Will there be AI/geth in Andromeda? Will bioware want to reintroduce another organic vs. synthetic subplot? I'm not so sure.

That said; it could be his usual sadistic humour, but I believe Sir Ridley Scott may be exploring this very scenario in the second installment of Prometheus. The dilemma is that the AI is using its soothing voice, politesse and attractiveness, things it was programmed to do, to beguile the protagonist.

To quote the director:

“You can’t have a person go off into the galaxy and have a person who’s still got his head off [the AI]. Once that head goes back on, he’s really dangerous, but he’s also very seductive. So maybe he’ll persuade her to help him put the head back.”

From the actors:

If bioware wants to include an AI romance for our protagonist, in which the AI is simply using the romantic connection to some end, then yes, I would not be against it.

But please no... no falling in love and be together forever, or I want to learn to be more human like you.

But AI's in Andromeda are probably not based on Ezo so you don't know how smart they can be, and ED-E was created only 20yrs after the first human AI was made, so I'm sure they could get a lot smarter, just add another 200yrs of research.

I don't think smartness is issue here. Geth and EDI are both arguably smarter than humans.

You know, I've always noticed that fiction has this really sideways view of what AI's are capable of. It's often stated that they're emotionless, but we never raise an eyebrow about them experiencing emotions like anger, hatred, or fear. But when they start displaying positive emotions, everyone questions it.

But the way I see it, if you can get angry, you can get happy. If you can hate something, you can love something. If you can fear something, you can desire something.

All emotions are to us are a chemical reaction in our brain in response to certain stimuli; I don't see why an AI couldn't have those same, or at least similar responses to similar stimuli; they wouldn't be based on the same organic chemical reaction, but that doesn't make it impossible.

AI in ME have been established to be capable of anger and fear, but also capable of loyalty, humor, compassion, consideration, and curiosity. They can become sentimental, they can value the lives of others above their own. To me, this shows, at the very least, a capacity for romantic intimacy.

Sexual desire is a little trickier, because they wouldn't have a need for sex to reproduce so they don't have that same drive to it, but EDI at least shows some curiosity on the subject. If nothing else, if we were to accept that an AI could develop feelings of romantic intimacy regarding an organic, it might be possible or even likely that they would want to satisfy their romantic partner just out of the selfless desire to see them happy. Though I suppose that could be construed as onesided.

It's shown that EDI and Geth have some kind of emotions, Geth less than EDI though. I'd say there was some kind of attachment from EDI towards Shepard and Joker and from Legion towards Shepard, but I didn't see any kind of romantic or sexual feels from them towards anyone in the game. EDI was curious, but seemed incapable of feeling the emotions herself, she tried to simply imitate human behaviour with Joker. Imitating doesn't equal to me actually feeling emotions necessary for relationship.

EDI was curious, but seemed incapable of feeling the emotions herself, she tried to simply imitate human behaviour with Joker. Imitating doesn't equal to me actually feeling emotions necessary for relationship.

I definitely saw glimpses of real emotion from EDI and, eventually, from Legion. Over the course of the Rannoch arc, Legion feels shame, urgency, desperation. EDI feels annoyance at Joker for speaking about her as if she isn't there right after she gets the new body, and during the Citadel DLC when Brooks and CloneShep are taking the Normandy, she feels outrage. And when Legion dies, she mourns him, albeit quietly. These aren't simulated, they're genuine.

So if they can feel these emotions, why not others? I get why sexual desire is potentially off the table - ignoring for a moment that it's debatable that qualifies as an "emotion" anymore than, say, hunger does, I also explained why that isn't necessarily a hindrance; they may not have the urge, but they wouldn't necessarily be put off by it, either. But romantic attachment is about more than simply facilitating sexual procreation; it's another way of bonding, strengthening ties with others and building a society and strengthening the whole. I don't see a reason why an AI should be incapable of that.

