Greetings!

Just like my ME2 thread of the same nature, you guys probably knew this was possible. But for those who didnt? Well now you will! :D

So, whilst i take a break from ME2 modding and trying to wrap my head around ME3 modding i took a stab at ME1 modding! :P I installed the MEUIT Mod , but that wasnt enough. Now the game looked nice with all these hi-res textures but i wanted to do what i'd been doing in ME2 and changing the way our Shepards look!

I'd say i've succeeded. Mostly.   I can get Shepard to look like Garrus, Wrex, Tali, Kirrahe, Geth Trooper, Ventralis and Saren.

Unfortunately, just like in the ME2 mods some sacrifices are to be made if you'd like to use these.  These sacrifices range from animation/movement issues (geth trooper) to simply having no health bar or grenades. I tried to get Liara and Matriarch Benezia to work but Liara wouldnt load and Benezia caused some serious graphical errors similar to Ventralis but worse.

Apart from having to deal with a few things like that, each NPC loads and animates/moves exactly as they should. So Wrex has his waddle when he walks, Garrus's talking animations are...mostly correct/etc. Heck its alot better than ME2  in this regard! :pinched:

What do you need to do?  If you've customized your Shepard's head then for starters you need to start a new game with a Shepard using the default head or edit your save file somehow to revert the head morph back to default. This may have just been an issue I had but when trying these on my Shepard where i'd customised the head in the CC, the NPC body armor loaded but the head was always missing and was replaced with my Shepards head however the problem went away when i started a new game with default Shepard.

I'm not too sure but i think Squad Armor material/textures may change on-the-fly depending on some unknown variables. It will require testing But when i was trying this out before starting a default Shepard, Wrex's Armor was red however now its a different color scheme.

You also need the MEUIT Mod, the BIOEngine file i have has been edited with that in mind and i dont know if the BIOGame files will work without it, you can download it [HERE] but feel free to try without it and let us know! I highly recommend it though as it really boosts up the graphics! I'm including the pre-edited BIOEngine file as well. (Credit for the Mod goes to CDAMJC over at ModDB)

Each BioGame file has the name of the NPC it'll load at the front, so you get GarrusBIOGame, WrexBIOGame etc... to load the file of the NPC you want to play as, MOVE (NOT copy) YOUR OWN BIOGame file somewhere and then just rename the file of the NPC you want to BIOGame.ini and run the game! Both Male and Female should both load the same NPC.

Where is the BIOGame file located?  C:/Users/YOURUSERNAME/Documents/BioWare/Mass Effect/Config

Before you download the files, here is a video of each of the above in action talking to Navigator Pressley or Chakwas and Jenkins (Nowhere near as long as the ME2 vid i did :P )

Enjoy! :D

This is easier than it looks (and by the way, you won't need to change BOTH genders for this to work)

Remember: You can still make a custom Shepard, but do not change the appearance (it has to look default in order to work properly) - So feel free to mess around with classes and stuff.. Personally I'd say that heavy armor fits well on Liara ;)

Open the BIOgame.ini file (located in Documents/BioWare/Mass Effect/Config)

Change this line (if female): m_femaleActorType=BIOG_Female_Player_C.Human.Human_Female

Or this (if male): m_maleActorType=BIOG_Male_Player_C.Human.Human_Male

If you want to play as a squad-member, these are the commands to do so:

Play as Liara:  m_femaleActorType=BIOG_Asari_Hench_C.hench_asari

Play as Tali:  m_femaleActorType=BIOG_Quarian_Hench_C.hench_quarian
Play as Ashley: m_femaleActorType=BIOG_HumanFemale_Hench_C.hench_humanfemale

Play as Garrus: m_maleActorType=BIOG_Turian_Hench_C.hench_turian

Play as Wrex: m_maleActorType=BIOG_Krogan_Hench_C.hench_krogan

Play as Kaidan: m_maleActorType=BIOG_HumanMale_Hench_C.hench_humanmale

Play as Jenkins: m_maleActorType=BIOG_Jenkins_Hench_C.hench_jenkins

All these options has worked well for me

Also there are possibilities to play as NPC's and bosses as well.
These are some commands that I have tried out:

