For a second there I was REALLY excited that maybe I'd finally found a place to get out of their boxed in terrain maps and explore some unfinished areas. But then the gamer's BBF "Mr. Invisible Wall" decided to pay me a visit:

I would try to "switch to companion" exploit, but they won't follow me up there...

Anyone actually managed to find a place where you can get out of the map? I mean somewhere like this where you can really free roam - I know there are tons of little tiny pockets you can get stuck in.

Yeah, I've found ways to break out of every map (except the Fallow Mire... I think). But, I know it's trickier on the console than the PC.

The way I break out-of-bounds is to use a mount (I find the Nuggalope works best) and nuzzle it's left side right up against an invisible wall (as tightly as you can), then dismount. Since you dismount to the left, you can "pop" through invisible walls. It's tricky though, and finding just the right place can take some time. But if you can find a tree in the middle of an invisible wall, "popping" through it can be a little easier.

The other way is to find a place where the invisible wall is low and work your way over it. Here's BioFan's video for breaking out of bounds in the Hinterlands on the XB1.

After you've figure out the trick, there are huge out-of-bounds regions to explore on most of the maps. :)

A few tips for when you break out-of-bounds on the maps...

1. Walk a good ways away from the invisible wall before you set a save point. If your save is too close to an invisible wall, it will put you back in-bounds when you load it.

2. This also applies to re-summoning your mount. If you're too close to an invisible wall, your mount will just rocket back in-bounds.

3. Better to go solo when doing this, companions can complicate positioning.

4. Save often. You'll find that physics breaks down the farther from in-bounds you go. You can get stuck, wonky footing, fall through the it-was-solid-a-second-ago ground, etc.

5. Do not enter large bodies water near an in-bounds region - it will still be fatal. However, at a certain distance away from an in-bounds region (save often!) you can enter the water safely and explore.

6. Never. use. tac. cam. out. of. bounds. It will either snap you right back in-bounds or teleport you Maker-knows-where.

When you say it's more difficult for consoles, does that mean I should swap to PC controls before I try to do this? Since I have to go all the way out to the #&#* main menu to switch, I wanted to ask before I try this...

Also, the area I was trying at wouldn't let me summon my mount up there. >_<

I don't believe the controls per se are the issue. Just that the console versions of the game themselves seems to, for whatever reason, be more difficult to pull off the tricks I mentioned.

And if you're in an area were you cannot summon a mount (like the Fallow Mire, Arbor Wilds and so on) then the only way you can break out-of-bounds is by finding a low spot on in the invisible wall (which can be very tricky) and finding a way over it on foot.

Probably because they did a hell of a much better job optimizing the console versions! n.nU

As for the second part of what you said. does the companion swapping trick doesn't work on invisible walls then? I remember using that one to glitch through a door inside that Deep Roads area (I forget the name) into an unfinished but fully furnished area with unique loot.

Or was it patched or something? To be honest, I haven't played since I think patch 5 or 6 - I have a consistent CTD going on right at the end of the Winter Palace part of the main storyline that I gave up on trying fixes for. I checked back every patch, but it didn't clear up til patch 9...

I've never seen the Companions glitch to the other side of an invisible wall, though tbh I've never really explored that option.

Something about the way companions idle and when you swap characters causes physics pushed to propel them through collision objects.

Took me a bit to remember what it was and find a video showing it - it was in the zone Valammar in the Hinterlands:

The room is fully furnished with loot and the like, and there's actually a note in there that can't be found anywhere else.

Ah, reminds me of the good old days of getting out of the map in Halo  ^_^  Or special places. Get in a vehicle, then get out and force yourself through a wall or on top of something! I've always liked exploring outside maps in games, so thanks :)

Yeah, the push trick. But AFAIK, it doesn't work with invisible walls. That room in the video is normally accessed through Varric's personal quest "Well, ****" It's just locked if you access Valammar before it.

NP!

If you decide to do some out-of-bounds exploring - Crestwood, the Emerald Graves and the Western Approach are the most fun.  :)  Hinterlands just to get to Redcliffe Castle.

HA! I got one! I managed to get out of the playable map area in the "Flooded Caves - Deepest Tier" by rebounding off some stalagmites to push me over the wooden barricade:

I then managed to get over that big rock by jumping at it, then swapping to my companions when they teleported on top of it. I'm a bit disappointed I couldn't continue exploring down that passageway, though:

EDIT: Yay! I managed to get out of southern Crestwood - this is AWESOME!

Not a great moment for the game when I'm having the most fun I've had in the 50 hours I've been playing it when I'm not playing the actual game! n.nU

Wtf lol - there's a place on the far north of the map in northern Crestwood where the map is stamped with the outline of a cursor:

I also found an unfinished fishing shack nearby:

Congratz! B)

And so long as you're not too close to the in-bounds shore, you can explore underwater. There's some great views of the island and dam (both sides) to be found underwater. Also Trout Lake on the other side (with the broken Andraste statue) and climbing up atop the stone halla is worth it for a selfie or two... ;)

I had some trouble near the top of the area that you fight the wyverns at. I kept getting dismounted and being unable to remount, until I realized there was a cave system under me, and the "no mount zone" was extending up to the "roof" as it was! n.nU

OMG LOL:

I'm apparently rebounding off a collision mesh into the water near the base of the dam in Crestwood. I cannot even open the menu to load another save - I had to force close the game lmao.

That barricade is proving very difficult to get over! n.nU

Wow! I found something REALLY NEAT out of bounds in the Western Approach:

It's some kinda "half finished castle", but given that we're in the middle of a harsh desert, I'm going to make belive it's a mirage that was frozen in time by some powerful magics! XD

There's even some towers that are filled with what look like barrels, and they're were in the process of falling when time stopped! :]

This zone is a bit disappointing, though - there are LARGE sections of ground without any collision that you just fall right through. I made sure to stop and dismount/remount my mount every so often because doing that resets your "I fell off the world" respawn point to the place where you last mounted.

Added another video showing some out of bounds finds in northern Crestwood:

This is kinda sad - I'm have a billion times more fun exploring the out of bounds areas than I ever did playing the actual game...

Actually, that's not a secret room. That's the place where you go when you get the mission to help Bianca. It's not available before that.

I ran into the exact same bug.

It's a bit disappointing though when you do get through it, as there is another tough barrier at the far end of the dam. It's easier to take the long way around...

Also be sure to explore the rift - you can go right to the bottom (it's very dusty ;) ).

I know I thought of Shrek when I saw that one. And I would certainly prefer Shrek to Arl Teagan.

I did the entire western part of the Exalted Plains and managed to roam free in parts of the map you can't usually go to. But tbh it was boring, cause there was just grass and some mountains and that was it :D