They feel these emotions differently than we do, which makes sense because it's a different process for them than it is for us. But they still have them. So, I disagree in that I do think EDI had romantic feelings for Joker; the whole arc played out as someone who has feelings for someone else, knows that person has feelings for them, and is mildly frustrated that they aren't acting on those feelings, but doesn't really know how to act on it themselves. I saw it as more than a simple curiosity; she wanted there to be a relationship. She's more clinical about it, but it's there.

I love the idea of romance between humans and AI. You've got a great potential conflict built right in.

But please no... no falling in love and be together forever...

Uh-huh. Right. Now, is this just for AI, or for romance in general?

As an aspiring cyborg, I fully endorse romantic relationships with machines. Indeed, I'm quite close to my toaster.

why do people always use "toaster" as an example

what about your computer or your laptop? i would be more open to a relationship with my laptop, we've been through so many hardships together and she always pulls through when i need her

Its a joke as old as time, my friend.

Though on the subject of 'Personal Attachments to Inanimate Objects', generally speaking the top three end up being 'The Vehicle (namely cars), The Tool(includes tools of defense and war), and The Ornament (Jewelry)'. Photographs don't really count for obvious reasons but those tend to be up there also.

Simple answer:

My response was to the thread's question, "Romancing an AI in Mass Effect: Andromeda?", thus I am only addressing AI romance.

I wouldn't expect an AI to feel emotions for the protagonist anymore than I would expect a salarian to feel or learn to feel sexual attraction toward the protagonist.

Simply, but: I don't think Als of Mass Effect have shown that they are capable of feeling that kind of love, that is required for romantic relationship in my opinion. Since you think that EDI did feel that kind of love towards Joker, well I guess we will just disagree on that ^^

Yeah, I suppose it is something that's open to interpretation. I clearly saw something with EDI and Joker that you didn't, and it could be that you're right and I'm seeing something that isn't there.

But here's something to consider; while we're talking about AI's in ME, really, not counting the Reapers, we've only encountered and delved into the character of two AI's; EDI and Legion. While that's all we have to go on, that isn't a large enough sample size to say that all AIs in this setting are going to be exactly like they are; there's room for variation. We really only have the vaguest idea what the geth are like post Reaper upgrade, they could end up showing quite a bit of individuality and diversity, and who knows what another custom built AI like EDI could be capable of.

I guess it's possible in the future and maybe with synthetic Andromeda species at least. We'll see.

How about a sizzling romance with a hot commando soldier. Then your LI gets hurt in battle, revealing the metallic endoskeleton... :P

If we're going to have a love-bot, could we have a masculine/'male' sexbot?

I, for one, think the EDI-Joker romance would have taken an impressive turn if EDI's chasis had been a male-infiltrator rather than 'ooh silver boobs!' From EDI's perspective, it would have been the same and/or irrelevant, still having the same interest with/in Joker... but for him?

Come on, people. Comedy. Gold.

Just imagine his sexual confusion. 'But it's a dude-bot! But dat butt. But it's EDI! And a very sexy voice and you know it. But she- he- it'll break me!'

[/kidding but not really]

On a more serious note-

I do think that 'female AI love interest' is just a tad overdone in its various flavors- whether the 'teaching a robot to love' always being a female robot, or a general 'physical incompatibility' issue that tends to focus around attractive female avatars.

I think you could get an interesting, if bit weird and alien, sort of utterly non-physical exclusive relationship story of sorts with an AI that isn't even remotely fuckable. Something like the ME2 Joker-EDI dynamic, but for the PC.

Of course, something like this might be amusing...

Hey, you knockin' my relationship?!! Don't you think it's a little presumptuous to imply that I should be closer to my computer instead? Didn't you consider that we just click? She's got that special something.

I always encouraged Joker and Edi.  As for my character, well I always liked Data.  Especially in his cowboy hat.

An AI can mimic every emotion range like a primo psychopath.  In the end its just 1 or 0, the point being illusion in the feeling range and only cold ratio decisions.

And you're just random cells, chemicals and neurons firing.

The question you should be asking is not why a human might be attracted to a computer with a "sexy robot body," but rather why an AI would ever be attracted to a human.
