I agree with the OP. This time the LIs were not particularly appealing to me and I ended up romancing Josephine with my Qunari Inquisitor. I was disappointed with Josephine's romance and I recently created another Inquisitor (human male) and chose Cassandra this time. So far to me this romance isn't that engaging and I have no zeal to continue it. I also hope in the next game the options for a straight males are more intriguing to me.
Obviously some persons were ok with them and obviously that is ok, I speak for myself and my preferences. I don't understand why it's so difficult for some people to accept that yes others can have different preferences and yes they can be disappointed that a certain aspect of the game was not enjoyable to them. I still love the game it's just in this one to me the LI's weren't that engaging.
I also tried using a female inquisitor and it just didn't click for me, the same thing happened when I tried to play as a female Shepard actually. I wasn't as engrossed as I was with a male character. I guess it's because I project some aspects of myself to my characters and well I don't view myself as a woman so it's hard for me to connect in that way.
What I find amazing is just how far the current view in society, should a straight male voice dislike about something he's entitled/ whining/ oblivious to his privilege has spread, it's nauseating at this point. I never and will never understand the mindset that "You had this before and other people didn't. Because it "changed" for you now suck it up." How does that line of thinking improve anything? I'm more interested in trying to get everyone to the same level. I do not believe I have or should make someone hurt like I did to understand me, or that it's some twisted form of justice. I have this crazy notion where I want everyone to feel comfortable and welcome.
I remember about a year ago when the LIs were confirmed I posted my disappointment regarding the options available for straight males. (Vivienne for me was the LI I was looking forward to) A Bioware employee Allan I believe replied in the thread to this effect. (Paraphrasing here) "Generally [In gaming] straight males always had more options, so if he were to choose a group to give less options to it would be straight males, because of past trends" Now mind you he did not say this was the thought process of Bioware (I hope not) but it is telling. I have issues with this line of thinking, but one of the first things that came to mind were why does what other developers do matter? Shouldn't you just focus on giving everyone the same content (as much as possible) and stop trying to or thinking about trying to punish a particular group?
What is sad is that with the ongoing societal norm that straight males are the most entitled bunch in history and such should not voice their opinions (seen as complaining) about anything we can see this line of thinking pop up more frequently. And who knows ultimately this could affect the development process! If they decide to cut an extra LI they might opt for the straight male since hey, they had more in the past! (Not considering that most of the sales probably come from straight males and logic would suggest you cater to your main audience but that's another point).
In DA:I straight females had the most options available I think it was around 6. I remember there was an explanation that with the delay they had extra time to add another romance so they added Solas for females. I still think that Vivienne should have been an option as it would have been a fantastic opportunity to have a totally different type of relationship and would have been a remarkable arc. It could have opened up after her Wyvern heart quest and show more of the side of Vivienne revealed through conversations with Cole and Iron Bull. Missed opportunity imo.
