Schroedingering protagonists in a long-running franchise is a bad idea: sooner or later, they'll have the prune the story branches, and that means killing the HoF for good and having Hawke either surviving the Fade or dying after Weishaupt.
In two words or less? #^@& that.
Seriously, I don't understand why they would feel the need to get rid of their previous player characters, when there are still plenty more great stories they can tell with them. I wouldn't mind if they just left Hawke and the Warden doing their own thing outside of the context of a specific game, because then, at the very least, they could always pull them out as needed. It's kinda like the Marvel Universe in a way: there's always a stable of B- or C-list characters they can employ for a story or two, or bring back into focus, so why kill off people and thus reduce the storytelling potential if they don't have to? If they're not using a character, then fine, they're not using them. It's just very shortsighted to kill them off out of spite.