Matriarch Benezia: m_femaleActorType=BIOA_ICE_C.ASA.ice60_matriarch

Geth Trooper: m_maleActorType=BIOG_Geth_C.Geth.MIN_GethTrooper

Maeko Matsuo: m_femaleActorType=BIOA_ICE_C.HMF.ice_hmf_maekoguard

Kaira Stirling: m_femaleActorType=BIOA_ICE_C.HMF.ice20_kairastirling

Captain Kirrahe: m_maleActorType=BIOA_JUG_C.SAL.jug20_sal_captainkirrahe

Geth Shock Trooper: m_maleActorType=BIOG_Geth_C.Geth.ELT_GethShockTrooper

Saren: m_maleActorType=BIOG_Saren_C.BOS_Saren

C-SEC Salarian: m_maleActorType=BIOA_STA_C.SAL.sta30_csec_salarian

These are some examples.. They do work, but you are limited to no HUD and some other glitches and bugs that may occur, but they look cool nonetheless :)

Hope this helps with the "modding" (or rather tweaking) of Mass Effect

Also, the M.E.U.I.T.M mod by CDAMJC is recommended for the best experience (If your PC can run it that is) - Dedicated graphics is mandatory for smooth framerates. Note: AMD APU's count as dedicated graphics.

Minimum: Nvidia GeForce GTX 550Ti or better, AMD Radeon HD 6770 or better - or any mobile equivalent to either.

Recommended: Nvidia GeForce GTX 650Ti Boost or better, AMD Radeon HD 7850 or better - And make sure your graphics card does have more than 1 GB of GDDR5 (2GB or higher is better) - Also, if you are experiencing crashes due to the graphics mod, install the Large Address Aware patch (that will help a lot).

Also as a note to you guys with AMD FX processors: If you experience your character turning into an all-black Minecraft-looking thing during Peak 15 on Noveria and on Ilos, don't worry, it's normal, because these CPU's lack a set of instructions that were used in the first Mass Effect game. This can't be fixed in any way, other than changing your CPU into another (Any Intel, any AMD APU or older AMD x86 CPU - Phenom II-line being the last)

Thanks for the info! I agree it is quite easy indeed! I think the only difference between yours and mine is that i changed the female actortype as well as male to save any new people to this having to do it themselves. And that you have put forth a few more options so many thanks for that too :D

Although as i said for Benezia and Liara, for me Liara doesnt seem to load at all and Benezia caused some graphical hiccups and also she shrunk?

I notice with the Geth ones they have the same pesky bug that they have in ME2, that a human flesh texture seems to replace most of the arms, legs and back of the geth.  Unless i've been doing something wrong :pinched: Although AzertyKeys over at Reddit told me its a texture issue for ME2 so perhaps the same for ME1. I know theres a fully textured geth model somewhere in ME1 though that may solve that...hmmmm

Edit: Oh also! Anyone know what Nihlus's load name is? I thought it'd be similar to Saren but nope. :(

I noticed you mentioned that the armor changes appearance and color, when the specific character is selected by the player.
That may be a factor caused by the default armor-setting of Commander Shepard (as Shep's default armor is called "Onyx")

Squadmates' default armor:

Liara: Gladiator I

Garrus: Agent I

Kaidan: Onyx I (without N7-logo)

Tali: Hydra I

Ashley: Phoenix I

Wrex: Mercenary I

So that may be the "issue" regarding the armor color schemes.

And for the Liara "issue" you were experiencing, I had it as well, But I found out that the game re-writes the config the first time you start up with Liara as selected character, so you have to close the game, and re-write the config again, this time it should work though (That was my problem with selecting Liara) - You only need to do this once however!

[Spoiler] If you play as Liara, you will not change into default Shep during the romance scene near the end, or if visiting the Consort on the Citadel, you will instead experience yourself being (another*) Liara. This also occurs in the parts where you try to "decipher" the information given by the Prothean beacon, both on Feros, and when Liara is reading your mind, your eyes will turn black as well

* if you choose to romance Liara

Oh thats cool then! Makes sense i guess as we could change the appearances of the squad armor via their locker anyway. Thanks! :)

Thanks for the info on Liara too, personally im not a fan of the Asari  (*Hides*) so it wont be of much use to me but for anyone who tries this? Enjoy! :D

Here is a link to a screenshot of me playing as Liara - Standing next to the real Liara as a comparison: https://gyazo.com/64...b976314e06b1cf8
So, it does work fine.. (Apologies for bad quality in the picture, but the print-screen function does sometimes capture too much film grain)
