Can we spare Loghain even if Alistair is not hardened? in that case Loghain is alive and Alistair leaves and becomes a drunk guy?

Ok, I feared that there was a possibility that we are not asked to decide if we spare him or not.
Oh, yes, when you choose Alistair for the duel, he will always kill Loghain if he wins 
he doesn't even ask you. Damn you Alistair, who's in charge here? >_< he gave up his responsabilities, except the only time we would like to decide by ourselves.

LOL Alistair doesn't know that. He figures you're sympatico on that situation! Actually, even if you choose Alistair for the duel, because for me it was always the most logical choice, him being the other 'injured party', you should get an opportunity to interrupt him. At least for the recruitment potential. It would go down just like with the PC and Riordan stepping up, only ugh...I'd have to see his fit every game. Never mind

I usually only have Alistair duel him on my mages. Prevailing prejudices being what they are, I figure going after Loghain with magic just seems like dirty pool. I suppose I can have someone else do it (Zevran or Leliana come to mind). Once I tried to get Dog to do it, but Eamon wouldn't let me, the bastard.

Dog could have taken Loghain, no doubt about it. He had no problem with the Archdemon(after I used 1000 health poultices).

I just had an image in my head of my most loyal crew member fighting him. And Eamon said Muffin couldn't do it because his loyalty could be bought with a ham bone! The cheek!

Dog gets along pretty well with Loghain when they are together at the camp, they like each other
