Not sure you can get Skyhold by level 5 - I decided to try:

Elven Rogue Archer:

* Zoom through the tutorial, don't pick up anything - pick combat instead of going through the tunnels - already at the gates you're on level 2
* Get yourself to Haven and close the Breach - now you're on level 3
* I just went to the Hinterlands, closed the breach at Calenhad's foothold, created the Lake Luthias camp, cnuck past the battle outside the Crossroads and the outskirts of the Templar camp, took out a few templars to close the camp, up the hill, and now I am level 4

Havent done anything, but i did sync with the nug and am using a refined prowler mail and a 150 DPS bow.
Cass has Warden armour, Varric as well. Solas has his default armour and an ice staff.

So - if I am to gain an additional 15 points in order to go to either Therinfall or Redcliffe, I need to either requisisiotn myself silly, or close more rifts - and make sure neither faction scales me, or that In Your Heart Shall Burn scales me

But - willing to keep trying .)

/A

When you download Trespasser, in the Options menu there is a new menu called Trials. In this menu you can turn on and off all of the Trials mentioned in the new achievements.

It does say to keep multiple save files however, as from the sounds of it Trials can bug out your game.

The achievement for reaching Skyhold before Level 5 needs you to use the Take It Slow trial, which makes you gain XP at half the normal rate.

Had a feeling that Trespasser might have something like that. Personally not suer I'd touch those but each to their own

I've just started a new game on Easy with all of the Trials on.

The only one I'm worrying about atm is Skyhold by level 5. Just reached Hinterlands, I'm still lvl 2 but currently only 200xp from lvl 3. I think this might be difficult.

Completed the achievement just a moment ago. Best method is to save/reload before Inquisition req. agent till she offers mats only reqs. Then just farm them. You have to leave all codex entries behind.

Did you do Templars or Mages, or is there not much difference in XP between them? IIRC there were less enemies in the Mage choice.

Templars. I ignored most of the enemies while saving the Templar leaders. Let the Templars kill most of the enemies in the great hall.

I'm hating this achievement so far :P

It's just knowing that if I'm over on XP just slightly, I'd not get it and have to start over.

By the way, which Requisitions did you farm? Looking at all of the Hinterlands reqs, there aren't many that I could get the ingredients for without killing enemies or doing quests.

Also, among the achievements is something that mentions "Slaying a lvl16 Fereldan Frostback" - Fereldan Frostback is a lvl11 Dragon in the Hinterlands.

It mentions something called "Even Ground" which presumably would make all enemies scale fully to you.

Another achievement mentions "Fair Weather Friends" and reaching Halamshiral with all followers.

If I'm not mistaken, for the even ground one, doesn't doing harder difficulties, tend to increase the enemy level? I've not done a higher difficulty in quite some time, as I've just been messing about farming giants mostly when I play, on easy. But, from what i remember, I'm pretty positive the higher difficulties raise the levels of the enemies, don't hold me to it, maybe I'm wrong, but, if this is indeed the case, would they expect us to truly fight and survive against a nightmare difficulty level dragon? Vinsomer was a ****** take on easy, so, on nightmare? I can only imagine.

You use a trial called "Take it Slow," which halves your XP.

It's actually pretty easy - if you know what you're doing and how to get Power without getting too much XP (try to avoid fighting-related quests and try to recruit every agent you can).

The tricky part is surviving the main story mission (either CotJ or IHW) and the assault on Haven and completing it without getting too much XP and overlevelling (not to mention that all enemies are several levels above you...) - that means no saving Melissa, Adan etc. (I am so sorry please forgive me I'll reload and come back to save you I swear!). Then again I became so paranoid about overlevelling near the end that I probably skipped more combat than I actually needed, since I had a couple hundred XP to spare when I reached Skyhold.

But anyway, it's completely doable, you just need to plan ahead a bit and keep track of your XP and Power... and be ready to die again and again and AGAIN while turning that damn crank at the trebuchet.

No, Nightmare doesn't raise a level. Just amount of HP, and damage they do, as I've observed.

Also, I've killed all ten base game dragons, the Red Lyrium Dragon and Hakky Wakky on Nightmare now. Don't speak to me of difficulty...

