I've logged about 300 hours so far. I occasionally see what looks like EDI and Javik in MP. Also, I am always running out of medi-gel. I usually stick to bronze or silver. Before, I used to save for the 20K or 60K pack, but I am thinking that maybe the 5K and 20K packs are better. What spending strategy would be best? I mostly want all the characters and weapons.
If you're running out of gel, or ops/thermal clips/missiles, you need to spam some Jumbo Equipment Packs- for 33k you'll get 5 of each type of consumable, plus other random gear (weapon amps, ammo powers, cyclonics, etc.) of various levels. As far as unlocking characters/weapons/gear/mods I think the conventional wisdom is to work your way up the ladder by maxing your Common weapons/mods/etc. with the 5k Recruit Packs, then move up to the 20k Vet packs to max your Uncommons, and then finally your Rares and Ultra-Rares with the 60k and 99k packs. On the other hand, I have an alt account so I know how annoying it can be to not have any Rare weapons or gear at your disposal, so it wouldn't be a bad thing to grab a few Premo Specter/Arsenal/Reserve packs just to get a few fancy guns/kits to work with, even if you haven't maxed all your Common/Uncommon stuff yet.
I would say play Platinum, and always kill small enemies first. (Excluding swammers, drones, seeker swarm)
It might be challenging first, eventally you will love it.
Move up to Gold, Platinum is boss spam. If you want Platinum, try Collectors and hope for small maps. The big enemies tend to obstruct themselves if the team doesn't **** up the spawns.
Ask people in the lobby to equip Medi-gel Transfer.
If you're only playing bronze and silver, the Recruit (5k) and Veteran (20k) packs are fine for now. Until you're able to carry 6 of everything (medigel, ops packs, etc) you're probably not ready for gold and platinum. You should definitely move up once you're able; trying to max everything out with a paltry 33k/game on Silver is going to take a lifetime.

What q5tyhj said. Also, get out of bronze: on silver, the weapons you start with are still ok, you'll earn credits faster, and you'll learn faster.
I'm a little over 300 hours in, so I get the feeling.
I've just started playing exclusively gold now. I'm currently grinding to get the last of my rare weapons (unmaxed manifest problems) so I have started to buy arsenal packs (and jumbo equipment packs when needed). This is because I only have two more characters to get. I was buying spectre packs in the interim, when I was playing silver games with the occasional gold. I just wasn't unlocking enough rares to make them completely worthwhile, but spectre packs are nice for all of the consumables that they can give.
If you haven't yet maxed your uncommon weapons, I would suggest to stick to buying veteran packs while playing gold games. You'll be able to buy at least three packs with every game completed. If you want more characters, you can try the reserves packs. I honestly don't have as much experience with buying these (I'm going to start after I max rare weapons).
Grinding in this game can be sort of annoying, but mostly time-consuming. I recommend to find a few characters that you are really good at and play with them to basically max out what you want.

1)Post a thread looking for a team on BSN for whatever platform you play on.
2)Speedrun Glacier, Jade, etc.
3)Have fun doing it.
I would say that gold or silver are better for you if you enjoy them more and have more success. People fall in love with the idea of Plat credits but credits per time spent is more important and most important is if you're having fun or feel like it's a grind. If you're spending 30 to 40 minutes on a Plat game then you're wasting your time, if you're playing 15 or 20 mins then failing half way through the game then it's a waste as well; dial it back to gold or silver or whatever you can contribute and have fun playing. Find some friends have fun playing and the manifest just kind of happens. I liked the speed runs because it teaches you a lot about spawns, force you to kill fast on an island so to speak a lot, and forces communication with your teammates.

let's agree to disagree. i was playing gold since day 2. i didn't even know people can have more then 2 medigels. I was just playing cautious, knowing i can only die once. Of course i admit unlocking a krogan soldier typhoon I and crusader I in my first 2 days also helped 
Since i have more equipment and 6 medigels and 6 ops pack i play a lot more agressive. sometimes even careless 
but for platinum experience is needed ofc. and proper kits/gears.

Basically buying recruit (5k) packs when playing bronze, veteran (20k) when playing silver and vanilla spectre (60k) when I moved up to gold. Some people prefer the 100k packs over the 60k spectres but if you want a good balance of rare/UR drops and rank 3 equipment drops, spectre packs are hard to beat.

My current rule of thumb is to save up until I have 1M+ credits, buy jumbo packs to max my gels/ops/missiles, then buy Arsenals for the URs until I get to one of those break points, and then spend the rest on Spectre packs for both URs and the extra consumables.
