Hiall,

this is my main character, the one that has finished the main game, and with whom I'd like to go on to all 3 DLCs.

My party was made of Cassie, Cole and Solas. With the hairy elf gone ( :P) I need a new mage, and I was opting for Dorian, as I'm a Knight Enchanter on my own.

Has anyone got a rock-solid build for this mage? I only went with fire and lightning so far, using the spec main ability when enemies get close. I left all the burden of cures and barriers to solas (or Dorian, eventually..)

I'm quite sure there must be a better point allocation for my char and maybe even a better company....

Anyone got good advices?

Thanksalot!

P.s. I romanced Josie.... if anyone cares...:)

It sounds like you want him to be able to support with Spirit, so you might want to invest in most of that tree.  At the least it is usually worth having the npc mages grab Barrier->Dispel.  Since Dorian is a Necro you run into incompatibility between Simulacrum and Guardian Spirit so depending on what you want out of him, you might want to skip one or the other.  The bad thing is that there are passives or powers beyond them that you might want.

With FF on and assuming I just want Dorian to support with little management, I usually skip most of the right side of the Necromancer tree just so he picks up Death Siphon.  I do this partly because the AI can't really manage Simulacrum for self res, and because I would rather get the right side of Spirit, and spend more in Fire and Storm.  I usually have him get the right side of Storm down to Static Cage / Lightning Cage, and at the least Immolate through Clean Burn in Fire.  Then in Ice get at least Fade Step so he has a dodge.

With FF off I might do the same thing, but I am more likely to just go down the right side of Necro to get Walking Bomb to put on ranged units, or targets in a Static Cage.  You can still get it with FF but you will probably want to manage it manually.

If you want to use Dorian I suggest you do as I and ignore his Necromancer tree to build him for support and combo setups. Ice, Spirit, and Lightning trees.

It's best to actually spec the entire party at once, so you can build synergies for combos.

As a KE you should take on the Barrier duty. Your Barrier should be better and you don't need it for yourself. Sticking it on Dorian deprives him of skill points he desperately needs in Pyro or Lightning.

I won't recommend my build since it was a special-purpose build: dragon fighting. I'm sure other people will post more general purpose builds, or you can search for one of the many already posted. KE is popular.

But for the Pyro part, definitely build down to Fire Mine and pick up Chaotic Focus as soon as possible after upgrading Fire Mine. You've got Barrier to burn and the damage buff is significant.

I agree in that Dorian is normally better as a support mage; however, I always dip 3 points (at minimum) into necromancer to pick up Death Syphon and his Focus.  Let the AI use the focus and it does wonders.  Someone dies, and the AI will pop group haste and use that free time to resurrect someone in the party.  Plus death syphon means he'll get some mana and health back.  It is debatable whether you need the killing blow to get the benefit of death syphon.  I've seen people support both sides.  Either way it's one potentially awesome passive on the way to group flask of lightning!!!!

Also, later in the game you can dip down the right side and pick up simulacrum if you can find a nice heal on-hit staff for Dorian.  Then you can drop guardian spirit in the spirit tree and Dorian will never die.

I usually take fade step/frost step for my knight enchanters.

Why wait for enemies to get close when you can be in their face at the hit of a button?

I have fade step but I never use it to go in the face of enemies... The sword's damage is not as high as that of a lightning or a fire spell. I usually use it as a resource for when someone gets too close..

If I dip into spirit, what would I take out? I know going spirit would allow me to build better barriers, and also to make a one-Mage party... But I wouldn't know what to take out...

can I do it with just me as a mage? And...is there somebody that can tell me if Qunaris get good banter in the dlcs?

I expect some interesting qunari banter with Trespasser, but I didn't see much with the other two.  Dwarves get some in Descent.  Haven't spent much time with JoH.
