So I just finished the game wanting to get the destroy ending.  Next thing I know, the synthesis ending was chosen and I watched the entire cut scene and have to redo the entire mission. Thanks bio ware. How the hell do I choose what ending I want? I literally never even had an option to choose the ending, it just chose it for me.

When you get control of Shepard again, you can go three ways - the huge green energy beam in the middle is synthesis, red pipes to the right is destroy, blue machinery to the left is control, and putting a bullet in the head of the kid is refusal.

You are saying you did not even get the chance to walk up to one of these options after the talk with the kid?

That's one of the problems when choosing which ending you want. If Shepard gets too close, a cutscene takes place. I've read posts by people saying they walked forward  and then it shows Shepard  running and then jumping into the beam

Anyways. Destroy is up the ramp on the right. Control is up the ramp on the left and as you found out, synthesis is in the middle

It never occurred to me--- what happens if you get to this point and you're color-blind? Are the colors a necessary cue?

When the catalyst talks about the endings, the camera shows the corresponding component when he talks about a particular one.

Holy hell, I'd be so mad. Anyway, carefully follow the path in front of you and watch your right-hand side. You should very soon come across a place where you can turn right. It'll lead you to the red tube. Approach it. Shooting it will only work when you get close enough to get stuck with the option. (You literally get stuck in place once you are in the appropriate place.)

This is technically your fault. To even get the Synthesis ending, you have to keep walking far enough on the path ahead. You have to get pretty far, but there is no point where it will force Shepard to walk forward like Control and Destroy, because at that point, you wouldn't have enough time to turn back. If you choose to turn back at the last second, you will receive a Critical Mission Failure for wasting too much time. When the cutscene with the Catalyst ends, choose the right path that leads to the redish-orange terminal. Once you get within a certain distance of the terminal, Shepard will auto-walk to a certain point where you must shoot the terminal. The game doesn't force an ending on you.

I don't think so. I think that even pre-EC they show you the vision of Anderson shooting the tubes, TIM grabbing the rods, etc.

Sort of, but you can see the actual devices corresponding to the different visions of TIM and Anderson interacting with them up the ramps.

looks like the design issue here is that they didn't anticipate players woukd want to inspect the components before acting.

This may help.

1.  don't walk towards the light.

2.  dont touch unguarded electrical appliances.

the other choice is the right choice  :D

I would like Bioware to explain why Shepard couldn't of shot the tube from a distance.

You wouldn´t know them and there is no time to explain. ;)

No idea, just because Shep has to die or so. Not that it matters, considering that there is a huge explosion right in the middle of the Citadel, engulfing the whole ring. Not that anyone present should care about you taking your time, calling a shuttle to the butt end of the Citadel, leave and snipe it from a distance.

Or have the shuttle fire at the tube

Or they did anticipate it and there's a point to it.

If they ever made a Mass Effect movie, they should use the OP's experience as a basis for the final scene. Shepard is coming out of the Catalyst conversation completely confused and goes like "Huh? What? Ok, I guess I'll go for destroy." Then he tries to figure out where to go but in his confusion he stumbles into the synthesis beam by accident, unwittingly changing the entire galaxy to become green. The End.

It would be oh so appropriate. :D

Yeah, this is what I did. "Why am I walking so slow? I just want to get close enough to inspect the thing because I dunno what that hologram was saying. Oh, what's happening now? ... I guess I just destroyed the galaxy. I'm going to bed." Of course there was also crying. I can't be expected to listen to instructions when it's 3am and I've been crying off and on for hours, right?

That's something I've noticed a lot of us have in common. We finish the game at unholy times in the morning, go WTF, then go to bed.

OK, were you guys watching me when I played the game and now you're just making fun of me?
