If they do ever make it, at least we know the main character will look like Shepard.

I doubt that it has been scrapped, they're just taking it with small steps. It's their big "side" project, probably not their main focus, so they won't hesitate not to rush it along.

There has been news, however, of this: http://t.co/8TU6Kybe9m

Whether or not this is further hope of Mass Effect coming to the big screen eventually, I can't say for certain, although it gives me that extra glimmer of hope (wouldn't mind going to that 4D display, either, if it weren't on the other side of the world, unfortunately).

Whether or not this actually gets made may depend on the success of the Assassin's Creed movie.  Warcraft bombing already has the tide flowing against....

Just to chime in, I'd definitely like to see a Mass Effect movie, even based on the first game's plot with Shepard as the protagonist.  I don't care if he doesn't follow my particular Shepard's persona.  I just want more aspects of the original trilogy.

But, I hope they can throw some good talent behind it and lots of money.  It's time to bring video game movies out of the muck!

To be fair, Warcraft only bombed in the US. People here have a weird stigma against video game movies.

With good reason. They're pretty garbage on average.

I really think making a movie about the Shepard trilogy would be kind of an uninspired choice. We've done it before and I really doubt whoever's directing could do the trilogy better than Bioware. That and Shepard would be quite frankly, a boring character if we weren't controlling him.

On the other hand I'd love a movie based on the Mass Effect: Revelations novel. You'd get a little of everything, buddy cop action, world building etc.

Though this is likely all null and void because the signs point to the ship having sailed at this point.

Right. But Warcraft was by no means horrible. As a fan of the lore, I liked it. But some of the reviews were highly unfair. Like criticd went in with the intention of hating it. It was by no means horrible, and plenty of room for improvement. But I swear the critics had some personal vendetta against Blizzard, or Duncan Jones. Or at least that's what it seemed like considering some of the reviews I read seemed to attack the game it's based on for its addictive nature, instead of the film itself.

If someone with serious clout made it happen (JJ Abrams/James Cameron) I could see it being great.  In a movie setting I could set aside my various Sheps and accept whatever vision the writers and directors had in mind providing the writing/special effects were top notch.  The problem is it's likely to end up in the hands of a second rate director, writer(s), and actors with a restrictive budget.  I can already see the role of Liara played by a no name actress with a bad skull cap prosthesis.  And nobody wants to see Mass Effect reduced to a B level SciFy channel production.

I'll gladly watch a movie, but I think a miniseries would bea more appropriate, though perhaps, far less profitable medium for Mass Effect. I say this with every confidence that the Assassin's Creed film will finally usher in the golden age of videogame movies much like Blade did for comic book movies. Once that film becomes very successful, other game properties like Halo and Splinter Cell that have had long gestating film adaptations will be made priorities.

Already, The Division, Tomb Raider, and even peripherally video game related films like Ready Player One, are currently in development. I imagine this is because of how well the Assassin's Creed film must have screened. If, and more likely when (so long as these films do what Marvel does and avoids what DC does not: ie let genuine fans that are superbly competent make their films) one of the subsequent films to Assassin's Creed becomes a major blockbuster (probably Halo), then we will see a massive influx of video game adaptations much like the current crop of comic book films.

Unfortunately, Mass Effect will likely be amongst them. In a perfect word, Bioware would go to HBO in that new games to film friendly environment and make a miniseries or even a three season saga. But Mass Effects setting is far too ambitious in scope for television, I believe. So instead it will be made into a film. And because its story is really too nebulous for film, at best we'll get a brave and faithful but lacking effort like The Watchman film (or if we are really lucky something like Dredd) or at worst, a hollow shell of the source material like The Fantastic Four (all of them).

Regardless, I'll check it out when it happens, however it happens, and hope for the best.

A film like this, I see difficult to do. Everyone would want to see their Shepard, their romance and their choices on the big screen. Not someone elses. It would tick off more people than excite.

If a Mass Effect movie is ever made, they should go with an original story that has no connection to the games other than being set in the same universe. The Shepard trilogy wouldn't translate well to film, at least not without major cuts and changes that are sure to rankle fans of the games.

That said, this project is stuck in development hell and probably never getting out.

No, not everyone, only those "That movie ruined my childhood"-people.

The simple truth is everyone except those who actually chose to hate it for not being their Shepard will be able to see it like other movies where they do not choose.

If you can enjoy any movie or book where you can not choose what happens next the lack of choice in a mass effect movie won't prevent you from enjoying that movie.
