The games do, but Bungie love their lore.

Basically, Shclerf dragged in every bit of it he could and assumed that the players knew most of it.

Well, he (or 'the writing team ') assumed we read the Forerunner novels.

And that's the problem. I had friends that played co-op campaign with me on Day 1 for every single release since 2001, and they didn't even know what was going on halfway through Halo 4. Bottom line is external media (i.e. novels and terminals) should not be required to understand the context and intricacies of a narrative. And when Halo vets don't 'get it', there's obviously a problem.

Yes, Halo's lore is epic beyond comprehension. Dwarfing Mass Effect even. But the implementation doesn't demonstrate it in the least. Schlerf being lead writer of ME:A is my biggest worry besides the continued linearity of the series' level design.

This. I'm not against there being external content that adds to the game world, but it should always be stuff that you can separate from the story of the game without taking much away from it, like Cassandra or James Vega's backgrounds.

Exactly. They should be supplementary material, not mandatory material. There's nothing worse than hitting a narrative point, and you simply don't understand what's going on anymore.
