Dorian's pretty boring, are you really that married to him? 

 

Iron Bull is funnier, as is Sera.

I want a second mage and am not a big fan of Viv and don't want to use Solas as I'm playing a Rift mage myself, so he's sort of my only option.

Dorian, boring? Well, that's a first. He's sarcastic and self-assured, but I find his banter to be quite entertaining, especially with Iron Bull, Sera, and Blackwall. But asking for party recommendations is probably like asking "Which flavor ice cream is best?" Taste is a personal thing.

 

If you're planning on doing a Nightmare run, you're going to have to be careful with Dorian's skill selection and gear. He doesn't have Solas's bottomless mana pool or Vivienne's endless barrier generation, so you may want to consider something with "guard on hit". That said, in a 2-mage party, Static Cage + Horror is a fun way to fry enemies.
