If anything, this patch reveals the Spirit Blade spammers and the actual Knight Enchanters. The Spirit Blade spammers are crying foul over here and on Reddit whereas the true Knight Enchanters are quite happy with the change.

Please don't be an elitist *******. Your way of playing a knight enchanter is no more or less valid than anyone else's.

As my current portrait indicates, my plan is to be playing a Rift mage in this session. But I enjoy having Barrier remaining up so much longer as a KE that it may take bribery to have me go through with it.

I used to love Rift Mage...Until I discovered the Weakness/Shock bug...& that it remains unfixed....even in this patch...

Since Bioware have made some adjustments to Necromancer and Knight Enchanter, its either KE or Necro.

Just swing the sword more times. =]

My mage is a rift mage, so I don't really care about this. Vivienne is my KE, and I only have her use the sword a few times every few battles. So it seems like the new changes will actually work better for me when I finally download the patches.

A little troubling that there are still only 8 ability slots though.

That's a really bad indicator. In MMO, they can adjust and change and buff and nerf the abilities to their heart's content - there's PvP, raids/operations, tactical interaction between players and classes. Dragon Age Inquisition is a single player game. What, I should forget my legal copy with all DLCs, and pirate an old version instead - just to play the way I like? That really doesn't make any sense.

Please don't. This type of blanket statement is ignorant and meant to be nothing but inflammatory. I haven't touched my KE for months, I've been playing many other characters. Yet I was looking forward to playing my KE with Trespasser since that is who I had romanced Solas with. It's less to do with the damage, because the game was never hard with any class - it's about changing the play style of a class 9 months after release. They fixed thousand cuts months ago, why now for this? It just seems out of left field.

That is kinda sad but it basically turns something that is super Over powered to jut a bit bad ass, it'll be fine.

Truly Bad-Ass is a Mage Hero of Ferelden using the same technique but armed with Starfang or Vigilance. Hot knife through butter!

Why not arm the other mages with guard-breaking upgrades in their staves? I believe there are aggressive staff blades that allow those types of materials.

I always used KE for my playthrough because I enjoy making Vivienne redundant - but I always thought that the crux of KE was infinite barrier, not Spirit Blade. It doesn't seem to be nerfed that badly to me - but then I rotate weapons before every battle and fight from a distance while still keeping close combat as an option. I like the ability of fighting as an inconsequential mage that someone might just stroll up to as "easy pickings" and immediately slashing them to shreds because you're now a more hidden form of badass. No need to swing that blade, but you can hit for tremendous damage the moment someone looks at you funny.

I like the lower powerlevels, but that's just me.

What does that have to do with how people like to play their Knight Enchanters?

IMO, SB can safely fall to the wayside now.

Just get the right passives and a good Cooldown Amulet, spam Fade Cloak & Immolate or Energy Barrage and everything melts.

Yeah, that's basically what I'll do when I upgrade to next gen. It's not much different than playing without Spirit Blade on an Arcane Warrior in multiplayer.

As far as the defensive side of things, my vision is simply not too great at finding incoming missile fire, let alone having the reactions to counter them. Leaving SB as an offensive set, and alternate with spells; how I already play to maintain Barrier, and now it charges the blade, too. Gotta love synergy!

I also discovered that Mark of Death, if upgraded for increased duration, can no longer be manually ended for the damage bonus ;n;

Oh well, this patch brought in too many great new things for me to be sad about it. Especially faster node interaction! THANK YOU BIOWARE.

I'm a Spirit Blade spammer. But I also enjoyed slowing enemies, dropping barriers for my party and using my inquisitor abilities. This change allows me to be more of a mage by using the SB to complement mage spells like chain lightning which might have been the original intention.

I do disagree on the timing of the change however but found Sera's poison> lightning flask > thousand cuts combo to be far more game breaking when repeated at max buildup.

Nerfing single-player abilities is stupid. Nerfing a single-player ability that isn't even "OP" to begin with is even more stupid. The Spirit Blade was not some game-breaking god mode ability. Even if you just spam it over and over it takes 3 decades to kill bosses/dragons with it. Other specs and classes can dish out more damage more quickly. Nerfing Spirit Blade and adding different functions to it that make it more complicated to properly utilize is a foolish waste of time and resources. Are they just ****ing around while waiting for the next game to be greenlit?

