howdy!

a long term neverwinter nights 1 player here. ive been workin on an idea to start up a server and wanted to ask if any of you amazing folk knew of a good host provider?

here's the catch though: my closest friend wanted to pay for the server, but lives in Canada. we wanted to see if anyone knew of a specific provider that could accept that form of payment. the one that sprang to mind at first was http://jestservers.com/

ive worked with them in the past but didnt know if they'd accept her currency as payment

if anyone knows of a good referral let me know :) and thank you!

Why not just host it yourself? That's what I do. Doesn't take much to set up.

were not really sure what to go with tbh.

this is our first adventure in servers and we decided to go with a provider who could just simply... host it for us! and not have to worry about setting up a server! what might be easy for one person might not be for another. unless you wish to disclose your entire knowledge of the exact knows and hows of running our own  :D  that'd be friggin cool!

Essentially all you need is the Standalone server program. I think neverwinternights.info has a link to it. Load up a module with this. Ensure you port forward 5120-5300 on your router to whatever machine you are using and provide your IP address to players. At least that's the bare bones. Best to have a dedicated machine, but you can do without if you need to. Ran my server from a laptop for like 3 weeks once when I had to fix the host machine.

Bar that... I think Baaleos was providing hosting service at one point. Not sure if that is still going on.

oh thank you. thats actually a very good references! ive been trying to "ease away" from jestservers.com as they can be abit pricy! ($35 usd a month can be pretty steep, and just to set up a server will cost $92 on setup!)

i will contact baalesos and in the mean time try to set up a standalone again. the problem i had last time was the port forwarding and ip address. i gave the ip address with port to my friends but they would "time out" or disconnect

and thank you!

If you want to give running and hosting the server yourself a shot ... and you use Skype ... I could talk you through the set up (live or IM there). Just send me a add request and add a note to it if your Skype name isn't the same as your login here so I know who it is. My Skype login is the same as here ... "kalbaern". I'm normally available from 8pm to midnight USA/EST.

I went with Vilayer LTD https://www.vilayer.com to host my Ravenloft server.

My total cost is $21.00 a month- payable through Paypal. I am sure Paypal can do what is needed to exchange Canadian Dollars to US Dollars.

Setting up the server with Vilayer was not exactly easy- there was no real guide to do it, and frankly I spent close to 14 hours just getting all the hak files uploaded. Figuring out how to get the actual mod loaded as a server took some time too. But once I did the server was up, was/is very stable, and listed on NeverRun right away. The only challenge now is getting players to come and play.

Good Luck!

@ shova

i was looking at Vilayer and it seemed like a decent fit, pricing seems fair, but is there any way i could contact you in regards to some questions? i wanted to know: my friend who is buying lives in Canada (location will be disclosed to myself) and the last server we tried buying withheld an authrization Hold on there card becaues they didnt have a Zip Code(which seemed very odd). Would youi know id that that would be an issue with Vilayer?

The only way to pay Vilayer was with Paypal- I have no idea how hard it would be for you Canadians to use it- I'm a Texan. That being said- I did not have a Paypal account before I signed up with Vilayer- I was actually directed in the sign-up process to Paypal- and after completing sign-up with Paypal- I was returned back to Vilayer where everything I had entered for my server sign up was still there and waiting. Overall, to sign up for both Vilayer and Paypal only took about 10 minutes. According to the Paypal website it is used as a viable method to purchase online for many different countries, including Canada- so I would say you're good to go with it.

If you choose to go with Vilayer I am happy to help walk you through the set up- either here for everyone to see, or through PM on here which ever you want.-

If you do go with Vilayer you will want to download FileZilla http://www.downloadd...hp?kw=filezilla this is the easy way to upload the files for your server.

I know that you're looking for a referral, but if you wanted to try it on your own there is some pretty detailed info here:
