i prefer reave because top ranked its an aoe barrier/armour strip or aoe cc/dot/hot depending on protection. also, the long arse cd on barrier means its a set up skill, if your shields go down in mid combat so u gta pop it again that takes you outta the picture for quite a while. i prefer the more active role that reave gives me.

If anyone has tips for an insanity run with vanguard, I'd appreciate it. Especially with the final Horizon fight. The double scions/husks are getting to me.

How was Hardcore btw? I'm playing it on Insanity.

I found it charge-shotgun combo overpowered on insanity, could kill virtually every opponent with it solo without cover. Takes time to master but hey.

I really enjoyed Vanguard, but I often found myself trying to find ways to use my charge which is fine! :D

Charge/shotgun husks, take 1 scion with heavy weapon (I had barrier as bonus talent, so I spammed it while loading nuke), take the other with your pistol or if you have mastered charge with charge/shotgun spam.

Charge on Insanity serves no purpose. I haven't encountered a situation where I could do the same thing better and with less risk by using a different skill. The reward for using it isn't even good enough to warrant using it.

I have no idea how vanguards make it on insanity, I had a lot of trouble on some parts, and I was an Infiltrator.

I played it, its not as cheap as the Sentinel class but I get a lot less cocky playing vanguard funny enough.

Sentinel is invincible practically. But his shield is VERY cool looking. Vanguard is "fun". Not the most interesting class, but the charge move is a thrill and it works well against even tough enemies, so yea i like it. Also all the ammo options are nice.

I stand by my earlier statement when I said the class was worthless and it seems the game has proven me right.  However it would be nice to see what other people think about it.

I think you may have given in on it too early, up until level 15 (on Insane) I was waiting to half way through a battle to charge in now I charges as soon as I see an any hostiles.

The upgraded sheilds, health and weapon damage really makes a difference to this class.  That and the fact you only have to wait something like 5 seconds before you can charge again.  I picked barrier as my special skill but after lvl 17 I have not used it for the last 6 mission as charge is both my defence and offense.

Coupled with melee attacks charge is the best power in game and I save on ammo.

I have found several tactics that help me though, my team is so important, I use Tali a lot and her Drone takes some of the heat of me, I use the other character (depending on mission) to take down sheilds, armour etc and I charge around either making the kill or if I have a Biotics with me, I stripping down defences leaving Pull/throw/slam to finish off the enemy.

Where possible the first few charges should be on the fringes close to cover, using charge and backing off towards cover whilst shooting.  I do tend to use the tactical screen to redirect Shepard to point in the right direction with some of the more close call moments, I also find that I don't tend to finish enemies off, if I charge then a lot of the time I will redirect my firing towards another target, again leaving people with minor health for another charge or for a team mate to finish.  I always charge when it is avalable even if a target is 1 meter away as I said it is both defence and attack.

Don't know if any of this helps anyone, I played ME1 in a similar fashion, run up to the enemy and melee then ctargeting someone else whilst they got up then melee them ot the ground again, it is less systematic way of fighting (most people choose a target and finish that target then move on to the next not sure Vangaurd suits that).

Anyone else finding it a great class? have any useful tactics or tips?

Exactly my words. It takes a few levels to master charge, yet combined with the krogan shotgun + melee, multiple charges take out ANY enemies except pretorian but that is what your nukes are for. Vanguard is the easiest class I have played so far.

I did Vanguard for my second playthrough, and it wasn't bad. I can see how Charge would be difficult to use properly on harder difficulty levels, since enemies will do more damage (I'll admit it, I liked being nigh unkillable on high-level ME1 playthroughs).

Shockwave was pretty useful, though the one ability I really miss having from ME1 is Warp. I just felt like the Vanguard didn't have the same level of firepower it did in the first game. Yeah, the shotgun upgrades helped, but I didn't really like the Claymore; if you use it to Charge, and don't kill the enemy in your first shot (which is possible, as powerful as it is), you're screwed. And not having Carnage (especially when it seemed like enemies still did) hurt damage output as well.

