I stand by my earlier statement when I said the class was worthless and it seems the game has proven me right.  However it would be nice to see what other people think about it.

Well MAYBE it's just the class that is not "cheap".

But anyways. I haven't really tried any other classes yet, but I had a lot of fun with the Vanguard.  I think the only problem is that the shotgun is not as awesome as it was in ME1.

I got assault rifle proficiency when I had the chance. I have a feeling it was a very good idea. I suddenly stopped dying as much at that moment.

I think the Vanguard just goes against Bioware's new all-encompassing "no cover = Rape Time" mechanic. That's why it is a difficult class.

How do you use Charge to get away from enemies? Few people say they charge away to regenerate health/shields. Is there a way to charge to a spot that doesn't have an enemy? or can you only charge towards enemies?

Just charge to a lone loki mech or something. Preferably one that has taken damage. You handcannon can help with that.

I beat my first playthrough as a soldier on insanity.

Now, I'm trying the same but with a Vanguard... and WTF, Biotic Charge should me renamed SUICIDE charge, because if you charge when there's more than two enemies around you die... Anyway, the only moments I can charge is when the fight is almost over... pointless skill.

Might be fun on lower difficults tough, with weaker enemies.

I love reave for my vanguard. It's almost as good as warp for taking down barriers and armor, but cools down a lot faster. I can do 2 of them in the time it takes Miranda to do 1 warp. My default group is me, Miranda and either Samara or Mordin. I find Samara more versatile since reave works on barriers, armor and health. For multiple enemies I assign one group member to wear down one enemy then blast them with shockwave and kill them while they're one the ground. It's even better when there's a ledge nearby. Reave also helps by softening up krogans for my charge. And I almost forgot one of the best things about reave. There is a good chance that it will incapacitate the enemy for a few seconds i.e. knock them to their knees or "taze them".

Reave only deals with barriers, armor, and health, not shields, but I feel all the advantages more than make up for this weakness.

You sir have changed my mind. Reave it is.

Shields I can deal with, thanks to my Tempest. Having something that can soften opponents up would be most agreeable.

I love the Vanguard so far, though I haven't played far in with it - but the main thing is that charge has to be used smartly or else you'll just be reloading alot xD I've had to learn that the hard way but man it's so satisfying when you charge just right!

Eh, Vanguard's just harder to play than it was in ME1. Which is a good thing really, but like has been mentioned above, Bioware wants you hiding behind stuff... vanguards give bioware the finger and rush in... there are penalties for defying the developers.

as far as slam goes, i dont really see the point. it'll only work well on unprotected enemies, reave does the most damage of an ability in game, as well as its myriad of other effects. also, single target damage?? charge-melee-shotgun, problem solved :D

Reave is VERY powerful against armor and it recharges very quickly. It was my adepts extra ability. Amazing to have a singularity going while reaving the poor suckers trapped in its vortex.

Does Reave rip up both armour and shields?

I do have to admit I'm sorely tempted to take it if it removes my dependance on team mates to deal with shields and armour.

After having finished the game with a Soldier first as well, that is pretty much what I anticipated a Vanguard to play like.  Went Sentinel for my second Shep instead.

... Which is why you don't Charge into the open when there are more than two enemies around.

Everyone seems to think that Vanguards are meant to charge around like headless chickens with rocket engines shoved up their asses, likely due to the preview video from before the game was out where we're shown several five-second clips of random charges in rapid succession. They're not.

Charge is meant to bring the Vanguard to bear on isolated enemies or small groups of enemies where their unrivaled close-range, single-target killing power is king, not to make you forget about the cover mechanics and spam it like a berserker.

Ironically, me and my friend correctly predicted folks WOULD Charge around like fiends on crack and get themselves killed.

So...is the Sentinel's Tech Armor really /that/ good?

anyone who played soldier first will find the difficulty raises considerably. a soldier has no real need to ever leave cover, and has ammo skills to deal with all types of protection, and has access to all weapon classes, enabling maximum damage to be caused at close, medium and long range. while the ability to wipe out anything with little effort is fun, it doesn't, imo, compare to the satisfaction of picking one of the power based classes, learning to play it well, and then proceeding to kick some serious arse with it :D

What is the best shotgun for the vanguard? Can you use that Krogan shotgun that research says only krogans can use?

Do most people here even use the shotgun or other weapon when playing the vanguard?

Vanguard is by far the most entertaining class in ME2 i've played every one of them on Hardcore and, yes it is not the easiest but it makes you use your team alot more and i find that rewarding

It makes you take chances and be more a tactician, Ive never played on insanity though...

While playing the soldier i could pretty much handle everything myself but that was kind of boring imo... Adepts just die a lot and i found that frustrating... my xtra gun was the sniper and my xtra power was slam or grunts power (cant remember the name).

sentinel tech armour is madly good. when you start getting all the shield upgrades and use armour that boosts shields and have top tech armour and the passive skill, you are nearly invulnerable. the only problem i found is that damage is lacking, and the only way to decently improve it was to pick up warp ammo.

yes, vanguards can pick up the krogan cannon on the collector ship, but its worthwhile getting AR skill, giving vanguards more teeth at range, enabling you to soften them up easier before going mad on them with the shotgun/charge.

Sentinel Tech armor makes insanity like Veteran for any other class. and the class skills for the Sentinel just line up perfectly. (IE Alot less "fluff" than other classes).

But doesn't that krogan shotgun only have one round in the chamber? So you have to reload after every shot? I read on some FAQS about weapons.
How good is that krogan shotgun?

The Krogan Shotgun makes large holes in everything it points at. the 1 shot clip isn't a reload problem, but an ammo problem... it reloads quick enough to fire along at a reasonable rate, the sucky part is you only get 1 shot per clip pick up ><

Yeah Ive played through it three times now and the vanguard is my favorite. To me its the perfect balance of being able to use guns and biotics. Instead of getting the heavy shotgun i went with assault rifle training becuase I have the collectors gun and the geth pulse rifle plus the like the 2nd shotgun cuz of the fire rate. I beat it on insane with my vanguard, I picked up fortification and I was able to charge in and shotgun them to death. It was awsome.

I'm going to try vanguard after sentinel playthrough on hard. Not sure whether I can play on insane as vanguard from the beginning (not importing character).

When you upgrade Charge, I assume heavy charge would be better, since I don't think you want to charge into more than two enemies. Or is area charge better?

Sentinels attack armor is too good. You are almost invincible with upgrades. You can constantly regen extra shields at the press of a button. Awesome looking. Pretty much a defensive class. Too over powered imo.

vanguard was great for veteran, wouldn't ever think of playing it on insanity. charge was awesome except that it put your shotgun off to the side when you reached your target.

After I'm done with my current Infiltrator Insanity run , I'm going to try Vanguard on Insanity. Should be interesting.
