I can create a male character and play without any problems, but when I try to create a new female character the game always crashes just as the first movie (the one where the illusive man and miranda) plays. Not always at the same spot, but around that time. It can't really be hardware issues, can it? Since I can play the game with the male character just fine.

Okay. I have now tried all manner of graphics configuration variations, I tried shutting the sound off in the config utility, I've tried to bypass the movie where the game hangs, but it seems that particular movie where Miranda and the Illusive Man talks in the beginning is hiddena way somewhere other than the bik folder. I have also tried importing a female ME1 character. The importing works well enough, but the game still crashes at roughly the same spot.
I still can't start a game with a female character. I can still create a male character without issues though. Gah.

Okay, I now made it into the gameplay type thing intro, where you run through the burning normandy to save Joker, but it crashed to desktop with the "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working" message again. Quite frustrating.

First of all please tell us your system specs, if you don't know what hardware you have use the ME2 configuration tool as Chris describes here.
Are your drivers up to date, especially the ones for your graphic card?
Next step, have you already tried to reinstall ME2? Maybe there were simply some files corrupted during the installation.

I've reinstalled the game twice, no difference.

Me again. Still no luck with playing a female character. I would very much appreciate some help.

I reinstalled my computer and installed Windows 7 instead of Vista and re-downloaded the game from Steam. I STILL have the same problem.

I'm kind of bummed here. Still no luck and the EA customer support hasn't responded to my query. I regret buying this game.