Maybe it's different for others, but I always felt like the Vanguard was all about dealing out the hurt, and it felt seriously underwhelming in that area in ME2, especially compared to ME1.

I've found Mordin to be my best friend with a Vanguard. Incinerate for armored enemies, Cryo for clumped groups waiting to be shattered. He's also the only character that uses the Cryo-Cannon heavy gun (forgot the real name).

*edit:  I put shielded instead of armored.  Fixed.

Heh, this Thread is rather motivating... I've been having a helluva time on Insanity with Vanguard. I guess I just need to hide a bit longer before going nuts :).

maybe I was kinda crap player since I see alot of positive feedback, shockwave was really nice and usefull skill but I allways either charged myself to death since after charge getting shot from all possible directions or I charged myself to a buggy place and got stuck & died

I like Vanguard, but it really could use one tweak: Shotgun damage bonus

Or some bonus like the Tactical cloak.

Just how effective is Reave? I was thinking of going for Slam as I seem to be lacking a powerful single target damagew Biotic power.

Do you get much of a chance to use Reave, I find that I get into a fight I need to carry on using charge and never really get a chance to use any other power.

I am now playing a Soldier on Insanity and it is a lot easier than Vanguard on Hardcore so far.

Yes! I've posted on this before, but Adept and Soldier on Insanity seemed a lot easier and much less constantly frustrating than Vanguard on Hardcore. I was extremely disappointed going NewGame+ on Insanity with my Vanguard. Eventually quit and imported again and had much more fun with the other two classes. There were still hard parts on Insanity even with the adept, the platform ambush on the collector ship comes to mind....that part took a few retries. But at least the BloodPack and Horizon collectors weren't ripping me up.

I had a blast playing Vanguard on Veteran though, it was the most fun I've had playing a shooter. The times you'd just charge the battlefield and shotgun, take cover, charge again, and clear all the collectors out in a few seconds was AWESOME. It was exciting!

another reason to like vanguard is the fact that it is the only class that can make mince meat of scions. charge, melee and blast away with heavy pistol/shotgun while sidestepping and going backwards and charge again, rinse and repeat.

Yea on the lower difficulties it's probably kinda fun to play. It's just I warned people about playing on Insanity and I can see alot of people getting stuck and screwed with this class.

Yeah, that's how I feel. It's fun as hell for my Renegade, fits her personality, but on Insanity? No thanks. I'm currently doing a Sentinel for my Insanity playthrough and I don't know how I would've survived the Praetorian battle without Tech Armor.

reave is what i used before charging in. being generous with reave and smg between all the enemies then going in with charge shotgun, and charging from one to the next worked well very well for me, tried with barrier for a while but didnt really enjoy it. heard good things about vanguard with warp ammo, but again haven't tried it, but those three seem to be the only worthwhile bonus talents for vanguards.

as far as slam goes, i dont really see the point. it'll only work well on unprotected enemies, reave does the most damage of an ability in game, as well as its myriad of other effects. also, single target damage?? charge-melee-shotgun, problem solved :D

My first playthrough, and i'm on insanity.

The characters seem to be truly represented by their 'insane' difficulty characteristics. Armour, for the heavily armoured. Shield, for the skilled biotics, and both, for the heavily armored, skilled biotics.

It comes off as more 'true' than say, the simplicity of the normal difficulty; health, health, and well, mostly health, despite class. No fun at all. Not much thought needs to be put into it.

I wouldn't play it any other way. :)

I am going to retrain and get either Warp ammo or Reave not sure which yet, Barrior is a waste as I hardly ever use it now that I can practically chain charges together.  My health seems to be holding out when not under charge sheild upgrade.

Does Reave rip up both armour and shields?

I do have to admit I'm sorely tempted to take it if it removes my dependance on team mates to deal with shields and armour.
