research assistant in the greenest research hut in the middle of a very large urban park, but it looks to me more like the structure is supposed to be self-sustaining and isolated. If I had to guess: we are playing a more or less contemporary story where we are settling or living in a new frontier, maybe a new planet or a new part of our planet or the planet the game takes place on. I don't get how magic or urban cities would fit into this (maybe we begin in an overcrowded city or something). But I'm kind of getting some sort of weird eco-fiction vibe from what little we know now.... but in like 6 months we may learn that the premise of the series is we're a young up and coming fashion designer in New York City who discovers s/he has magical powers and jets off to his/her estranged survivalist Aunt Agatha who is really a witch and teaches us all we know as we battle evil magicians all while balancing our work/love life. Or maybe we're a trailer trash mermaid/man who lives in a kiddie pool/trailer in the middle of no-where until we learn we have to save the world's oceans, and thus the world, from plastic products...

It could be anything, but if it's survival, I don't think we can expect "new frontier."  I also don't think it's going to be sci-fi of the colonist sort (could be wrong of course).

The devs said that this IP will be/is contemporary, meant for contemporary stories.  Expect things like movie theaters and coffee shops, as opposed to spaceships.  It could be a post-apocalyptic game, but they'd be competing with the Fallout franchise, among others.

I am guessing we're probably not a soldier.  We might be a researcher at that outpost, or we might just be someone who stumbles across it.  Could we maybe be a reporter?

Actually I like that idea.  I haven't actually played Beyond Good and Evil, but that was about a reporter, wasn't it?  It might be quite interesting to have a game where evidence is the goal instead of killing enemies.

If it's a truly contemporary story, one think that I think could be cool would be a ....Mage The Awakening/The Matrix style world-behind-a-world setting.

Like, yeah you walk down the street and see coffee shops and a vintage record store and a mechanics shop...but the conceit of the game is that there are certain people who are somehow more aware of things and they see...

Aliens

Demons/Angels

Magic

Something Totally New

You get the idea.

I'd like to be a detective, personally. It could cover the horror aspect in the crimes/murders we're solving. Maybe that trailer is where a victim or suspect lived. And we'll uncover a conspiracy or something.
