Humans, apparently. For some reason Bioware didn't think it would be lame to simply oversize bosses. I don't get this particular decision.

They're bigger than the qunari pcs.
It's incredibly immersion breaking to have humans double your size walking around.
I picked that race to be the biggest bully on the playground. Such disappoint.

Oh I agree 100%.
You have no idea how much I agree with this.
I found this so far beyond annoying playing as a qunari.
I still can't understand, why Sky Watcher (Avvar guy from the swamp area you can recruit) is literally twice as big as a human.
I mean, Avvars are just humans. What the hell.

Umm...
And the Avvar are known for being big.
They're just big humans. Believe it or not, big humans are a thing.
Theoretically, I assume a human inquisitor is supposed to be average human size, which is < 6 feet tall... Around 5'9 ish? So a realistic comparison for average sized Qunari would I guess be around the size of Dwayne Johnson(the Rock) ~6'4 - 6'6 ?

Assuming that brutes are just rare freaks of nature, which I think is the intent, there are still plenty of HUGE athletic freak of nature humans, like the Big Show(see above) or Shaquille O'Neal, the guy who plays The Mountain(Gregor Clegane) on Game of Thrones, etc... They are all considered "giant" by our realistic standards.
The Rock makes the average person look puny, but Shaq not even standing up straight makes the Rock look like a child
Then you factor in that this is a fantasy world, so they could possibly be some sort of hybrid giant/mutant/etc...
We get pretty big hoo-mans in RL without the presence of magic.
My bet? The Tevinters experiment a lot with eugenics, and the bigger dudes you see in Dragon Age are the result of them trying to breed bigger, tougher dudes.
People like the Skywatcher just seem like really tall humans to me. People like the Hakkonite Champion that you fight at Razikale's Reach are ridiculous.
Umm...
And the Avvar are known for being big.
Conversion to an agricultural diet from hunter/gatherer actually knocked about 6 inches off the average human height. So "barbarians" historically WERE bigger than "civilized" humans, weirdly enough. Not necessarily THAT much bigger, but some of them may not be pure human.

In the Hakkonite Champion's case, that's when I just write it off as being an a fantasy world. Maybe he's like that Hagrid guy from Harry Potter and half-giant or something. lol
Not all of them can be choked up to big humans. Sometimes a boss or mage will just be massive for no other reason than being a boss, like Sister Costeau in the Emerald Graves. And it's stupid.

I never said it was common to be that big as those boss characters. I'm saying they exist.

Why can't a person, woman or mages, not be really tall?

I'm not disbelieving you at all, but hasn't the average height of humans also gone up in the last couple of centuries?

I wasn't trying to say a mage or woman couldn't be tall (I'm pretty tall myself), just that if you look at the models in the game, they don't look like tall, well-built people. They look like someone stretched their dimensions in Paint. More importantly, they're simply too big to be believable, almost as big as Envy. I should have taken screenshots.
Bad Game Design.
The leader of the Blades of Hessarian is half a head taller than my qunari and he's standing in a hole.
I understand that there's a lot of diversity in nature, and that humans, being the most populous race in Thedas, probably have a far wider range of heights and weights than all of the other races by virtue of their greater genetic diversity... but why are they always boss fights? You'd think you'd walk by some gigantic guard on the battlements saying "Sergeant's got me scrubbing pots again for being out of uniform. It isn't my fault they don't make boots in my size."

1. I have to check the proportion issues. Even then, Not even the qunari or even Dwarves are proportional.
2. I would not say they are too big to be believable. They are around the same hight as a qunari male. That's very possible. The only thing humanoid in size that unbelievable are the size of the new Qunari Saarabass.
They all have freakishly large heads and wide bodies. There is a difference between being tall, and just scaling up the model. This is the latter case.
That rogue in the emerald graves and the Hesserian leader are fantastic examples of this. You'll notice that even though Rock and Markie mark have a difference in height, the Rock's head isn't enormous compared to Mark's. Also the Rock isn't 3 feet taller than Mark.
None of these units are porportioned like humans. They're all 3 feet taller with extremely bulky frames and massive heads. It's ridiculous. They're also taller than the qunari male model. Use stealth, and walk up to one.
It isn't natural and it's not believable. It's a very obvious "THIS IS A ELITE" maneuver, not a common height differential around thedas.
Also apparently you want us to believe that this is common. Because these factions can field these massive humans like no tommorrow. I'm all for suspending disbelief, but this is a slap to the face.

'eh... I just chalk it up to "possibly magic" and "not Earth".