Done it this last PT with a re-rolled Trevelyan rogue.

Have stealth. Basically stealth through all the enemies you are not forced to kill for main quests.

Don't recruit any companions, just use Solas Varric and Cass. You can still recruit everybody as soon as you get to Skyhold (but make sure to talk to Krem outside Haven Chantry and to click on Sera's arrow and Vivienne's messenger so the quest has started).

Do Val Royeaux. Kill 4 templars and 4 apostates to be able to talk to Mother Giselle. Do not do quests in the Hinterlands after that, just get camps cause they give power. Do requisitions but not the ones that ask you to kill stuff.. only the ones that ask you to collect things (Iron, elfroot, etc etc). So quick save/quick reload before speaking to the requisition agent to get the right one. If you have no need for grey gear sell everything and buy iron or whatever is needed at the BE (but it's 40 gold per piece so it's a bit hard).

Do NOT loot ANY codex, it gives exp.. so no notes, no wall plaques in Val Royeaux, yada yada..

I did In Hushed Whispers.. there are 2 rifts in the courtyard you can skip! You don't need to do the rifts, just keep walking to the door you are supposed to go and go on. Watch out for companions cause sometimes they engage stuff, so just spam disengage while walking.

During In your heart shall burn, you do not need to fight most of the enemies at the trebuchet! Leave your character in stealth and instruct the others to taunt with tactical camera. Then when the enemies aren't looking just go turn the wheels. Also for the boss there, Knight Captain whatever is his name, the big red monstrousity.. simply ignore him and spam potions cause he will do some aoe damage with his arm and keep aiming the trebuchet.. Done. (This fight is a bit annoying so you may have to redo it, I had to redo it once cause all my party died).

Reached Skyhold at lvl 4.8 or something. I think you can even be a bit into 5 and it will still work. After let's say 5.3 it could not work anymore.

But really it was easier than I thought.

Why would it not work after that ? The achievement says level 5 or under, that should mean as long as you're not level 6 you're good to go.

I was well into level 5 when I got to Skyhold and the achievement popped for me. Farming power was not as hard as I thought. I didn't even bother doing requisitions to get power (except the ones given by Threnn and Mother Giselle). Just set up all the camps, closed a couple of level 4 rifts and completed a couple of quests (east road bandits, apostates in the witchwood, templars to the west specifically). Closing rifts in Redcliffe also gives you power IIRC. As for the story missions, with the difficulty turned down to casual and tier 3 weapons from the Golden Nug they weren't hard to get through at all. This is best done on a throwaway playthrough though.

Because I followed a guide and for some people it did not work. I think it was completely random though or they must have turned it off by mistake or it was bugged.. no idea :D

Thank YOU! You are a life saver, or sanity saver! Doing this with a warrior and mage I rage quite both times; Duh (I'm such a twit) now attempting with a rogue.

I was worried about this as I was still levelling fairly quickly, but I did manage it, I now have all of Inquisition's achievements unlocked. If you make sure to not do anything you don't need to such as not picking up codex entries (50 XP a time you don't want), and using the requisition officer to farm the power needed to unlock IHW or CoTJ to avoid unnecessary combat and XP gain, it can be done, I was on level 5.

Just put take it slow on,

Rush the main quests only, Don't close any rifts. Do them requisitions for power, make sure their not ones where u have to kill anything so Save before doing it. I managed to get there by lv 4. As long as you don't pass LV5 into 6 u should be fine.

Played rogue, got to Skyhold level 4 and achievement won't unlock! not only that I also did Travel Light achievement and it also won't unlock...

Talk about rage quit! is any way to unbug this without replaying entire IHW again, as I would rather not.

Sounds like you weren't connected to Origin at the time (could have been for any number of reasons other than Origin). Make sure your ports are open for the game, etc, and make sure you are logged into EA servers before playing if you want achievements to trigger.