Yeah, pretty much. KE is no more OP then reaver, assassin or champion, all DPS dealers. Hell, combine champion's to the death with walking fortress and they become even more of an unkillable tank then KE.

Sigh, so, any good builds for KE after the patch?

2h champion puts out some serious damage with those abilities. About to test it out on my current play through. I've heard the possibility of 50k crits? I've only seen 18k with it, but with whirlwind that's a chain of hit/crits for 10k each hit and going up each hit. You put out 100k damage in short order.

Nothing else about the Knight Enchanter was touched, so you can still play a barrier generating machine. Fade Cloak, Immolate, Fine Mire, Chain Lightning, Energy Barrage, Barrier, still all you'd need.

For Active slots, I use: Static Cage, Energy Barrage, Chain Lightning, Barrier, Dispel, Spirit Blade, Fade Cloak, and Focus of Choice. I substitute Aegis of the Rift for either Focus or Chain Lightning. And if variety is required, Inferno is substituted for Chain Lightning.

Remain at range, lead from the back, and if melee is needed, alternate SB with Fade Cloak, Energy Barrage, and Chain Lightning or Inferno.

* Spirit school: all except Mind Blast, Revival, and Strength of Spirit.

* Storm school: All except Lightning Bolt and Energy Bombardment upgrade.

* Fire School: upgraded Immolate, Flashpoint, and Clean Burn (may also have Wall of Fire; uncertain).

* Focus: all.

This is from memory, and a faded one at that. Winter school may have Fade Step and Winter Stillness, but likely respecced those to get Aegis instead; uncertain.

I think not. You can boost the damage of your lightsaber spirit blade well beyond the pre-patch levels with the Force your spells. Couple that with Conductive Current and the lightsaber spirit blade will be very powerful now in terms outright damage.

Before this, Knight Enchanter = Spirit Blade spammer. This adds a new depth to the Knight Enchanter that was previously missing.

Now you have to be more tactical with using Spirit Blade.

What's more, the damage to guard and barrier is still there. Previously, it was too much.

Additionally, the lightsaber spirit blade still has a low mana cost.

IMO, this is not a nerf because it opens up new ways to play the Knight Enchanter.

What most of us must realize is that the core of the Knight Enchanter specialization is Fade Shield, in the same way the Restorative Veil is the core of Rift Mage, Simulacrum is the core of Necromancer and Opportunity Knocks is the core of the Artificer.

lol no it doesn't people will just stop using it and do a ranged KE build. If you are on normal or lower mode you can still spam spirit blade. At least it doesn't seem significantly nerfed to be an issue to anyone playing on the "normal" modes. Anything above that is the problem. Those kinds of people aren't going to tactically use anything. They are going to drop useless skills for them and find the build that's the absolute best.

Sure, if you don't care about balancing or build diversity.

Why would diversity matter in SP? lol You can't force people into builds so if someone only wants to play KE why should that matter to anyone else? Balancing doesn't matter because this game is **** at that anyways. Bioware has always struggled with balancing. As someone else said all classes have some level of OPness. Some are damn near unkillable.

defending blade was always horrible .with amplified. are attacks increase its more achievable attack then waiting to deflect an attack that you very well miss .so too me amplified. is now a must for every knight echanter in every build good bye defending blade wont miss you.

Spirit Blade did not get butchered. Bioware just changed the mechanic behind the move so you can't spam it endlessly.

It actually works as an incredible burst-damage move now if you properly mix it with your other abilities.

Meh, maybe butchered was a strong description. Initial impression and all that. Still it really irks me that they mess with it now, after 9 months of having it this way. It's rather silly to mess with it now. I tried it out, it's okay. It's different, will take some getting used to. It's completely different than what I chose though - and completely changes the play style. It's not the end of the world but I am truly disappointed in the change.

Who cares? I didn't want to use any other abilities, I wanted to play Jaws of Hakkon on level 14, like I did during my first playthrough. Now I can't.

It's essentially a different ability now and it's much weaker than before. How is 'butchered' not an applicable term?
