I'd like to be a detective, personally. It could cover the horror aspect in the crimes/murders we're solving. Maybe that trailer is where a victim or suspect lived. And we'll uncover a conspiracy or something.

Actually, I really like that too.  Something that's actually quite "mundane," nothing magical or sci-fi about it.  I think that's one of the things I don't like about modern settings--they want to include things that don't exist in the real world, so it's harder to immerse yourself into that.

A detective story/mystery or even a story about a reporter trying to catch a certain criminal or stop a crime ring could make for a compelling contemporary story.

I'm reserving judgment on whether I'd buy whatever the new IP is, until I know what it actually is about.  As some others mentioned, I'm not always that interested in present-day setting games.  Part of that is probably because they really, really don't age well.  Play some modern setting games from the 90s or 2001 or so and you will see what I mean.  They pull from present culture, and in a handful of years they seem dated, a portrait of a time when certain catchphrases were the norm and moving forward from those seemed unimaginable.

On the upside, if you play a professional they may not use catch phrases. lol

To go for a non-mundane option, I wonder if it'd be possible to make a Twilight Zone type of game. Like not necessarily all horror cus not every ep of TZ was horror. just paranormal, but not in the typical fashion.

Maybe a political/conspiracy thriller mixed with some espionage, and a little horror thrown in as well?

Thing is, I've watched that presentation, and those images were shown when talking about MEA Iirc. And the research station looks a lot like the prefabs in ME, in addition to the area looking similar to what we saw in the MEA trailer.

Thing is, if you had watched the presentation a little closer, they specifically said those images were for the new IP.

Yeah they talk about it, but it looks exactly like MEA enviroments. Plus EVERY thing is tagged with conceptual prototype.

Until they have actual story elements that tell me otherwise. I'm not buying that these bits mean much of anything.

That's kind of why the thread is entitled secret IP.

Because it's a secret. We don't have much info.

I'm well aware, but if I may, limiting what the game may be based on a couple of enviromental shots that may just be test footage to see how such enviroments would work in Frostbite, especially considering the proceeding image was that of a birch forest.

And about contemporary stories. Doesn't mean the stories may be set in modern day. From context, it was more likely they reference was to relevance not setting.

It's just for fun.

Speculation is rampant in this thread because that's all there is.

It's not going to be space sci-fi and it's not going to be high fantasy, because they won't make a game to compete with themselves.

It's not going to be Star Wars or jade empire
Spoiler
because it's new.

Otherwise, any idea is fair game in speculation. I would think it's not going to be to similar to shadow realms, since that recently got canned.

And I doubt their interested in telling a story without some type of magic (like a straight police or counter-terrorist story) because that doesn't seem their style.

As to what? Post-apocalypse or maybe even post-post-apocalypse (world is already significantly rebuilt) would seem most likely, but I hope not.

I hope they try something daring.

Even a quasi-horror game with a bioware twist would be interesting.

Sorry, it's just I've see people get themselves so wedded to an idea of what something is over one or two pictures/comments etc, and then much screaming and pissing and moaning.

So I'm really gun shy about making such jumps.

Yeah, but the crazies were here and bsn became a toxic mess for like two three years. Thus the gun shy.

The BSN/Bioware forums have always had toxic individuals. I think every corner of the internet does, unfortunately. It's best just to avoid/put those particularly people on the ignore list and go about your business. No need to be gun shy then! I think the majority of people know it's completely up in the air and that any speculation they do has a high percent chance of being wrong and are completely chill with that idea.

As for speculating in general, I would actually love to see Bioware tackle psudo-horror/thriller at some point in time. I'm not normally a horror person because such games rely on gore and jump scares a little too much for my tastes, but Bioware have shown in Jade Empire, Dragon Age and Mass Effect that they can pull off some pretty chilling moments through story alone. That one tavern in Jade Empire still stands out to me today, actually! Sure, other games have tackled such themes before, but I still remember the 'holy frick!' feeling I had when investigating that place.

Yes they have, but I've never seen it as bad as it was back during DA2.

I remember a quote from Dave Gaider where he said something to the effect of people had built in their minds a different game than Bioware delievered.

And it's true. A lot of the complaints went past legitimate into threats over disagreements on how characters were written, and all sorts if things because people hooked themselves to a concept or two and ignored the rest.

Again thus the gun shy.

In my travels, I ran across a 1080p version of the video...

I was hoping this would be set somewhere in a city. I do like that it's contemporary though.

What we see are "conceptual prototypes" so beyond a more contemporary setting we really know nothing.

Some food for thought:

https://career4.succ...inkkw4wFUw8Eoo=

Senior Gameplay Designer

BioWare is a division of EA which crafts high quality multiplatform role-playing, MMO and strategy games, focused on emotionally engaging, rich stories with unforgettable characters and vast worlds to discover. Since 1995, BioWare has created some of the world's most critically acclaimed titles and franchises, including Baldur's Gate, NeverWinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, Mass Effect and Dragon Age. BioWare currently operates in Edmonton (Alberta, Canada), Montreal (Quebec, Canada) and Austin (Texas).

BioWare’s games have continually achieved critical and commercial success. All of our published titles are highly rated at www.gamerankings.com; in fact we have 6 games in the top 1% highest rated games of all time! In 2008, BioWare was acquired by Electronic Arts, a leading global interactive entertainment publisher. For more information on BioWare, visit www.bioware.com, or follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/bioware . • Create documentation and prototypes for specific and exploratory game systems.

  • Familiar with third/first person shooter mechanics, experience with cover systems and cameras
  • Comfortable collaborating with groups within animation and programming
  • Thorough understanding of scripting and programming concepts with the ability to implement.
Excellent knowledge of RPGs, current technology and tools, design concepts and game balancing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members from different locations and different disciplines.
  • Ability to critique the concepts of play in a group environment
  • Willingness to adapt and iterate designs.
  • A passion for gaming

Not sure if I misunderstand something. It looks like they're looking for a senior gameplay designer for a party-based shooting RPG. We know that DA is not a shooter and MEA is being developed by Montreal studio, so this game may be the secret IP.

If the new IP takes place in the modern day, it will probably use guns.
