Stupid horrible organization the Grey Wardens are.
Let's recruit all the best people of the land, now lets make sure we don't tell them they could die horribly in the joining. Now lets watch as 2 out of 3 of our best people in the land die to drinking dark spawn blood, oh and as an aside they are going to be sterile and oh they are going to die young.
Dumb ass organization.
Where did the whole 'sterile' thing come in? The Warden in DA:O can have a child with Morrigan, and she even goes as far as suggesting using either Alistair or Loghain (if available). They may be diminished but not necessarily sterile. As for dying young, how long has the Hero of Ferelden lasted (if you sacrificed someone else or did the Ritual) and how old was Duncan at the time of his demise?
Only three fantasy-esque organizations are known for sterility that I know of: Witchers, Sorceresses (Witcher Universe) and a large number in the Game of Thrones (The Unsullied and the 'Spider') universe. If we delve further, we can add the science fiction Games Workshop Space Marines to the list of sterile parties as well.
As for the possibility of death on entry, if you got told would you have done it any other way? Also its a we tell you and you back down, we have to kill you to guard it thing so may as well do it after you know. We don't even know if Jory would have survived or not, all but one companion in DA:A survives it (Mhairi may you rest in pixel peace). You have all the wardens out of DA:A and DA:I and then some from the books as well that are still around, so the chance of death on entrance can't be that high.
Its a blessing and a curse to be a Warden. It saves the elven PC in DA:O and we even got to see what happens if he/she didn't go through with it. It's also far less restrictive to be a Mage Warden as per the books and Bethany in DA 2.
