remember when "what class I should pick" topics were more popular than romance topics in the Bioware fandom?

And to answer the class question: my Shep was all Soldier, all the time.

I don't like "chosen one" fantasies (or at least think they're overdone), so I prefer the idea of a regular soldier who just accomplishes great things through sheer grit and determination.  No space magic, just guns.  Lots of guns.

The culture pushed by the Bioware fandom is partly why I feel awkward when people ask me if I'm into RPGs

It must be really hard to be so susceptible to having your culture determined by the opinions of random strangers whom you've never met. I personally found self-actualization to be easier and more rewarding.

it is already starting to turn toxic and when the romance fanboys/girls enter here

If this is toxic by your standards, you'll want to add a layer of skin or two. Inevitably those who rage over romances (for whichever reason) will find their way to this thread and it sounds like you will want to be prepared.

Grit and determination are not mutually exclusive depending on your class of choice...

Almost the only thing of value ME gameplay has more than your average shooter is the existance of classes and a veriaty of interesting "powers".

On the other hand, sometimes the negative baggage surrounding the "culture" (honestly, a lot of so-called geek culture) can get tough to slog through. Gamergate just made me want to go to bed. The recent Hugo embarrassment as well.

If this is the conversation the OP is trying to raise though - then I broadly agree. It's frustrating to share an easily misrepresented hobby with a bunch of noisy, drooling cretins.

At launch most topics do revolve around classes, powers, missions etc. there is usually one mega thread of romance with like 5 people in it doing the majority of posting and somehow reaching 250 pages. After the game is out for a while threads devolve or evolve depending on perspective into mutant goat love or whatever the unavailable character who should be available threads. I suspect mainly to troll you.

And adept.

There is a simpe Reason, why Romance Topics are far more hotly discussed than other Topics on this Forum and similar Forums.

Romance is a Topic that is dependent on Emotion, which naturally lends itself better to open and longer longer Discussion, especially as there are far less "hard facts" to find in these Discussions, which revolve far more around Opinions.

Most other Things to be discussed on these Forums, have a far greater Potential for Objectivity and thus a far lower Life Expectancy than those Threads, as Questions can be answered and undeniable Facts can be brought to the Forefront.

Or, to put it shortly:

Threads based on Emotion and Opinion are naturally more frequented and longer lasting than Threads based on Logic and Facts.

There's nothing to really talk about in terms of game play, until they show actual gameplay. If people want to spend that time discussing romances more power to them, it's not like we have an OT forum anymore.

I dunno. DA sub-community was always like that. Social justice, yaoi fanfiction and other progressive stuff. In ME forums these things were and still are the minority.

Congratulations! Fear not, I have no reason to disbelieve you (not that I have any idea what it has to do with what I said.)

I figure it goes one of two ways. If a random stranger is going to judge me on the basis of my hobbies, they will either listen to what I have to say with an open mind, or they won't. If there is a brief pre-judgement that fades via the natural progression of open-minded dialogue, then what happened is the same journey in life anyone from any culture undergoes, regardless of what it is. If the person's pre-judgment remains while they forgo the option of open-minded dialogue, then their opinion on the matter is irrelevant to me. And, in my own way, I will ultimately end up judging them for that closed-mindedness.

I don't see "gaming" as a homogeneous culture, so I don't see the point of an approach that sees a problem sharing a hobby with people who appreciate different aspects of gaming than I do. I'm not going to change their tastes, and their opinions do not reflect on me except to those who refuse to examine their preconceptions, regardless.

Of course, I'm no stranger to the broader topic, or using a satirical approach to its discussion. Guilty as charged.

For me it's less about being judged for my hobbies and more about getting demoralized when I'm constantly reminded that the world is full of assclowns. Generally something I'd prefer not to dwell on, but they're louder than most other people.

   ah good old days...

I always hung out at the Carth fan girl and  Bastila forever sites.  Visited the other areas, discussing gray Jedi and HELP I"M STUCK suggestions.  But having discussions on why Carth was AWESOME and Bastilla stuck up was fun.   :)  - for the record I liked both of them.   It's just that back then there were just the two choices.  Now, it's sometimes a bit overwhelming with so many options.

class - ME1 favorite class was Adapt.  ME3 - Engineer.   Love  - sniper rifle.

When a person who has not personally known any or known very few gamers in their life, and they watch the dumb idiot gamers wish cancer on jimmy kimmel for an (unfunny) joke against gamers on national television, hear about friends getting verbally attacked for just been a woman (CoD is infamous for these type of gamer), and both of these on top of what I described earlier... how do you think that will affect the persons first impressions upon knowing I associate with gamers?

Do you consider yourself any good at considering viewpoints that aren't your own? Because I'm not seeing it here. The gaming culture gets **** on a lot by popular culture, you know?

Nope. What's more, I'm not convinced it happened. Discussing romance entails discussing character development, character history, and some of the things that can make a play through feel more unique. As much as there is to say about class and power builds, there's simply more to say about romantic content.

It's also not something any fandom is immune to. Wherever there is the slightest provocation, there will be people to start shipping.

OP, your threads are passive aggressive, and it's made all the more obnoxious by the fact that one of the currently active romance related threads is yours, and it's also passive aggressive. People on these boards complain about other people discussing romance all the time, but half of that time they're hyperbolizing how much they're forced into contact with that discussion.

If you don't want to be exposed to romance discussion, you could not enter those threads, or even put those of us talking about it on ignore. But if you're going to lament that discussion as a great discredit to the gaming community, then sorry. You're just lamenting human nature.

I think OP might be feeling resentful that no one responded to their skill based movement topic.

We don't even know if there are classes in MEA. It might seem like a no brainer, but EA has a habit of cutting established features out of sequels.

If they do return, I'll go with engineer or infiltrator, since those are the two classes I never played in the trilogy.

ME:A forum sounds more intresting. And I guess you forgot to mention discussion about characters which is quite big part of discussion and lot of discussion would fall under lore and what will Bioware do to bring ME:A part of ME world.

I think most of those things in Kotor forum are something that will appear closer to release and after it.

I'm still not seeing what that has to do with anything that I said in response to you, but regardless, I suspect that if Jimmy Kimmel made a joke about gamers, I would either laugh or shrug. I doubt that I would get upset about it. It doesn't surprise me that someone else would, we live in a strange world, but that still doesn't reflect on me, whether I share a hobby with that person, or not.

Do you consider yourself any good at considering viewpoints that aren't your own? Because I'm not seeing it here.

How delightful that you have ascertained my ability to consider multiple viewpoints on the basis of a handful of posts (at least one of which you seem to have completely misunderstood to have been some kind of commentary about whether you meet people in life.)

HA!  I didn't even realize that the OP was the person responsible for that other lame romance thread.  So, let me get this right, the OP complains about how people are too focused on romance, but is also responsible for 40% of the recent romance threads?  BSN is truly a gift sometimes.........
