I feel like people exaggerate a lot. I just did this and I kept worrying that I would get too much EXP since I did a lot of killing that wasn't nessecary. I wasn't even close to Level 6 in the end (since you got whole of Level 5 as well). Finishing the last main quest before Skyhold didn't even give any experience other than the kills. I started the quest close to level 5 and just tipped over before the end. I also saved every villager because I felt like it was my duty to protect them :P

If you do it like me all you need to do once you get to Hinterland is to grab all camps (this includes killing the bandits towards dragon camp and I completed the quest too) Did all 3 starter requisition (equipment, first one in hinterland and mother giselle one) I also closed two rifts between the crossroads and Redcliffe Village. The only real things I skipped during the missions was the one rift in the courtyard in Redcliffe Castle, the last enemies after saving all villager in Haven and all groups of enemies after you exit the Chantry in Haven to run to last Trebuchet. And of course all codexes.

Here's my plan based on lessons learn from Final Fantasy games about going into areas weak and ill equipped...

I close rifts, do the hunt, love awaits, the elements, the Dalish ring, find camps  and fight as much as I can. Leveling up.

Mages not less then 6..Equal grounds means  wining battles.

Level 7 Your heart  quest.

Levels 7-12 various area quests, close rifts, find camps and more combat.

Level 12 Wicked heart quest.

I have  my crew equipped with the best armor and weapons for each level.

I also find my strongest battle group and stay with that group.