Just got Trial of the Fool the other day, couple tips:

  • The basics that other people have mentioned: focus on requisitions and recruiting agents, don't read codices, don't complete quests unless their power-to-XP ratio is good, and do not kill a single enemy that you don't have to.
  • It's easier to avoid killing enemies if you can stealth. If you are a rogue, archers will have it the easiest because their new Leaping Shot upgrade gives them permastealth without dealing damage to an enemy. Fire Leaping Shot away from any enemies or creatures, then stealth around for as long as you want. You'll need to respec to get it, but it's 3 points to get to the upgrade, so all races can afford it by the time they hit level 2.
  • Be careful looting! Research items grant XP, so check before you loot all. Also make sure you're not accidentally grabbing a quest item you don't want.
  • Claiming camps does not grant XP, so it's a good way to grab up some free power.
  • You can get the achievement even if you recruit all the companions... I'm trying to get all the Trials achievements in one go, and it didn't push me over. The power helped a lot, too.
  • But avoid companion approval quests (elven artifacts, red lyrium, Grey Warden artifacts, etc) at all costs, because those net a windfall of XP that you don't want.
  • Bears are your friends. The bandits and bears in Hafter's Wood will maul each other and drop tons of XP-free loot and materials. Making weapons with nice t2 leather and cloth will help you overcome your level gap.
  • Fennecs, mabari, and wolves are your enemies. Stay as far away from them as possible if you need to maintain stealth.
  • I was able to get enough power even though I unlocked a lot of maps. I even unlocked the Forbidden Oasis map, which grants XP in addition to requiring power. Keep in mind, though, that no map has as many camps as it costs power to unlock. So you're banking on the map having good requisitions, or materials for other maps' requisitions.
  • Forbidden Oasis turned out to be a fairly good tradeoff for the XP and power setback. It had easy requisitions and I even progressed a tiny bit of the shards quest (the entry door, and one room of The Spirit Calmed). The shards quest has a decent power/XP ratio, and it grants a ton of money. And the best part is, picking up shards doesn't grant XP, only using them on a door. The Oasis is also one of the few places where it's possible to complete the landmarks quest pre-Skyhold without combat, and that's another XP-free power.
  • Worth mentioning, the Oasis also has easy access to t2 metal and some rare herbs, so you can use it to power up your weapons and grenades if you need help overcoming the level gap.
  • If you're combining this trial with Walk Softly, you will need to be very, very careful about enemy aggro and the order you take out enemies. If the apostate in the crossroads realizes that you exist, he'll barrier up to a point that makes him nearly impossible to kill, especially at such a low level. If you're playing an archer, I recommend stealth climbing up to the roof of one of the huts, then sniping him from above. In general, if Walk Softly is on, it's critical that you eliminate mages as quickly as possible, or they'll lay down so many barriers you'll be fighting until the heat death of the universe. Or bring someone with Dispel... but I was doing a solo run, so I didn't have that.
  • Another Walk Softly tip: if you're doing In Hushed Whispers, you'll need to close the rift in front of Redcliffe. There are two parallel stone walls near that rift. To avoid getting basically one-shotted by high-level promoted teleporting shades, you'll want to stand on top of the wall. Ground teleportation fails if the destination is obstructed by a wall or other heavy structure. Be warned, however, that the pews in the Chantry fight do not offer the same protection.
  • Killing enemies in In Your Heart Shall Burn is ok, just skip past what you can. I was solo and had Rub Some Dirt On It active, so I couldn't chug my way through the trebuchet. I killed all the enemies that I spawned while turning the wheel, killed Denam, and mopped up the stragglers, and it was fine. These guys drop a lot of research materials, so again, be careful looting.
  • Expected levels:
    • I was level 2 after Wrath of Heaven
    • I was level 3 on entering In Hushed Whispers
    • I ended In Hushed Whispers at the very beginning of level 4

Did you have Travel Light activated before you spoke to Fiona in Val Royeaux? I didn't. But I had Take it Slow from start of game and its still not unlocking!

I'm having this same issue but on pc. I was quite laid back about getting the achievement and can't not read codex entries and rescue people because i've got ocd. I still managed to start and finish In Your Heart Shall Burn at lvl 5 but it's not unlocking. Don't know whether it's because I only just did it or if it's due to a bug. It's beyond frustrating.

edit: I repaired my game and travelled to another area and it unlocked, bizarre. At least the achievement can be obtained even when you are laid back about it as long as you have take it slow on from the beginning.
