I'm a hard core mage. 90% of the time I will always choose to wield magic if it's an option in the game. DA is no different...

Dragon Age: Origins is still by far one of my favourite games, but I often fins it a little easy, so usually use a mod to increase the difficulty of nightmare.

DA2 I find so much harder! I know from reading various articles on the web that Bioware made the game "easier" than corresponding difficulty levels in Origins but I am finding nightmare near enough impossible, and even 'hard' is too tough at times.

I'm used to setting up tactics/party etc from my 50+ playthroughs of DAO, so I don't think it's anything to do with that. I just don't understand why I keep dying!

I've never successfully completed an entire playthrough of DA2, I find the storyline a little fleeting so tend to lose interest, but this time I am determined to finish!

You're not the only one.  I have a friend who finds DA2 to be much harder than DA:O.

As for me, I only really have issues when I play as a warrior.  When I play as a rogue through hard (don't play nightmare because I don't like friendly fire), I usually don't have any issues, but when I play as a warrior, I end up struggling through fights I used to clear easily when playing as a rogue.

Haven't brought a mage through hard yet, though, but I think I started a playthrough on hard with a mage a while back.  Should try getting back to that playthrough....

I refuse to drop down any further than 'Hard' - I think it may have to do with the armour set-up for companions, I suppose I'm used to putting the best armour I have on them whereas DA2 you're restricted.

Update: Something strange has happened - I'm now finding 'Hard' a little too easy  <_<. The Highwaymen/Raiders or whatever they're called around Kirkwall at night always gave me grief but this playthrough I've not had one death in my party. And I've still got the same set up as I always do:

Hawke - Offensive mage

Anders - Supporter/Debilitator/Healer

Aveline - Tank

Carver - Damage

I've gone through hard with Fenris as my tank, Anders as my healer, and Isabela as my melee DPS while my Hawke was ranged DPS.  Didn't have any issues with anything other than the high dragon in Act III and the Arcane Horror in MotA.

I think your issue might be that you don't have a rogue to deal single-target DPS.  With how fast rogues chew through enemies, even on hard (no idea about nightmare), by the time they kill an enemy, they're already halfway through killing another.  And that's just dual-wield rogues.  Archer rogues are incredibly powerful, if built right.  Neither mages nor warriors can keep up with the amount of damage rogues can put out at the speed they deal it.

Runes can also help a lot.  I usually equip defense and armor runes on my rogues and mages while giving my warriors armor and elemental defense runes (everyone also gets a spirit resistance rune).

Also, is your build different from normal?  Have you changed anything up for the way you've built Aveline, Carver, and Anders as well?  Any new equipment?

In DA2, I play on Hard; dislike the various Immunities, nerfing the PC, and buffing the opponents on NM.

Recommend taking a staff for each element; will help with specific vulnerabilities on foes, as well as evading resistances.

In DAO my party always had a dual-wield rogue instead of 2H warrior but I've yet to find one in this game (I've only been playing for about an hour)

I found some upgraded armour for Aveline and Carver, And I've been buying the best weapons & accessories to equip too.

Gameplay is different than DAO, so I suppose I have to (almost) treat it like an entirely new game.

Remember Isabela from DA:O?  She's a companion in DA2, and her look was completely revamped.  Check the Hanged Man occasionally and eventually you'll find her.

The Duellist in The Pearl.

What is it with her and drinking establishments... I think she may have a drinking problem.

And yes, just fought a Desire Demon and her lackeys in a place called Dark Foundry - that was a difficult fight.

The Pearl was a brothel, not a tavern.

As for why she drinks.... well, she's essentially a pirate.   :P  At least she doesn't drink as much as Oghren.

Don't be a pedant. There was a bar, they served drinks.

A pirate? That really wasn't evident in DAO. I'll search her out now. ARrrrgh!

Strip clubs serve drinks too, but that doesn't mean that's all they provide.   ;)

It's way more obvious in DA2, though there are some hints towards it in DA:O.  Just pay attention to how she (mis)behaves.   :P

Even I can play on Hard in DA2 and I'm pretty bad.  Maybe I'm remembering wrong.   You want to go all offence in DA2.  Oh well can't remember. :)  You should be able to do fine with all sorts of different parties.  Did you get some elf root for elf root potions or are you up to there yet? I think it's up the wounded coast.  Anyway that will solve some of your health potion problems.  Was that any help?  Do you have the Black Emporium?  I remember I wanted to buy up health potions from somewhere but I don't remember where.  Health potions drop off bodies but there are more on easier settings.

I too find DA2 far more difficult. In DAO once you get  manacleanse, everything is joke.DA2 nightmare is retarded because of friendly fire. Fenriis would one shot every one in the team. Your mage cannot cast AOE and would be one shot by the assassins and hunters. Annoying Anders is (more or less) indispensable while Isabela would lie dead, mostly killed in friendly fire.

And the enemy spawning in waves. You have position Varric and Anders far while Aveline taking the pounding. Perfect strategy. But hey .. look the next spawn dropped on top of Varric and Anders and they are dead in a blink of an eye.

Yes, some encounters had me tearing my hair out. The 'another wave of mooks'-style combat was infuriating as much as difficult, which didn't help at all.

But the thing to remember is that in DA2, damage is King. An all-offensive party beats a tank-healer-DPS setup, and range is pretty much always better than melee (though an Assassin Rogue Hawke certainly is a machine).

I believe the best party is Merrill, Anders and Varric no matter who your Hawke is.

Isabella:  gets all the best rings and amulets especially + 1 to all attributes.  Defense is crucial for survival so go for high cunning, at level 10 & 11 take ‘experienced hands’ and ‘sea legs’ for huge bonuses to attack, damage, defense.   Also romance her for +5% speed bonus + 5% to hawk.   Obviously take Dual Weapons (not lacerate), Swashbuckler (not savvy,  not across the bow), and blindside before any other talents. I usually take control of Isabella in the big fights, target enemies about to die (1 hit) , protect mages, gang up on elites.

Friendly fire:  Easy to avoid,  don’t use fire or ice (except winters grasp) on auto.  And don’t use Fenris or Carver on auto.

CCC:  essential for NM.  Lightening tree is very powerful,  chain reaction on stagger is deadly, use Aveline to stagger enemies (2 ways to do it).  And always complete 2nd power on any talent or spell  for maximum effective use of your stamina or mana.

Immunities:  look them up on the forum.  You’ll need to hold several staffs and swap out when needed.  Remember the more powerful the staff or weapon, the more powerful are all your spells and talents.

Autopilot:   Setting these up to work effectively is covered elsewhere (big topic) but here’s a useful tip rarely mentioned,  some spells require a sustain before you can cast them but on auto this is not required, i.e. Merrill can cast ‘Wounds of the Past’ without having ‘Blood of the first’ active, and your healing mage can group heal and revive without having Panacea active (simplifies things a lot!!!).

General:  Unless you’re boxed in, always hold a good way back after the enemies are triggered and stay back,  ‘hold’ your team in place, select ‘all’  and move them all back.   In that way you can see what’s coming and plan an effective response  (which for me is often Aveline sent to engage, Isabella picks off any that get past and the mages lay down a blitzkrieg of lightening, fists and spirit.

Two easy fixes for 2Handers murdering the party:

1) skip Giant's Reach, fire away with Mighty Blow

2) skip 2h dmg talents, go for activated buffs (Rally, Assail, Cleave)
