Let me start by saying that I don't mind romance in ME.

However, they should not be the focus when it comes to relationships in the game, it should be friendships and maybe even rivalries.

Many have complained in previous ME games about interactions with some crew members being severely lacking when not romanced. This should not happen in ME:A, if "resources" are an issue then they should cut the romances (not completely) in favour of them.

Rivalries would also be nice to implement, as not all the crew are going to like a paragon protagonist. The only problem is that I don't know yet how I think they should be implemented. What do you guys think?

I haven't played DA:I but from what I saw they did have something like this your 'crew' would say different things and like you more or less depending on which decisions you made and what you said. Hopefully we can have something like this in ME:A, they can cut some romances there were a lot in the last game I think about 7 options for each gender.

I just think that romance is not as important as the platonic relationships you make with the crew. My favourite relationships in ME was Garrus, Grunt and Wrex as Shepard's best bros. I have no problem with romance, and only brought up resources because some people like to throw that around to shoot down ideas. I honestly don't care about resources, that's for the devs to figure out, and it shouldn't stop people from posting their ideas of what they want to see or improved in ME.

To be fair, I think Bioware is better at crafting friendship arcs than most rpg companies already. That said, I'm always enthusiastic about the prospect of deeper and more involved platonic relationships. A lot of my favorite Bioware characters have been friendship only companions.

In my opinion BW did really good job in ME. As an example I'll use Garrus and his special trip in Citadel and my paragon missing-on-purpose. That scene was textbook example of total awesomeness.

Yes! I also loved that you could give Tali a hug after finding her father.

Well, it's like instead of burning someone with flamer, you toss a Molotov at 'em from a safe distance.

If the person is below 18, then I do not mind a platonic relationship. If the person is above 18, then sex should be optional.

I plan on romancing someone every play-through, so keep the romance. As for sex, let it be a choice. Though, more than 85% of the time, I let my characters enjoy romance in the sheets with their significant other.

I thought Platonic Garrus was really well-done. I really felt the whole war-buddy thing.

You already have a platonic relationship with every follower except the one you are romancing.

My Shep had very close friendships with Joker, Liara, and Tali. I found those friendships very meaningful and well-written. My romance was with Kaidan, which was also pretty meaningful, since it stretched out for three games and was just the greatest slow burn ever.

Plus in Dragon Age, my Hawke had wonderful friendships with Aveline and Isabela; my inquisitor is incredibly close to Cassandra. Again, all wonderful and well-written platonic relationships.

So I guess OP is just asking to continue the trend....?

I don't really see a problem with romances, and cutting them out would be a step backwards. I found the non-romantic squadmates developed pretty well, maybe some better than others, but still awesomely on point. If they went even further here, that would be incredible.

I would like to see a system of rivalries in Andromeda, something maybe similar to the KOTOR games. Perhaps the player can eventually be faced with the decision with possibly getting at odds with a companion/squadmate that might make them leave the party and cause further difficulty down the road. Maybe even their death? This could also influence how your squad thinks of you. Having squadmates that favor either paragon or renegade tactics would be kinda interesting.

I'm a little conflicted.

In a way, it was great how in Mass Effect games you could do whatever the hell you wanted, even if your friends and intended LI didn't like it, and it didn't make a difference.

The only issue there is, in real life, unless you're a very reasonable, understanding, empathetic person, normally if you're at odds with somebody you will not be friends and less likely to date.

However, the thing that bothered me about the approval system in DA:I is if you had too much disapproval with their character you missed out on some content. You were unable to do their personal quest if you didn't gain enough approval. I have this issue with Solas; to this day I still haven't done the personal quest, and seeing as he plays a major role in the game, I missed out on a lot of stuff.

Friendship/rivalry system was fun, the only problem being is that you were not rewarded without maxing out either one of those two.

Personally, I wouldn't mind if it was done like ME2; regardless of whether you got along with companions or not, do their loyalty mission and they will follow you regardless of personal feelings.

Hm... I believe the main points for ME:A is:

Exploration, action, adventure, team bonding and finally LIs. That, I believe is the priority list that Bio is working on.  Quite frankly,  relationship issues is not the reason players will buy this game. Yes, there are players who  want sex, nudity, relationship this and relations ship that. However,  these are NOT central to the ME franchise and I doubt Bio will put much effort for little return.

Bio's current formula for creating ME games is an industry success story.  But, I ask this. How will improved relatioship mechanics sell more games? In other words,  what is the value to Bio?

Don't get me wrong, I also poo pooed the romance stories as currently written... well except the Dorian one in DAI, which for some reason more effort was put into it than the others. He certainly had more verbiage lines to speak.

But, at the end of the day, what sells?

Romance is in the top 3 options of every single Bioware game, and the top option for every Mass Effect game.  It is, arguably, their strongest selling point.

Well seeing how Citadel DLC is pretty much most liked DLC in the ME and considered must have.. relationships do sell and are content that people keep in high priority. Cause at least for me what is important in the BW game are 1) Story 2) Characters. Everything else is below those two.

Reminder that this is the best exchange between characters in Mass Effect 3 and no colliding private parts were involved:

Not to mention (although private parts were colliding, none of them were the player's and thus it counts.):

Completely disingenuous metric because the majority of those searches are people who romanced one character looking at the other options because they have not the slightest intention of playing the game again. You'll remember that BW published the completion metrics as well and the mass mass majority of people whom played the game played it once, and this became a larger and larger chunk of playerbase each iteration. It is not even kind of their highest selling point outside of BSN.

According to forum participation, female shepard should have a slight edge over male shep and there is a significant female presence on the forum as well further reinforcing the notion that both female players and female shepards are the majority. Meanwhile in actual population land, 80% of players picked custom male shep and were almost exclusively male and male players account for a huge chunk of female shep as well.

I'm not saying romance should either be abandoned or is a fluff throw away feature, but saying it's the reason de principal ME sells is absolutely wrong. It is, to use the bullshit I hear regularly coming out of the marketing department, "a core branding feature" and a "series staple trademark", but frankly more people know ME has snusnu and mushy stilted banter from Fox News than they do from the game itself.

Also ME3's MP franchise-saving numbers show where a huge vector for replay exists, and it isn't making kissy-faces at _______.

A  nice compromise on this idea would be to have a 'best friend' AND a 'love interest', each from your crew. How the preequisites for each 'role' would differ and whether it would be possible for just one person to be both role is a difficult question.
