So, I accidentally and absent mindedley did the Wrex-Tali mission first in Chora's Den. I thought I would be able to do Garrus mission after. Unfortunately I was only able to recruit him, not do his mission. Did I miss anything too important or is the shootout in the med bay just an extended intro for him. Is there anything in the future that I won't be able to do because I missed it. Any future character dialogue? I really wish Bioware had made this clearer.
Accidentally skipped Garrus' mission.

There are no problems picking up Garrus at the elevator instead. You can still do Dr. Michel's mission.

Ok, thanks. I vaguely remember when I first played this game, like five or six years ago, that there was some sort of shootout in the med bay when you go to Garrus first. You mean there is nothing significant there, right? Just a cool shootout (that I don't mind missing if there was nothing of significance)?

Dr. Michel gives a better exposition of why the Quarian is important (she was looking to give info to the Shadow Broker in exchange for protection, information related to the Geth) than you get when you just get Wrex. But other than the exposition dump from Dr. Michel that you missed there are no other changes.
