I get no music or sound in 5.1 mode, just dialog. However, if I change to the Stereo Mode for headphones in the Dragon Age audio menu everything works fine.
I am using a Sound Blaster X-Fi X TremeGamer and Ceative Labs G51 speakers. My drivers are all up to date.
No 5.1 sound

I have the same issue. I have the same sound card as you. I don't see any type of option in the audio menu for changing sound, so I think this game simply doesn't support 5.1+ sound. Pretty pathetic in this day and age.

That might explain why my Tritton AX360 5.1 Headset for PS3 has no sound. I could tell the direct box wasnt detecting the Dolby sound, but it SAYS Dolby on the packaging...
IM forced to use my TV's default speakers which means I cant play late night when the wife's gone to bed...

Yeah.. disappointing. I suspect it was done because the position of the camera and the various sound sources is arbitrary at any given time. Still, games like Total War have 5.1 sound and they too have flexible cameras.

Alchemy was only to provide support for vista users after MS removed the hardware layer for direct sound. I have XP and still do not get native 5.1 sound. It could be you have something generating the surround for you.. I was going to try that. I forget what creative calls their artificial surround sound but it should be better then nothing.

Let me know if it works.
This is a pretty disapointing release, I expected better from BioWare.

Anyone notice DAO seems to over-use the subwhoofer? I have to turn it WAAAAAY down or it shakes the walls.

Yeah, I don't seem to have any surround sound (7.1 speakers) with my X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion Series card. I'm going to try ALchemy and see if it works. Seems odd that there's no choices for speaker settings.

absolutely pathetic job on this.
why not make the game have no widescreen support while your at it?
seriously...there is no excuse for not having surround sound in a game these days...no excuse at all.
