What's the purpose of this name? Yes, we know its purpose for story pacing, and wanting to be a god, yadda yadda.. but why this name specifically? Why is being known as 'elder' important?
Why 'Elder One'?

I think almost all the reasons are meta, except the fact that he's old. As already stated, it sounds ominous. Bioware didn't want us to know who it was, so it's mysterious. I think if they didn't want his identity to be a mystery in both the game world and real world, he would have simply been called Corypheus the whole time. He seems to be very proud of that name, and his lackeys use it, so it's not like they use Elder One out of reverence or something.
Also a bit odd since there was a sylvan called The Old One
And random trivia: I thought he was going to be some kind of spirit.

Okay I'm not really looking for meta reasons, as those are pretty clear! Legacy players would already pretty much get who he was, but I know it was 'Elder One' for the sake of new players getting even a minimal sense of mystery about the antagonist.
So I guess the narrative reason (flimsy as it at least kinda is) is that while he may be 'the will that is Corypheus', he doesn't want to be that anymore, but instead have a name that will hold a legacy for thousands of years, separate from the Golden/Black City disaster. A new story for himself.
EDIT: I guess I was just wondering if there's any other reason. Like why 'Elder One' specifically. I guess because he's super old, ha. (though not as old as elven gods!)

Maybe he's the older among the seven magisters or because he's the first to enter the black city.
And him being the conductor of silence and Dumat high priest gives him the same status among his kin as the old god , Dumat is the first and most powerful among the old gods and so is Cory is the first and most powerful among the original magisters.

Well isn't that the name he's using with the Venatori at first? The message he wants to send them is that he's going to restore Tevinter's ancient glory. Emphasizing that he's from the days of Tevinter supremacy serves that end (even though really he's from the moment when it was all falling apart).

Tevinter resurgence. Yes, that's a good reasoning, thanks!

I think I might have liked if he was called The Conductor instead.

Would've been even more obvious then -- his silhouette in the opening is a big hint already -- since people knew back during Legacy what his name meant.

And I'd be fine with that, since I don't consider it an important thing to have a mystery about this guy. There'd still be just enough for new players.
Okay, maybe not the Conductor exactly, but a synonym would have worked.
I'd have rather a focus be on fleshing out Cory, which we didn't get and the devs seem to regret. I now play the Mage/Templar/Haven section and just go "Ugh... this could have spent more time on making the 'Elder One' interesting instead of just referencing him from a literary 'distance'."

How is it 'ominous'? A little sad maybe but hardly ominous. 'Elder One' sounds like an OAP who can't remember where he put his glasses.

Certainly a better name then The Tall One.
You made me think of the Mighty Tallest from Invader Zim. Granted, Corypheus isn't the tallest in the Dragon Age universe, but... It just made me laugh, ok?

Parts of the Chant from WoT Vol 2, seem to confirm that Corypheus was indeed the ringleader and mastermind of the plot to breach the Golden City, having gone to the other seven high priests of their respective Old Gods and convinced them to join him in his scheme.
I think in-universe, he was forced to use yet another alias because the name "Corypheus" was known to the Wardens. Why he went with Elder One, I have no idea, because it really doesn't describe him in a flattering or imposing way?
I think that Samson's nickname for him is far better, because as cliche and overused as it is, you can't go wrong with "The Master".

That's what I figure. I mean the collection of the Venatori cult has happened between Legacy and Inquisition, and either way you take the story, with In Hushed Whispers or Champions of the Just, he has gained power and influence with and through them. If he's sought out a Tevinter cult, then he's pretty much guaranteed to be promising them promises of Tevinter's return to glory. Why wouldn't the Tevinters praise him for that and give him a title, and is there really a better fit than 'the Elder One,' as in one of the ancient Tevinter magisters?
