Is there a way to stop followers acting all crazy when I'm trying to talk to an NPC?

Often when I'm trying to have a conversation with an NPC about serious and world-shattering matters, my followers ruin it by springing about like a troupe of dyspraxic acrobats. They climb on and off tables and chairs, bump into each other (and me) and even do weird little dances on the spot.

I feel that this detracts from the dignity of my heroic endeavours. Is there a way to make them just stand still?

Stop short, order them to hold position, and then walk forward and talk to the character.

It's not always possible, but it's the only real way to keep the monkeys still.

By some unwritten rule of the universe, if there's a ledge, my companions will surely knock me off that ledge into a lava pit 100% of the time.

There's nothing that can be done about it. It's like Krem and sitting on chairs, it's not meant to happen.

omg...that bothers the **** out of me every time! And then eventually he disappears. I assume he's forgotten how to even stand on the ground without falling into the sky.
