There's a possibility that Chris Schlerf is no longer working on the game. Maybe we can get clarification? (Link inside)

Your guarantees don't mean anything to me.

Well maybe this will. The Mako is returning and looks much faster than the ME1 version. Why would you be given a fast ground transport vehicle if we had small linear level design? The developers have talked about having a bigger emphasis on exploration. The theme of the game is exploring a new galaxy and expanding colonies.

It's Open World. We're probably gonna have multiple large maps to explore similar to DA:I.

Every nostalgia-blinded ME1 fanboy and fanbase contrarian bitched to the high heavens that Mako exploration was cut between ME1 and ME2. We told them it was **** but they didn't care and just kept blubbering on about its potential.

Well guess what. BioWare listened to them and now we're all getting Mako and "exploration" for Andromeda. Enjoy.

It's fair criticism to say ME1 reused a lot of the same maps and hideouts when you were exploring. But the reason I personally enjoyed it so much is because the actual content of some of those side missions were pretty awesome. It's the little stories that made me love ME1's exploration so much. Unexpectedly running into Haliat was one of my favorites.

Why is a slightly faster Mako a sure sign that the game is open world? ME1 is about as open world as Until Dawn but I cruised all over the place in the Mako. They've been working on ME:A since well before DAI launched so the semi-open world concept was untested for them. And since DAI launched the semi-open world has been maligned as having an adverse effect on story and gameplay. So much so that both pieces of story DLC(Descent and Trespasser) for DAI are not even semi-open. When BioWare apes their own designs it's after they're successful and well received.

So has anyone figured out if he's still on it or not?

If so, I say "good riddance".

Only two people deserve such treatment, and one has already left.

Nope, but it's not very likely he's still on the team.

I kind of doubt it. I feel like this will be kept out of conversation for as long as humanly possible. We'll see, though.

There is an expiration date on this possible ruse though. Schlerf won't curb his career until November or December 2016 just so ME:A can avoid a bit of bad press.

Were assuming the reason is not a good one.

I do have a feeling that Chris came in to do some writing and re-writes, and his contract is just up. Only with BioWare is the fate of the writers just as important as who is directing or acting in the game; so I think an official announcement would be nice soon.

I can't really say I share that same feeling, myself. Removing him from a blog post -- after labeling him the project's Lead Writer -- is just a bit too suspect to me.

He was(is?) the head writer. They don't bring in people to punch up scripts and give them the head writer title for a couple months. People who just punch up scripts are frequently not even credited. Head writers are there for the long haul, involved in every aspect of writing, from the plot outline to ambient banter.

I think that is the best guess for when there will be any actual word on it. Bioware won't say a word either way, and confirmation will probably come in the form of an announcement that Chris Schlerf was hired elsewhere.

If they have to get a new lead writer, even if they pick one for the current writing staff. There will be a delay and we'll probably end up getting the new IP first.

I'm not quite convinced of that either. ME1's story was drastically overhauled less than a year ahead of release and plenty of Schlerf's work may yet remain as a guiding force. The managerial duties of the Lead Writer position might not be quite so difficult to ease someone into, either, especially with the likelihood that plenty has already been written.

I am personally anticipating a delay for numerous reasons (this being one of them) but I'm not quite at the level of anticipating such a delay that another BioWare game would release ahead of Andromeda.

That would only make sense if they scrapped Schlerf's work late in the process. If they weren't happy with his work they would have been changing things throughout the writing process, not waiting until they can get rid of him.

Not really.  Drew Karpyshyn left Mass Effect (for Bioware Austin) about a year before ME2 was shipped.  Bioware loses quite a bit of writers in the process.

Come hell or high water, EA will make sure that ME:A comes out for the 2016 holiday season.  It has nothing to do with writing or quality, and everything to do with the shareholders.

It's possible he doesn't have a choice...depending on any kind of exit negotiation/settlement as well as NDA's he may have signed.

Also, a lot of speculation he was removed for writing or personality conflict, but maybe it's a health issue and he requested that it not be disclosed.  Just a thought.

No NDA or contract can legally prohibit anyone from seeking new employment. And no NDA could compel another company not to disclose that they've hired Schlerf.

At this point, I expect, they already have an approved strong script, with a starting point, all major events, plot, and ending, and are just filling the blanks. Don't they?

The history of ME3 would suggest otherwise.

Depends really on his contract, and how many re-writes they are doing at this stage in the game. It is possible the outline and major writing was done by Chris, and his services are no longer required.

Honestly, who knows until BioWare tells us.

That's not what a Head Writer is.

What is the difference between a lead writer and a senior writer?
