The greatest part of all is that the names of the two privates are the names of the guy who administrates this website and a guy from ad astra games (company that makes Hard SciFi tactical games). Both guys are reasonably well known in some circles for applying hard-science to science fiction.
So that scene was basically a shout-out to those guys.
