I left him to be executed but I can't help but feel like I should have thrown the Inquisition's weight around and got him out of prison...
What to do with Blackwall...

Should the Inquisitor choose to send Blackwall to the Wardens, however, it is implied that he will undergo the Joining

There should not have been an option to have Blackwall get off scot-free.
Every choice should have mandated some sort of penance, at minimum. And more than just 'internal penance' or whatever.

We don't know if we get away with it scot-free. I can see that as being one of the things Orlais will be angry with us about in Trespasser.

There's nothing implying otherwise. Besides, it's Blackwall who needs to pay penance. Not the Inquisition.

If you feel he deserves to stay in prison, there's no need to force your self to do something different.

- Leave Blackwall in prison: Orlesian courts decide.
- Force him to continue living the lie: he's indentured to the Inquisition.
- Allow him to join the Wardens as Warden Constable Blackwall intended: he undergoes the Joining and will serve as a Warden until he dies.
- Allow him to live as Thom Rainier: he devotes his life to atonement.

Oh, I agree. He needs to pay for the atrocity he committed. I never let him walk away scot-free. He spends the rest of his life in custody as a conscript.

I always make him undergo the Joining. That way if he survives he can atone, if not, he's been punished. Sort of like what Anora tells you if you consider sparing Loghain.

You can't have unpleasant things in video games work like that. You need to be able to separate what your protagonist wants as a character and what you want as a player.
Struggle is an absolute necessity in drama. And suffering almost always goes along with that. Obviously, protagonists don't want to suffer, but we as players 'want' it (or should 'want' it) because the story needs it. Perhaps 'want' isn't the best word. it needs to happen. How's that?
The player can't be allowed to avoid suffering because the protagonist doesn't 'want' it.
Blackwall is clearly a good person who is doing his best his atone. The protagonist doesn't 'want' him to pay penance, but it needs to happen.
- Allow him to live as Thom Rainier: he devotes his life to atonement.
Self imposed penance isn't good enough.

I kept him as an indentured servant, a tool that will be cast aside to die when he's no longer useful. He won't get pity from me.

I think I lost the equipment he was carrying when he ran off. It's not in my inventory. Unless he left it in a chest in the barn or something. I haven't checked that...

Yes, if you don't remove his equipment you loose it if you don't save him. Anything he is wearing stays with him.

So what would you suggest your options be when you discover who he is? There's no real reason why the Inquisitor must absolutely commit to dealing with Ranier further.

You can not talk to him if you like as well. I stopped talking to him after I acquired the Necromancer skill tree and he told me he hated me... Could not stand to talk to this guy afterwards to find out about him.

Did he actually use the word hate? I've ever chosen this spec before, but the only dialogue I know of is the one where he suggests that the Inquisitor might sleep with corpses.

Then you must pay penance on his behalf. The universe can't balance itself out otherwise.

Would be interesting if we could choose to be a real evil dude.
Penance-schmenance. Let em all go, recruit them, let the mayhem begin. Corypheus ain't got nothing on me. He still has his training wheels on.
Here comes the Spanish Inquisition! Join us or die. Tevinter should follow the examples of the Inquisition.
Reign of terror across the land.
Why do we always have to be some goody twoshoes?
Blackball would be my beeyotch.
